This performance was during the inaugural season of a new Russian vocal competition called "TheShowMaskGoOn" that premiered on September 25, 2021. Diana Ankudinova was 18 years old when this performance took place. Diana turned 21 on May 31, 2024. For the ShowMaskGoOn competition, Diana was the last of 9 singers to perform during this first week with her cover of the Elvis Presley's classic, Can't Help Falling In Love. One of the most commonly asked questions regarding Diana’s unique voice is, how does she do it? How does such a young female singer achieve such a low, rich, deep, profound, and resonant sound? Without actually scoping her vocal tract while she is producing her low notes to physically see what is happening within her vocal tract, the general conciseness of many vocal professionals is simply attributing Diana's ability to her winning the genetic lottery, meaning Diana was just born with unique vocal anatomy. Diana's vocal folds (vocal cords) appear to be longer and thicker than the vast majority of female singers. Her larynx, (voice box), likewise appears to be larger and similarly her pharynx, (throat), also appears to be longer and wider than the vast majority of female singers, plus she has a large oral cavity (mouth). It’s this combination of unique vocal anatomical structure that appears to give Diana Ankudinova the ability to produce the low, deep, rich, and full sounds she is known for, but without actually scoping her vocal track to verify, there is no way to be 100% sure. For this new the “ShowMaskGoOn!” competition, Diana’s cover of Elvis Presley’s classic, “Can't Help Falling In Love” showed what many vocal professionals have been saying since Diana was 14, competed and won the “You Are Super” vocal competition, in 2018 and based on Diana’s win of the 2019 “You Are Super vocal competition and concerts, she has developed into what many believed she always was, a true contralto voice type. Just to be clear, there are 3 recognized Contralto voice types: a) Coloratura Contralto: The coloratura contralto contralto has a light, agile voice ranging very high for the classification and atypically maintains extensive coloratura and high sustaining notes, specializing in florid passages and leaps. b) Lyric Contralto: The lyric contralto voice is lighter than a dramatic contralto but not capable of the ornamentation and leaps of a coloratura contralto. This class of contralto, lighter in timbre than the others, and c) Dramatic Contralto: The dramatic contralto is the deepest, darkest, and heaviest contralto voice, usually having a heavier tone and more power than the others. Singers in this classification are very rare. In past interviews Diana has said she was unhappy with her lack of a higher vocal range, and that lack kept her out of the more prestigious Russian vocal academies. Diana, along with her voice teacher decided to concentrate extensively on improving and developing her upper vocal range. A female singers vocal range helps to determine and define her voice type. In 2017 when she was 13 years old, Diana’s vocal range was first measured from a low of D3 (lower alto range) to a high of A5 (upper alto range), which was low for a 13 year old girl. Four years later during Diana's’ “Can’t Help Falling In Love” performance, her vocal range was again measured, and Diana’s functional vocal range now goes from a low of C3 (male Tenor range) to a high of B♭5, (female Mezzo Soprano range). During the opening of “Can’t Help Falling In Love”, Diana’s low Contralto voice is on full display. The improvement to her upper range is also on display during the middle portion of this performance. Finally, the depth and power of Diana’s voice during the final section define her as not just as a Contralto, but as a “Dramatic Contralto” voice type, and a Dramatic Contralto has the lowest, deepest, darkest, richest sound and it is the most powerful of the contralto voice types and is the rarest of the very rare Contralto voice types. At the end of this performance, the full power of her Dramatic Contralto voice is on full display for everyone to hear. But it’s not just how low or high she can go. It’s in the exceptional quality of her tone in both her upper and lower range, and especially in her lower range that makes her so very special. It's in the roundness, fullness, and depth of her sound, along with her ability to access, and use an enormous amount of resonance. Some people mistakenly believe Diana Ankudinova is using some form of artificial voice manipulation like Auto Tune, or she is using pitch correction software to alter or adjust her sound. Others believe another person is singing off stage in the background. Diana has been accused of lip-syncing over a previously recorded vocal track that was altered or modified. There is NO artificial manipulation of Diana's voice, and no one else is singing off stage, nor is she lip-syncing to a vocal track. What you hear in the background is a backing track for the musical score. A choir also on a backing tracks and used to fill in and round out the performance. Diana Ankudinova, and only Diana Ankudinova is actually singing “Can't Help Falling In Love”. ShowMaskGoOn was a competition among 9 professional singers. During its first weekly episodes starting on September 25, 2021. Each of the 9 singer's songs were to be from a different specified song classification, except for one song which was the choice of the performer. Each episode also had a guest judge who could vote and comment on the participants performances, but the guest judge did not perform a song. This nine week competition was televised with the finale scheduled for November 20, 2021. At the end of each episode, the participants and the guest judge had to rate the other participants on a scale of from 2 to 9 points. Participants could not vote on themselves. During Diana’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love” performance, the judge on the top row who was the first to stand is the well known Russian opera tenor, Yusif Eyvazov from Azerbaijan. He was invited to participate as a special guest judge for this inaugural competition. At the end of Diana's performance she receives a standing ovation from all her fellow competitors. One of those competitors is also a well-known contemporary Russian singer, Julia Parshuta. Julia is in the center row dressed in red, and looks totally lost at the end of Diana's performance. She puts both hands on top of her head, looking totally shocked, lost and bewildered. Finally, the competition concluded on November 20, 2021, at the end of the final episode, Diana Ankudinova was declared the winner. Diana had accumulated 468 points, which was 25 points above the second-place finisher.

