On this video I shall explore the Roman goddess Diana as she was understood to be the goddess of the pagans in the Middle Ages and early Modern Period. I wil mainly focus on the document Canon Episcopi, as well as the shaping of the figure of the witch, and how a Church's reinterpertation of Diana whould change the entire religious mindset of neo-pagan religious manifestations based on the figure of the Great Mother Goddess.

Interestingly, in Italy where my mother is from, at Christmas it is the Befana who is the old lady or old witch that leaves gifts. It is my understanding that during the times of the witch trials in America, that most towns still used midwives. The up and coming new all male doctors that came to set up shop in these towns were met with suspicion or skepticism and could not thrive because of the town trust in the midwives. In order for the all male new doctors to get their toes in the door started rumors of the midwives being witches and grew from there. Love and health to you my love!

Yep, exactly, the complete takeover of professional medicine was a big aspect of the Witch Trials throughout Europe. The few that actually happened in North America ie Salem and are very famous because of that utterly pale in comparison to the horror that was visited upon the women of Europe, and what you mention is a big part of that.

I've also been looking forward to this topic. Thank you for this, it expands my view on a Goddess I've researched alot. Lingering thoughts from this video: religions seem constructs of wealthy city people and reliant on social interaction , community ideals about order and profit. Paganism promotes a personal relationship with god and does not have reliance on the community and rules. Seems Diana is the wild itself...without rules, in need of no walls or churches. Our world is so populated and the wild places are disappearing....when did it come to be , we relied on others so much for spiritual validation? Please, let me be in the country , in nature, away from the religious-political nightmare someday! Thanks for this again...its given me insights.

It feels a little odd to me to bring up witch trials in relation to the topic at hand, without at least mentioning the crucial role The Hammer of Witches and the invention of the printing press had in those coming into existence. It is pretty far from the main topic here... but the reason I bring it up actually isn't. I wouldn't expect you to be familiar with it, as it's kind of fundamentally heretical against whatever we describe as "Western Culture" itself, and hence didn't have the impact it ought to have (in my view anyway): The Alphabet vs the Goddess, by Leonard Schlain. One of the big reasons I hold the book in such high regard is how prophetic it was about what's been going on recently culturally as a direct result of the existence of Social Media, ie a new form of (primarily written and read) communication, with similar capacity for spreading misinformation, and 'human ideas' in general, much farther and faster than any previous forms of communication. He basically goes through history starting in ancient times, and (among many, many other fascinating patterns) he shows that whenever a new form of communication is introduced (the one exception being television, oddly enough, because it is such a visual medium and therefore engages the 'right brain' as much or more than the 'left brain'... I know those probably feel like almost outdated or passe concepts about human consciousness; reading this book is what convinced me otherwise), humanity goes through a period of 'madness', as various absolutist, black and white, "reason based" (which in reality just means that it appears on the surface to 'make sense' even if deeper reflection would show the many contradictions present, in other words slogans, propaganda statements, memes, the 'ideas' that form qanon, etc.) 'ideas' are spread at an unprecedentedly rapid pace among a populations of humans, the majority of whom, quite frankly, are not mentally equipped with enough critical thinking to handle them. This book was written in the 90's, long before there was any hint of Social Media in its current form existing (I don't think he even mentions the internet existing, can't recall), and it completely predicted exactly the phenomena that we are seeing presently, which to any thinking person are otherwise quite confounding, and not at all what we expected the "freedom of the internet" to bring.

Thank you Arith, this was interesting and so good to hear. As far as I always understand: Paganism existed long before the church. I consider myself a Pagan but not in terms of casting spells, drawing sacred circles, using altar tools etc. This is very neo-pagan - which I find interesting nevertheless. But Paganism is - as I see it - a result from Animism and Shamanism. And the center of Paganism is not a goddess, but nature itself. As to me the "wheel of the year" is more "important" than chantings for a goddess. Goddesses are energy. And that energy can be found in nature and life itself. Also, I do not 'worship', I rather consider myself as part of nature and the great circle of life. All is connected. That is why I myself - and everyone - has devine energy - if to speak. I have no doubt that there are spirits, nature spirits. But also these are forms of energy. I think people have created gods and goddesses in order to give these energies a face. If people have no control over lifeforces then perhaps a higher being can have control (?) I really enjoyed that you made the role of the church clearer. We should also not forget that 'real' paganism was not hierarchical. If everything is connected then nothing is better or worse (Animism). I would love to hear more about Slavic Paganism as there is hardly anything known. As I understand this form was very nature-connected until later times. For example the "worship" of trees because of the belief that ancestors lived on in those. Perhaps you could make a video about that one day. :))

thank you Arith my dear friend for this extra video for the season of the witch :) I think that in these times that you refer to , most country dwellers in the british isles would have worshiped celtic or anglo saxon gods if any, but my belief is that mostly they would have worshipped things like stones, trees, mountains, sun and moon ,deities of nature . It is true that Diana made a big impact of the belief system of neo pagans from the late fifties and onwards with the movements of gerald gardner and alex sanders ... In my early days in a coven (many moons ago ) I was force fed the idea of Diana and Aradia being the main deities to worship however it never sat right with me and I could not in all honesty bring myself to do this .... now i think it is time for me to eat also LOL

