I've noticed that dissonance is a trademark for Diana. It's something she uses on just about everything. Yes, she also has the yodels, incredible agility in her lower register, eastern runs, and the crazy harmonics where she controls formant structure and overtones. But the one thing I'm noticing no matter what song she is singing, there is always a use of dissonance. Sometimes it's the vocals where she bends a note into microtones and back again to resolve (she did this in Rechenka). In this song you had the minor key change, harmonic minor scale, and her use of harmonics to create all that tension and dissonance.

@@alexeyt6548 Well some of the best duets ever are from people with different repertoires. Let's just start with Dimash and Lara Fabian. They are amazing together and yet completely different repertoire and very different keys. Did it work. Oh hell yeah. You could could go through the years and decades about this and find some of the most incredible duets where singers on paper might seem mismatched but in reality sound beautiful together. As far as amusing the audience well that is sort of what singers do. They amuse us,they move us,they make us cry, they make us gasp in awe at some of the notes they can hit. That is what a singer can do. But imagine what a duet can do. This is why music is so powerful. Just listen to Peter Cetera and Cher sing After All and you'll understand what I am saying.

A great thing about this show is that it is not really a competition! All nine artists perform each week and show what they can do with interesting musical challenges (they don't choose the songs). They assign one another points, but they don't really matter: no one is kicked off, and there is no prize that is being won or lost. But of course Diana Ankudinova will win! Pronouncing her name: You get pretty close with: Dee-ana Anku-DEEnova. (The Russian "o" is pronounced kind of like the English "awe", but in this name it is not stressed; an American unstressed "o" is not too different from a Russian unstressed "o")

Russian talent show. The judge who stood up was that weeks special guest judge. A world famous Russian Opera Singer. He kept going on about hearing singing all over the world and Diana has a god given gift. Everyone else are competitors on the show. 9 total competitors, so each week they have to give another performer a 9, another one an 8 and so on down to 2. I am sure the blond with braids was wondering how you can compete with that. Given the right material every performance of Diana's would be 72 (8 competitors times 9 top scores from each of them).

The guest star of this episode gave 1 point to everyone equally = 72 total. Loved your reaction. At 18, she is still early in her development as a singer, but I think she is already a polyphonic contralto with an amazing range {rare}. As she matures, I hope she will transition into a full dramatic contralto {very rare}. The judge on the top with the beard and tears in his eyes is Yusif Eyvazov who is married to Anna Netrebko, both well-known and respected opera singers. What does it say about her performance if she could bring him to tears?
