Virtua Fighter 5 REVO is almost here for STEAM, with rollback netcode. But this game has a reputation for being one of the hardest fighting games around. So wanted to share my experience with learning the game :)

The reason throw tech is good at all is because you can tech while blocking. The reason throw tech is bad is there are 3 different techs and you CANNOT react to the throws, you have to predict which throws the opponent might want to use because you can only tech one of the 3 directions at a time. Throw tech is a free bonus to blocking that will stop 1/3 of the throws.

Virtua Fighter isn't a reaction heavy game, reading and conditioning play a more significant role. Rock-paper-scissor system means you risk being thrown after you have unsuccessfully predicted and tried to defend against an unsafe attack, or eaten a counter that leaves you at -7 frames or more. Throws lose to attacks, are level-dependent so you can crouch under them, or can be dashed out of _and_ can be teched. It's only natural that throw teching requires some reading and guesswork on your part, or throws would be too weak to use.

There's nothing bad about it. Tekken having reaction to throws is stupid because it makes it harder to open up your opponents guard. High level players react to all throws. Which means you have to risk using lows or poke at the opponent a million times. Which causes offense to be lacking. Tekken 8 didn't fix this issue. They added heat instead. Which Is unnecessary and caused Tekken to be too offensive

@@zekiel2533 Having to react to throws means either you eat free throws, or you waste hours and hours until you become good enough to remove them from the game. So it basically only rewards low level play lol

You are certainly not alone. I've been a very casual VF fan for about 20 years, finally decided to try and sit down and actually get good at the game and thought "gee Vanessa looks kinda fun”. I wish somebody warned me about the uphill battle I'd be committing to but I'm too stubborn to quit after putting in over 50 hours learning her 😂

For anyone worried about tier lists or if you see a character you like in a low rank, there is a gap in strength but the game is actually super well balanced since everyone more or less relies on universal tools and concepts. I play E tier Pai and theres never been a moment where I've felt completely outclassed outside of her low damage. There was in an interview with Fuudo in 2009 that has been shared with every version of VF5 and I imagine REVO will be the same: Q: Do you have any problems with balance in VF5R? A: Nope. Because I was using the weakest character in VF5. Also, everyone has the same type of basic moves in VF. So more or less it is a even playing ground in my opinion. So if anyone wants to play the waifus if you want or Lei Fei if you think he's rad (he is btw), VF5 is a shockingly balanced game, I believe at CEO the tournament had an Eileen and an Aoi in top 8. The game is based more on reading what your opponent is doing than anything else. Also for anyone put off by it, don't be scared by this games difficulty. Its hard but its not the bone shattering fighting game people make it out to be imo.

That's what separates Virtua fighter from Tekken and every other 3d fighting game. Every character despite their "weaknesses" is perfectly viable and you see a lot more variety of characters in tournaments. Even though someone like Akira is on top of the tier list, you'll be lucky to even see more than one because of how heavy his execution can be to master. which point number 2 you're definitely rewarded for practicing the heavy execution moves because it leads to combos and damage that you rarely see. Tekken right now despite the nerfs is too top heavy with Dragunov, Nina, Yoshimitsu, Jin, Shaheen. It honestly gets repetitive and boring to watch (with the exception of Kuma who recently won the world tour). Too many times, rage, rage arts, healing and heat take back so many matches that should've been won by the opponent. ( I understand that for the viewer it's hype to see it, but after looking at, it becomes far too common a comeback when everyone near the end of the match is given a potential comeback card at no expense.)

also, there where balance changes to existing moves, changes to the system (weight, hurt-animations), addition of new moves AND on top of that nerfs for the abusable stuff of the top tiers... you cannot take these tier lists 1for1; they are EXTREMELY outdated with the ver. 2.0/ REVO

For all the "Lei Fei and Blaze are low tier" mentions, those two have some really nasty blenders that they can put players on. And yeah. This game may "seem" hard to learn, but it's easier than it seems in a sense that it's very straightforward. Easy to pick up, but vastly deep when you're way into it.

@@whizthesugoi A lot of the characters have really solid throw games, but there's definitely "real" grapplers in this game who have untechable throws and/or have gameplans built around getting those throws off (ie Wolf and Taka)

All characters have strong throws, but Wolf, Jeffry, Taka, Aoi, Vanessa, and Goh are SCARY with throws. You can lose matches in a flash.

While the beta has ended, it's probably the most fun I had in a long time with fighting games. Virtua fighter despite some very high execution moves, it felt also the most fair and I didn't get the sense I was being cheated by cheap moves or too many comeback mechanics.

Vanessa is so fun. I am treating her like two characters. First I'm learning defensive only, then slowly branching out to offensive over time.

Treating her like 2 characters is a good idea, but you should start with Offensive Style first. Defensive Style is weird and quirky and is more of a counter character with weak fundamentals, Offensive Style is just a fundamentally solid striker with good offensive string variation and a good catch throw for breaking down defenders. The reason why you want to learn OS first is not just to build fundamental offense but also to use the system for defense, learning to evade strikes and either take advantage of the plus frames situation or whiff punish what you evaded rather than just avoid it with a funky move for no reward.

In 2d there are more games with back to block, and in 3d there are more games with block button, but the only mainstream 3d game has back to block, so it's easy to get confused right away

I enjoy playing Aoi but yeah, she's not too great, mostly cos so many of her moves are full on counters which are hard enough to do normally, let alone on reaction. But when you do land one, it feels oh so sweet!!

Vanessa is one of the few chars I really enjoyed in VF but I knew was just bad in online circles. I played her alot, tried to learn her, but at best I performed atleast 2 ranks under what I'd be considered, so I ended up sticking with Goh. Was alot of fun playing her and I really like her design but god shes atrocious in every way possible. I dont mean it as shes a bad character, just playing her is really rough. God bless all the souls that had to play VF on Yakuza for the completionism list. VF on Yakuza was such utter BS with input reading AI lmao. I hated that part of my life.

This game originally came out in the PS3 era so a lot of the sounds effects are dated until we get 6 but the sounds arent that bad. They're meant to mimic kung fu movies etc.

Yeah it's just the 2.0 update to VF5 Ultimate Showdown. Afaik it's the same as REVO except there's no rollback. It's on PS4 and I'm pretty sure it's on PS5 as well.