Wow I love that! This topic is incredibly interesting to me. I am from Europe ( Spain) but I live in India since years studying the fascinating hindu religion and ancient wisdom of India. But I see we had the same in Europe in ancient time, very similar Deities , but it was all completely erased 😢 while in India they keep it exactly as 6000 years ago, those temples are still alive as well as the magical traditions. Nothing against christianity, but its true that it did erase.so much beauty and valuable traditions which is sad. I feel a huge conection with Diana since childhood, its so strange. I just saw her in a book as a kid, and I used to light candles for her or feel there was a silver Godess of the moon. Maybe I did worship her in a past life who knows, or its somehow in my dna.

The Historia Augusta is a collection of often spurious biographies of Roman emperors that was written in the late fourth century AD (about the time of Theodosius, when the Temple of Serapis was destroyed). Hadrian is purported to have addressed a letter from Egypt to his elderly brother-in-law Servianus, who was Roman consul in AD 134 (by which time Hadrian himself was back in Rome). In Alexandria, he relates: "There those who worship Serapis are, in fact, Christians, and those who call themselves bishops of Christ are, in fact, devotees of Serapis" (The Four Tyrants, VIII.1).

I must admit, youtube's algorithm recomended your channel often since I was searching similar contents but for a long time I didn't even try to watch any of your videos cause I was like ''nuh, another european pagan he may be a fascist as well''. But after so many recomendations I decided to give your channel a try and started to watch your videos which are the best material I ever found on youtube. But I didn't liked or subscribed until I saw the ''animistic divine'' and also saw that in your instagram you don't allow neo nazis, so that took away any hesitation I had to follow your channel. I also noticed that if the first video I saw from you was with you new ''haircut'', I would have made these assumptions faster and maybe I wouldn't even see anything. I realise it is so sad that all this crap (fascism) exists in paganism and we are so cautious against each other because of that, and I would have missed all this wonderful knowledge you share. And what makes your channel special to me is that you talk about paganism in an animistic perspective (I'm an animist). I have not found any channel similar to yours with such a great quality. It's so sad that I avoided watching it for a long time, but it's true that fascism has almost become a synonym with european paganism. It's really sad and disappointing. Good to see someone make the difference and that's another reason why your channel is awsome! Keep going mr. Harger! Ecxelent job!

Hullo! Such a lovely comment, thank you very much! I'm happy you decided to take a peep and joined this community. In this channel everyone is welcomed as long as they are willing to learn and share knowledge. I really want to create in here a safe community where we can all share knowledge. I'm interested in the historical truth as much as we are able to know it (I'm an archaeologist, so I literally dig up the past, hehe). However, I do not tolerate bigotry, no racism, nor any form of oppression or violent and hate speeches. This is a place to learn and share knowledge, so everyone is welcomed as long as we can all respect each other. As I always say, why create enemies when we can make friends with polite and civilized conversations? :) I was actually afraid to shave my head (I had no other choice). I was afraid people would think I'm some sort of bloody racist or a radical traditionalist, or far-right bigot. Rest assured, I am not. Nor will I ever be. I will always keep fighting against that. Ignorance is the bane of all societies, so I'm certain that with education and aiming for the truth we can all reach a point when we start to understand one another and there will be no need for intolerence anymore. Intolerance is just an impulse created by ignorance due to the fear of what we don't know or what we don't understand. Be very welcome to this channel! Hope you enjoy the rest of the content and future videos. Cheers!

There is a way in which Leland's account makes plausible sense. The Hebrews were probably henothesits before Babylon, accepting the existence of other gods, while remaining loyal (more or less) to their deity YHWY. But during the captivity, blaming themselves for their downfall, they took a lesson from the Persians and became zealots for monotheism. All other deities were evicted, including those who were popular (eg Asherah), and so there was some spiritual resistance lead by 'Satan'. Eventually Christianity ascended and the show moved to a new seat of power... Rome. Satan and his folk follow along to resist there. Traipsing around the Roman country side, who do they meet? The Lady beyond the boundaries. Diana and Satan, both spirits of out there, both with a common enemy. It does not stretch credulity to imagine that they might hook up.

