I have never thought of Diana as a "weak" vocalist. I've always thought of her as a very very lady-like and extremely feminine vocalist, and have always loved her for that.

All you said. Great singers, like Miss Ross, do not need tricks or to show off. Art is presenting something personal and making it universal. That's Diana Ross.

Who said anything about her being a weak singer in this video?
@erossinema8797
@erossinema8797 2 жыл бұрын
Her voice was light but strong...People thought she was weak because her voice didn't sound as guttural or strong as Whitney's . But I don't need that to think someone is a good singer and feel soul. Diana used her facial bones, instead of getting all of her tone from her lungs. She must have done something right. It made her the number one singer in terms of concert and record sales. More records than Aretha, Tina, Patti, Natalie, Petula, Shirley, Melba, Dionne, Barbra , etc..

She has a PHd in stage presence. It's amazing watching old clips of her with the Supremes and you can't take your eyes of her. No tricks, no auto-tune, just wonderful talent and aura. In the 1970s she just got more gorgeous, as the anorexia disappeared and she just looked absolutely stunning like a top model.

I totally agree. I just wished she'd recorded more songs that challenged her vocally.However she and Streisand are masters of two types of singing. No one sings emotional conflict in a song better than Streisand and no one sings of pure love better than Ross.

I remember back in the day, they would say that Diana could not sing...and that she was better as a background singer. They made comments about how she sounded nasally and congested. But Berry said she could sing, she may not be the best singer, but she had two other things that made her an entertainer, DRIVE and PERSONA...and that is what has gotten her where she is today. Diana's connection to a song shows in her performance...when she's invested in a ballad, she will shed a tear because the song touched her emotionally and the audience feels that in her delivery. Diana loves to perform, she loves her audience and she takes them all in when she is performing. That is a consummate performer....which is why she still performing to sold out venues.

The first time I ever saw Diana Ross (with The Supremes) was in 1964 in Brooklyn. They were a part of the Murray the K Review at the Brooklyn Fox Theater. My friends and I collected soda bottles for the refunds to pay for our tickets (two dollars a piece). I was 12. It was my first concert and I fell in love. I was one of those people in Central Park (my sneakers are still a bit damp) and saw one of the greatest performances ever. When she had her assistant bring her the shawl and the wind came up, all I could say was, "Damn, she even uses Mother Nature as her stage prop." What impressed me the most, besides her rendition of "God Bless The Child" was the fact that a lot of families, who, ordinarily would not have had the financial opportunity to see a show, actually participated in NYC history. I still have my 92 KTU button. In 1993, I had to have my first open heart surgery. Ironically, it was the same night that Diana Ross performed her "Lady Sings the Blues" concert in NYC...but I made sure someone taped it for me. Can you think of a better way to recuperate from surgery? I'm 67 now and I'm still a fan. I enjoyed your film presentation. You can say whatever you want to describe her voice or her performance but the best descriptive is Miss Ross, The Boss. Just saying "Diana" tells the story. Yup, her music and performances have given me some of the best years of my life. Thanks. You made a lot of people smile with this.

3-9-19: There are no words in the World Dictionary to describe Diana Ross’ multitude of talent. I like many others use to feel her voice was never as good as Florence Ballard because we didn’t understand the lightness and cotton candy softness of her voice. God made Diana Ross to serenade in her very special unique range. As I watched this video it struck me that for all the years and talent of Michael Jackson- the years he spent under the facial resculpturing, he was trying to facially look like his idol - Diana Ross! And his facial features did transition very closely to Diana’s. 😘❤️🌈. One more thing: A direct appeal to Diana- Your old friends are like GOLD- Mary Wilson and you go back to the cradle- NOW ITS TIME FOR THE TWO DIVAS TO TAKE THEIR DYNAMIC SINGING TO LAS VEGAS⭐️JUST THE TWO OF YOU❤️ROSS AND WILSON YESTERDAY🌈TODAY⭐️ FOREVER🌈

The clip from Miss Ross singing "My Man" at Caesars in Vegas with stellar vocal control and rang and then with that one tear sliding down her cheek...pure magic. What a gift from God. And she mentions how blessed she is many times on stage. She genuinely appreciates it. And btw one thing about Miss Ross is that she makes no bones about growing up in the projects in Detroit. A lot of people in her shoes would try to hide that. She embraces it and will readily talk about it. That is pure class. Hats off to an amazing lady.

Diana Ross is the single MOST UNDERRATED FEMALE VOCALIST in the history of popular music, and it is mostly because of petty personal false perceptions too many people still harbor about her. It has very little to do with her actual talents as a pro-singer. She's a world renowned mega-star and music/film legend for very deserved reasons. Thankfully, she just proves her silly critics wrong again and again. Thank you Miss Ross. Millions of us still love and appreciate you, and always will.

You just stated exactly why i have always loved Diana Ross. She has so much soul yet she never oversings nor does her voice get all gravely or overly gospel . I believe that is what set her apart from all the rest. That is what made/makes her special.

3FromTheOutside Underrated? Are u fucking serious? She was only second to The Beatles in the 1960s. She was on tv singing every week. The woman was as famous and famous can be.

I think folks, including some lifetime fans like me, forget just how much Ross loves singing. It's been her life-force even before the Supremes, then the Primettes, first sang as a group at 14-15 years old. My all time favorite live vocal performance during Classic Diana era is "My Man" at Ceasar's Palace. I always get chills no matter how many times I've watched it. My all time favorite post 80's live vocals is "God Bless America" at Bill Clinton's Inauguration. At all the Ross concerts I've been to over the years her voice has always sounded like velvet. But it's that light, that pure joy of singing, that has been consistent since the early days. You can see and feel it in her eyes and her spirit. It's not a light I see in a lot of singers, let alone a legend, a Guiness Book of World Records honoree, with 18+ US and international number 1 songs and dozens of top 40 singles, who has nothing left to prove.

Magic moments indeed. There's only one Ms Ross. Great video that shows this girl has got a great set of lungs on her. I'm so glad I've shared my years here on this planet as Diana.....and long may she keep entertaining us. Generations until the end of time will have a whole lot of catching up to do when they first hear an old record from a simply stunning songbird from thousands of years ago on that old radio thing....

The only woman who ever captured MJs heart from the 1st time he saw her to the day he died. Now if she could do that...that is a force to be reckoned with!❤I remember the Central Park performance when she kilt it in the rain with that jumpsuit on. The next week that jumpsuit was on sale everywhere and i bought a royal blue one! Teehee. She was also the 1st black superstar to wear a weave especially that much hair. Go head Ms Ross the Boss. Incomparable to this day!

That's when she first became known as "The Boss". ( Not just Bruce Springsteen). Oh, yeah! That red jumpsuit. It caught my attention. I was a teenager, watching that televised HBO concert. That was when she began to fill out, past the age of 30, After years Baby finally had "Back". Hips, and junk in the trunk.

Thanks so much for taking the time to compile this! Many great clips I hadn't seen! I don't usually think in terms of "oh, so-and-so is a better singer than Diana Ross," or "Whitney blows her away" or stuff like that. If it were only about lung power alone, Flo would have been the lead singer of the Supremes. Diana has a beautiful timbre that's just perfect for pop material but this was a nice reminder that she can belt it out pretty nicely too! THANKS!

Diana also is thin and her features weren't as pronounced (thin lips and nose). This appeals to a bigger demographic a whiter demographic. Same with Whitney and same with Beyonce. That's part of it but nobody doesn't seem to want to talk about that.