We can't tell if there is a manipulation on this particular performance because these shows are recorded and then undergo several video and audio edits before aired on TV. I can't say anything about voice filtering or manipulation but I can definitely say these 3 things: 1) This is pitch corrected before aired. (We can't tell if it is autotuned live during the live performance because we don't have that audio) 2) There are backing tracks in this performance. 3) Diana's performance is still amazing. All music show producers in the world has the same or even better hardware and software but we haven't seen any performance like this on any music show in any country. The verdict is, Diana is the most unique singer in the world. Yes, her range is crazy for a contralto but it's the tonal quality that gets me. Unbelievably dark, rich and utterly unique. An operatic bass singer reacted to her and stated confidently "Her timbre is darker than mine." Also, I read somewhere that they analyzed the sound on that crushing finale on and picked up as many as 6 overtones. She just has an unreal amount of resonance. One vocal coach said: "It's like she's got a built-in sub-woofer." One in a billion physiological gift from God. Diana's voice (shockingly unique), is just the tip of the iceberg though. I’ve never seen another performer that crushes virtually every mode of expression like she does. The stage presence, the range, the emotive ability, the tiny perfectly rhythmic swaying body movements, the witchy vocalizations, the overall shamanistic earth mother vibe, the haunting overtones, and that cavernous, velvety contralto. I think she is and old, old soul. What I like most about Diana is how she overcame a rather tough start to life. Her mother physically abused and abandoned her in the street, in the middle of winter, at the age of 3. She ended up in an orphanage where she suffered PTSD (eventually a nervous breakdown) and had severe speech problems. Her adoptive mother started Diana on singing lessons as one method of hopefully improving her verbal abilities. Despite all that, she is now, by all accounts, a remarkably intelligent, poised, and humble young lady. To me, she is bravery, perseverance, and soul power personified. I get emotional just watching her, knowing how far she has come, never mind the otherworldly voice. By far, my favorite singer in the world. And yeah, it’s that thunderous, rich, dark, resonant contralto that stands out for me. She’s a witch, enchantress, siren, sorceress... they all apply. I wish her all the best in this world. The gentleman who stood up is Azerbaijani opera singer Yusif Eyvanov, married to Russian uber-soprano Anna Netrebko, so he’s heard good singing. Both he and other members of the jury remarked at the amount of energy Diana was pushing out into the space. Yusif said he’s never felt anything like it in his life. That’s part of why they looked so shell-shocked, they can’t believe what her singing is MAKING THEM FEEL.

It really isnt hyperbole that you will not find that kind of voice in one in a billion people. Its not just the amazing contralto and 4 octave range. The polyphonic overtones just add this resonance and natural autotune that pulse through you. She has incredible technique and natural stage presence as well. I am so grateful she could triumph over such a terrible start to life and found such a loving family.

Wonderful reaction! This performance was from a Russian show that aired in the fall of 2021, and ran for 9 weeks. Diana was 18 at this time. There were 9 singers who were also the judges and critiqued each other. There were 9 genres of music they had to perform over the course of the show. Thus Diana sang in many different styles. Diana is 15 years old in the following video, singing a cover of Chris Isaak's Wicked Game, giving it a more "tribal" sound. She's a contralto, even at the age of 15, has a unique and otherworldly voice, and a commanding stage presence. She is performing on the Russian TV show You Are Super, a show for disadvantaged children to display their talents that they otherwise would not be able to. Diana (dee-ah-na) was abandoned by her abusive mother at the age 3 and placed in an orphanage, diagnosed with cognitive impairment. Her adoptive mother had her enroll in singing lessons to help with some speech problems due to abuse and neglect. I do not have to add anything else, there are many nice posts that sum up her super powers. I will only correct that her voice is not one in a billion but totally unique, if you want to hear this voice you can only return to Diana, thete is no one else that can come even remotely close. Fortunately she has so many performances you can watch and in almost all genre of music there is, she piled more masterpieces in her now 21 years being alive that other way more "famous" people did not achieve in their whole lives. Of course people would want to see your reaction to the second part of her participation on this show, and not only that. He is an internationally esteemed opera singer and he is married to Anna Netrebko, who is one of the greatest operatic sopranos. The contest took place over nine rounds. This was the first of Diana's nine performances, and like this one, the other eight are all amazing. She won the contest.

Welcome to the world of Diana Ankudinova, "The Queen of Goosebumps". :) Like a strong coffee not for everyone, but some of us have physical reaction listening her singing, admiring her. Funny thing in this show when others perform Diana sits with them, 9 singers sing and vote each other's performance in 9 styles during 9 episodes, so 8 watches (+1 guest star each episode), one sings. And they cannot give max score to everyone, they must say who was 1st for them in their list in that episode, who second, etc. Which gave is a spice who you put in last each time. I liked this show, charming singers, and the amazing Diana. They really got united by the 9th week, enduring the over 45 degree celsius (the studio was super hot). Lot of fun, laughing. (WeIt Media has the full 2h shows on it's YT channel if anyone intrested). Liked your genuine reaction, subbed. I’ve been a fan of DIANA’s since she was 16’ years old…she can turn it on and switch her polyphonic contralto tone. She explained in an interview that her lower tones are easier for her but during puberty she had to work really hard to maintain the higher notes. Yes, DIANA can sing OPERA but she doesn’t like to sing it. Her highest note is straight pure tone but beautiful. Please. React to her live performances in MOSCOW’s HANS ZIMMER TRIBUTE.
