One of the best explanations I've seen on YT. This is a very tricky thing to pattern in correctly, especially if you're coming from years of dysfunctional patterns, compensations etc.... Regular Myofascial Release of the hip flexors, ribcage, lats, upper glutes, can help to calm the tissues down if people are struggling to isolate the TVA muscle.

I believe a better way is thoracic /chest breathing. Our lungs are not in the stomach. Diaphragma creates supression and at same time you expand your ribcage. This stabilize your upper body, and it frees your lower back muscles from tension for better posture as far as I understand.
@elitechiroperformance Жыл бұрын
I would disagree. When the diaphragm contracts, it creates a vacuum to help pull air into the lungs. The "chest breathing" muscles are accessory muscles and are meant to assist the diaphragm by pulling on the rib cage. They are more prominent with deep breathing and higher exertional breathing like when exercising.
@heiv3368 Жыл бұрын
@@elitechiroperformance This is an interesting topic. Well, it just seems to me that hardcore belly-breathers in the longer run have more things like lower back pain, flare ribs, beer-stomach, and develop a bad pelvic position. When I mean thoracic breathing I do not mean involving shoulders and neck by any means. When I practice thoracic breathing, my stomach rises a bit, but it's passively. However, if breathing with your stomach feels better, I think people should just stick for what seems best for them. For myself I feel a lot better doing thoracic.

Loosen or remove the leather belt? I think it's nice that when you breath this way, you can easily control the speed of your breaths, by simply moving the abdominal muscles more slowly. Everything above that area can should simply relax and not interfere with the process, which was good to hear you point out 👍🏼

Ok, but what if you are having your belly moving while your diaphragm stays unactivated (ribcage is motionless)? There is no that pump effect. It’s not a diaphragm breathing at all. People are different, they definitely happen to use opposite muscles for moving the same part of the body.

Is it normal to not get that deep, satisfying inhale at first try? Also, I feel like I move my belly voluntarily rather than it moving on its own through my breathing.
@elitechiroperformance3 жыл бұрын
It takes a while to get the hang of diaphragmatic breathing. Especially if you were really bad to begin with. I think it is common for beginners to "force" the expansion of the movement when inhaling. I prefer to think of it as a balloon that gradually expands as you inhale.

Typically when working on breathing we recommend to inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth. Exhaling with pursed lips can help to slow down and clear the lungs.

Awesome video, how would this take place whenever you are standing up though? I feel that if someone just finished eating you would need to slightly tuck lower stomach below belly button in? Only because of how uncomfortable it would feel. It’s definitely easier to be aware of this while laying down but standing it feels a bit different. A few other things to add, when stand up and breathing from lower stomach diaphragm area, should you brace then breath or slightly tuck in your lower stomach then breath?
@elitechiroperformance3 жыл бұрын
Essentially, the concepts are the same when standing but it is more difficult. When we aren't being physically active, we should be completely relaxed in the abdomen/belly (even when breathing) so tucking the belly would not be optimal.

I didn't know we have lungs in the stomach. it is good to breath like this while we are laying down because we don't need to support our spine, but standing up and breathing like this can be destructive to posture, stability and other things.

@@user3657 diaphragmatic must promote movement from the diaphragm, but not necesarily from the belly this lying breathing method is to get a feel of it and it's used in resting, it's nice, useful, but there's a time and place for it diaphragm should allow for the expansion of the ribcage, which can only happen if breathing/core is stable

Because i feel when i inhale i fill my diaphragm but then its stuck and i feel like i need more air. Been struggling with conciously breathing alot.
@elitechiroperformance3 жыл бұрын
Once the diaphragm cannot contract anymore, or when you feel the stuck feeling, it is OK to then expand the chest. Many people are avoiding the chest expansion component which will severely hinder the amount that you can inhale. Let me know if that helps.

Can this make you belly bigger over time?. I'm asking cause I used to have big belly when I was around 250, now I'm 160 with flat stomach. I was wondering if diaphragm breathing will make my belly bigger. Also I have a little rib flare, mostly on my left side, more than the right side. Is that a problem coming from bad breathing? Like chest breathing? I'm trying to incorporate more diaphragm breathing and lots of ab exercises
@Aman-gk1cb3 жыл бұрын
It won't make your belly bigger. The reasons why we have a large amounts of subcutaneous fat or visceral fat are sedentary lifestyle, diet high in carbs (surplus calories), little muscle mass, insulin resistance, medication, or other medical conditions.
@Kpfitness3602 жыл бұрын
Having more rib flare on the left means your pelvic is oriented towards right and is stuck there, its called lateral pelvic tilt. This will lead to lot of issues in the body because like pain duing walking, feeling more weight on the right. The solution is efficient breathing.

You said the inhale expansion should not below the belly button, is that right? That seems the most important key. Is there a simple way to control it?
@elitechiroperformance4 жыл бұрын
Maybe there is some confusion. We want the lower part of the abdomen to expand when we inhale. We like to think of it as a wave. As you start to breathe in the expansion should start low, then above the belly button, and then the chest.

Too much air = dizzy is common. Maybe you r not exhaling fully which creats a kind of a chemical imbalance when there is too much oxygen and a lack of co2. So you should inhale and exale for the same amount of time or take a bit longer exhales.
