Greg never really specified what “they” were, so I’ll explain. During an “emission”, if you go outside, you will start advertising the moon and becoming hostile to anyone that isn’t affected by the moon. Basically becoming a puppet with an inexperienced puppeteer (it took over a week for them to break in) If you don’t put your whole body near the moon, but like an arm or something, it may look like it got burned, but the arm actually became a zombie. It’ll become itchy to the point where you want it amputated. Shortly after it is amputated (professionally or not), it’ll gain movement, you will likely die from blood loss or shock. Basically zombies caused by the moon

i feel like this is a mix of scp-001 when day breaks, bird box, and then moon from local 58. also if people are wondering why i would say all this is because scp-001 is just like the local 58 moon sorta, the moon tho didn't make phsyical injuries like how Rodrick said he got a nasty burn on his arm cause of the moonlight, tho if you get caught by a glimpse of the deadly laser sun, then you jest melt into a fleshy puddle but become something new. Local 58 moon was more different, the moon is an entity of it's own unlike the scp-001 otherwise the deadly laser sun, if anyone looks at the moon, then they worship it like it's a god. The bird box monster is an entity too but the only thing i can see in the book that kinda relates to it is by the voices, why do i mention that is because the monster can mimic peoples voices, more specifically, people friends or loved ones, but cannot interact with physical things like doors or for example, if someone was wearing a blindfold, it couldn't take it off, but why i mention this for another reason is because when Greg heard his mom at 0:32 on the outside of the house, but at 2:08 he hears it again, but i thought otherwise. You see, in the bathroom Greg specifically mentions his mom banging on the door, but at 0:32 he doesn't mention there being a banging like the bird box monster not being able to interact with physical things, this leads me to believe that Greg's mom got caught in the moon, She began to have the things Rodrick had all over her, became a worshiper, and due to those worshipers for scp-001, she has memories of them being in the bathroom, goes to the outside, wants to trick them into going outside and being a monster worshiper. so from what we know this moon works randomly, can somehow mimic the voices of loved ones and known ones but can't interact with the physical world, causes injuries similar to scp-001, and has the ability to make people it's worshipers. but i do gotta say, what happened to Manny? Edit: i forgot to mention that if a small part of a living being has been exposed to a glimpse of the moon, that exposed part can become a living thing.
