Pretty voices are a dime a dozen. Miss Ross didn't màke it in the industry on a pretty voice alone: she had "Ace" in the hole.

Her voice has character and her phrasing is dynamite. She has a doo-wop phrasing style that, when matched with her impeccable enunciation, is simply sublime. Martha Reeves had a churchy quality to her voice, Florence Ballard had a bluesy quality to her voice, and Mary Wilson also had a doo-wop style of singing that had a sultriness to it as opposed to the whiny quality that Diana Ross had (not to mention, the way she pronounced words).

I love her soul music especially, because she doesn't have to scream, yell, and holler to be affective like her counterparts. Yet, her control, pitch, tonality, and emotiveness are spellbinding, while her versatility is unmatched, as she can add the right amount of soul without changing the material and making it out of a gospel song when it's not.

Another biased s comment comparing Beyonce to a legend. Typical. On every damn old school female video. Beyonce is a better vocalist technicallly and a better performer.
@classanddignity
@classanddignity 8 жыл бұрын
+Keith Sheared I am aware of Beyonce’s range, but generally speaking, Diana sings higher than Beyonce. Diana has a better pitch, more emotions without having to grunt, growl or having to do any vocal acrobats, and can interpret a contemporary love ballad in a manner Beyonce cannot compete with. Thus, she is in a different CLASS altogether. This is because Diana has a keen artistic interpretative ability to sing a song and capture the essence of the song to make it a CLASSIC. Thus, Diana may not be the loudest singer or overdone with the vocal acrobats, but she can follow and interpret a lyric to make her own inimitable sound and define herself as an artist to make CLASSICS. Beyonce has not reached that level of artistry yet. That’s why all she can really SING AND CHART is booty-shaking material. Moreover, you all confuse lightness of voice with weak. That’s just her voice type. Beyonce, has a nice pitch as she has modeled herself after Diana in that way and a nice voice, but she is not REFINED nor DEFINED enough where she can touch classic pieces and make them hits and timeless pieces.
@classanddignity
@classanddignity 8 жыл бұрын
+Keith Sheared Better Performer?! If you mean by shakin’ your butt and gyrating in a vulgar manner while half naked, than Beyonce would qualify. Yet, if you are talking about dancing in a classic, culturally artistic, and naturally elegant manner, than Ross would only qualify. You need to look her 60’s live performances and look at her dancing in the Wiz. In terms of acting, Beyonce need not be mentioned. In terms of charisma, Beyonce is not to be discussed. In terms of presence and speaking voice, Diana owns her space and has one of the best speaking voices ever. Thus, when the two Tenors perform with any female, they tend to choose Ross overwhelmingly due to voice, versatility, looks, class, style, and artistry. Therefore, when you say better performer, it all depends on the audience. Diana has done what Beyonce and every other black female artist has done, but can they do what she has done. They are not VERSATILE.

she is so brilliant at what she does. ..that voice is so nice and unique. i believe Alicia Keys said it best "Diana Ross voice has a lot of presence". which means her voice will demand your ear, depending on how you're feeling that time of day. She is an artist, she didn't need runs, major tricks and trills. She does certain tricks with her voice though, if you listen and pay attention. ..she'll sneak in a nice vocal trick for you every now and then. And its beautiful. ..what a colorful voice. Diana Ross is the Boss.
@classanddignity

+JustRudo She can and does follow music very well. Many times other singers do unnecessary tricks because they can't follow the music as it is written. They do not have the control you would think they have. Thus, they over compensate for a lack of control in their lower resonance and overall vocal control to sing it properly.

