I remember when Christopher Nolan did interviews for Oppenheimer last year, one of the interviewers talked about Devon Bostick in the movie and that he grew up with the Wimpy Kid films. Nolan then said “Rodrick Rules!” We got Nolan considering Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules a masterpiece of cinema before GTA 6.

do you deadass think that's actually how he found out he wasn't coming back to play rodrick? his reaction to the long haul trailer was a bit if i've ever seen one 💀
@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF3 сағат бұрын
@@lilicovič maybe op didn't mean that was when he found out, but more like the realization hit that the role was really over for him. i've never seen the vid you're talking about so i have no input about whether the whole thing is a bit or not, but people often have experienced retroactive sadness/regret over a decision they made prior that at the time they were totally okay with. i've experienced it, you probably have too, and if you haven't then you certainly will some day. so i don't think the possibility that he was a bit sad that he would no longer be able to play the role and maybe felt nostalgic too is ridiculous.

The main actors in this movie haven't hit puberty yet. In Dog Days you can tell they hit puberty. Jeff Kinney wanted to make a 4th movie with the same actors, but they hit puberty so quickly they weren't able to make a 4th movie with those actors. Also, when Jeff Kinney wrote the books, he wrote it like a kid writing in a journal. A kid writes about his middle school years with little to no plot, and a bunch of random events happening in the school year (or his/her home life) that barely connects together. The movies were made like the books, but with a bit of a plot to make the movie actually work as a movie.

The books themselves are very much all over the place. They’re basically a collection of different events that happen to Greg. The first film tried to encompass everything into more of a solid narrative (at least as much it could) This one seemed a bit more like the book where it seems all over the place at times. The film does try to have throughlines to tie some things together, but overall, it does feel like a collection of slice-of-life episodes in a film. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but probably why to you the first one felt more “a movie.”