"Sky goddess - whether you are the all-nourishing Ceres, the primordial mother of fruits [...], or the heavenly Venus worshiped in the sea-flooded sanctuary of Paphos, or the sister of Phobus who is [... ] now worshiped in the glorious temple of Ephesus, or the triune [of three figures] Proserpina, who [...] is propitiated in manifold worship {...] under whatever name, according to whatever rite, in whatever form thee must be invoked, help me now in my utter misery [...]!" Apuleius Madaurensis This is a supplication of the young Lucius, who had been transformed into an donkey by curious tampering with certain practices. At the sight of the moon rising over the sea, lucius addressed these words to the entity .. :)

@@Agape122 What qualities do you associate with Diana, what do you feel? This is important. Meditate on it and then decide. I live on the Baltic Sea. There are various "genii loci" here. For example, "Die Frau vom See" (no one knows her name any more)". She has "dark" qualities (Sunday born children should not bathe in the lake. Sometimes she keeps some, people say). Some people felt great strength and uplifting joy there. Other people feel differently, uncomfortable or threatened, some nothing. At another place there is an old lime tree where people put small pieces of paper with love wishes on them. There is another aura. Both local deities would be called Diana by a "Roman", for example. And in a way, that is also true. P.S. Give your brother love and spend time with him. That helps. Are there certain places in nature in your area where Mary is worshiped? Often these are places where Diana was worshiped and Mary then carries on the attributes of the old goddess or she still is, only that her meaning has been extended by that of Mary. (My english is not perfect. I hope you understand the text like i intendet. ) :)

@@heimdalsen721 thanks a lot your answer is awsome. What is the meaning of " geni loci"?? I wish I could spend time with him, I do online but he lives in America I live in India and we can't meet at the moment, and I know he is uterly depressed and I feel frustrated to be so far away😣 Here in India there is no Holy Mary temples but there is a lot of Goddess temples. What country do you live that there is all that cool things like an old tree with love wishes and a magic lake? I am very curious now!

@@Agape122 Sorry for the late reply. I live in north-eastern Germany on the Baltic Sea. It is not uncommon in rural europe for old traditions to survive. watch arith's new video. he talks about it. Genius loci: "local spiritual entity of this specific place". I hope you are, were able to help your brother a little in his pain. I am touched that you are so compassionate. Also because I can understand how he feels ... LG Björn

Arith Greetings, my brother your research is fastinating, as well as your presentation, it's refreshing, I get tired of neo pagans using scripts to their presentation of sharing their traditions or rituals, thank you for your professional presents, my goddess is Danu, queen of heaven, mother of the universe, it's amazing how many names she is known by,as you already know, and the connection to northern Germanic folk, I love her with mind body and spirit, concidering my people are from the northern Germanic tribe's I consider myself a heathen, have you ever heard of Heilung? Check them out on Utube, this is the closest understanding of my path, and their is nothing demonic of her, folks identify with misunderstanding of Christian church's notion of truth, and free will, which in my opinion is controlling humanity, and this is why the Vatican has stolen magickal artifacts, and killed numerous tribe's throughout the free world, to take the power away from the people, to try to use for their own greedy means to obtain ultimate power, and wealth, and that'swhy the artifacts are stored in the main vault of the Vatican to this day, anyway thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. ......

The Roman cult of Isis had a vast influence on europe and she was a monotheistic Goddess of magic at that time. When Christianity began its rise to power everyone in all of europe was romanized in one way or the other. Diana had been heavily joined with isis even by roman emperors and was most likely more popular with commoners. personally i do not think it matters if its all real or partially mythology but i do think it is interesting to note that one of Christianity's major rivals in the roman empire was a cult of a monotheistic goddess. This would have been a memory or idea carried for generations. Lets face it the religion of the Druids and the ways of Odin were far out of fashion at that point. So I think we must listen a bit to how the christians needed to turn Diana (a Goddess) into a witch why not odin? The Church was afraid of the Goddess they needed a devil they needed a Mary.

That said, thank you so much for this; though I've dug myself into some spots voicing similar thoughts around Wiccan friends... Oops. :) x

Intuition is slightly different in woman and native ancestors accepted this. Teachings in origin where removed as it threaten the priests. Am very glad that this has gotten to you, soon maybe the real reasons will be known and why it was necessary.

Women's intuition is no different. And what the ancients knew there was their prejudices. Intuition is associated with experience and more. It is foolish to say otherwise. Any creature has intuition, and it is formed by our environment, ourselves. Only a narrow-minded person in such complex things makes gender segregation. Divides energy into masculine and feminine. These are all prejudices and prejudices of the past. It's time to change, because stagnation is bad. Remembering the past, any ideology, religion, should change over time, go forward. And you all argue with these templates. Their intuition is different. What is this? Normal intuition, like everyone else. Someone is more developed, someone is less developed. As I said, it depends on many factors.

Jesus The Anointed One did NOT identify with the official religion of the day and He came and preached to the poor. in spirit. The Pharisees, Sadducees then the Roman/ Catholic church and others usurped real Christianity. Only those who follow Christ EXAMPLE (in word and DEED) and NOT the traditions of men , are the true Christians.