“Ross had no true contemporary’s, for 20-30 years only artists Elvis and the Beatles had accumulated more #1 hits than Diana Ross had. Young Miss Ross opened doors not only for the ones that came after her, but also for the ones that came right along with her; hence a lot of the unfair resentment and false witness .Not until the mid-1980’s and the arrival of artists like Madonna, Whitney, Mariah , Janet and later Beyoncé , who I personally also call the biggest star of her own generation … Ms. Ross has always been the one to try and beat, She set the standard high; as far popularity, image, notoriety and #1 pop recordings . Diana is a very great vocal stylist who is great at what she does! Moreover, coming up in an era where you had to have talent … Diana Ross is arguably the biggest and brightest star of her generation!” ~ Bryan O’Quinn

You summed it up quite well my friend. Diana ruled her generation and was in a class by herself among White and Black female Artists. While she is not enjoying the commercial success that she did in the past, due to the Dynamics of how music is valued and marketed in this day and time, she stills command a great Audience and still has Global Iconic appeal, and respect is still given and shown to her in England, Japan, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Italy, and other parts of the world with acknowledging her profound impact on music. Also, When it comes to her performing live, wherever she performs, she is still being showered with sellout venues and being honored with awards as well. I also believe and know that the American Music Industry understands her true influence and profound stamp on the music industry, and how she really is the #1 Female Artist that has really impacted the most in various genres of music like no other female artist of her time, but never wants to give her that notoriety because of how America still views stereotypes of Black and White Entertainers. They would prefer someone white to be considered for that crown. Also, she face criticism because she doesn't sound soulful and churchy enough in what they usually see and get from a Black Female Artist. Nevertheless, what celebratory Accomplishment and Longevity that she represents from 1964 to present. Ross still reigns Supreme!

ON THE NAIL! That is what other R and B AND Black singers are missing...that ability to control their voice to sing it precisely as it was written with the style of the music, WITHOUT making it out of a gospel/R and B version. She can add the right amount of soul to sing different types of music. She is versatile with a pitch perfect voice and that special tone. She is not the loudest singer and has a strong voice, but her voice type carries differently. Yet, those other singers don't sound better than she.

She has one of the most beautiful pitch perfect voices I ever heard, loud or soft. Like it or not, Diana in her prime can sing what these other Black/R&B singers can sing. Yet, they CANNOT sing what she can sing ever (traditional/contemporary love songs, show tunes, country/western, classic pop, etc.) Really she does not compete with them like people keep comparing her to, for she is more versatile. She can sing what is & has been typically slated for a white woman, but add enough soul to it to make it crossover worldwide to distinguish her. That’s why even white woman in her era could not outsell/outdo this woman, including Barbara Streisand, Bette Middler, etc. Thus, those Black singers were not competition for her. Therefore, she was undervalued because she wasn’t black enough for many & many whites felt like whom does she think she is as to encroach on what they consider exclusively theirs. Accordingly, she offends a lot of people, MOSTLY IN AMERICA, because she has the best of both worlds. Had she’d been a white woman, she would have never been denied.
@Kevin-rg3yc

Many of the black female singers in her prime like Aretha franklin was able to do the same diverse genres as Diana and she was more an innoviative vocalist as she created variety of vocal styles, the same goes to Barbra Streisand
@classanddignity
@classanddignity 5 жыл бұрын
@@Kevin-rg3yc History does not support what you stated. Aretha may perform different songs from different types of music; however, always interprets them from that GOSPEL perspective. Accordingly, it charts that way. That’s why Berry favored Diana over Flo and Mary, because he liked Doris Day and wanted someone who could promote a tone, clarity, and style that could sing those types of songs, but sing other types as well. That’s why the Supremes had commercial appeal. Barbara can’t sing R and B well. She may have a fine voice but doesn’t sing those down and out songs as though she lived that life. It is another great performance but can be quite clinical. That’s why no other artist has ever channeled Billie Holiday the way Diana has to sing Lady Day. Not even Aretha or Barbara! Diana can sing what other Black artists can sing, and what White woman really can’t as well as a Black woman can typically. Yet, she can sing what would be slated for a White woman, like the song “To Love Again”. Diana can take her soul to the left or right; that’s why she’s charted in every category pretty much.

@@classanddignity umm history does support me bc you would know aretha was only limited to gospel during her young years before signing with Columbia in the early/mid 1960s where she did a variety of genres such as pop standards, broadway show tunes, jazz, doo wop, blues and R&B, that didn't have any interpretations or elements of gospel. In fact, after aretha got signed to Columbia she wouldn't any gospel music until the masterpiece album known as Amazing Grace She even did an extremely outstanding rendition of a classic opera song at the 1998 grammys which is regarded as one of greatest live performances of all time

Her voice is melody. Ms. Ross is a singer who knows how to work what she has. Not a powerhouse, but she is certainly skilled and crafted. She has range, emotion and power but she does exactly what the song calls for her to do. she sings it. Her weapons of choice? Her phrasing and her diction. She is an underrated singer like Janet Jackson, for whom Ross paved the way for because they are not gospel-bred divas. But that does not mean they cannot sing. The lady is a legend and she is the best at what she does. Whitney and Patti both said it.

I didn't know Diana Ross could sing like that! But I think everyone said she couldn't sing because she came out in a time of extreme powerhouses. She had to be up against artists like Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, etc. Artist who blew every song they sung on. So I think that's why she didn't make the category of people who could "sing"

+Mario Moore power is only one element of "good singing" tone is another and diane has one of the best.

+Mario Moore “Ross had no true contemporary’s, for 20-30 years only artists Elvis and the Beatles had accumulated more #1 hits than Diana Ross had. Young Miss Ross opened doors not only for the ones that came after her, but also for the ones that came right along with her; hence a lot of the unfair resentment and false witness .Not until the mid-1980’s and the arrival of artists like Madonna, Whitney, Mariah, Janet and later Beyoncé who I personally also call the biggest star of her own generation … Diana has always been the one to beat, She set the standard high; as far popularity, image, notoriety and #1 pop recordings. Moreover coming up in an era where you had to have talent …Diana Ross is arguably the biggest star of her generation!” ~Bryan O’Quinn

BryanOQuinnTV the reason diane stands above her contemporaries and today's lot is that she is an original. she created the mold that nearly all the other (females) followed and she did it witout, MTV, internet, massive distribution networks available now. she also did it in the midst of racism that didn't allow the acceptance of black performers. in her 1970's prime she was untouchable.

***** you're correct Diane aged out of the USA market but one thing about Diane she never was stupid enough to put all her eggs in one basket. she remained popular throughout Europe, Asia, even South America.. Diane also has a catalog of hits that have stood the test of time and remain popular enough for her to still make millions touring in the USA whether American radio will play her new material or not.

Someone commented that Ross's voice stood out because it was pretty. But pretty voices come a dime a dozen. And she didn't make it the industry on a pretty voice alone: she had an Ace in the hole.

It's so easy to under estimate Diana because she sings F5 like it's nothing, not a hint of strain or tension. I never realised she could hit those notes! Someone like Sia sounds good because she frames the high notes well, while Diana does not really build up to it. I wish a song was written for her where she could really showcase her voice, imagine her singing Titanium or Chandelier!

This is what Berry saw in her..her superstar potential..she had that voice and style to be able to crossover nationalities. If Flo would've understood that, Mary too. Everyone just blamed Diana for everything.

People think you must be able to hit 17 different notes and do 1000 runs to be a good singer sadly. Diana Ross proves this is not the case another plus was her ability to enunciate I think due to her contemporaries she got the cant sing moniker. Yous should do one of these videos for Sade.

For all women's at there, you don't have to show, or to shake your ass to be famous, because you never will, you have to own that skill, to produce super performance, if you don't own that, don't wasted your life, don't slow yourself going that low,.. PLEASE!!!!

diana ross can sing well and can reach those notes. sometimes its hard for people to realize that since her voice is soft and doesn't have that power the way whitney or Patti does.
