I was trying to find a way to use packing tape to make this way easier, and you nailed it Dice Witchery! I need to give this a shot :)

Hey, thanks!! Using the tape makes the mold openings so crisp, it saves so much time in finishing dice!

would you still recommend cap molds even if I don’t have a pressure pot?

I think if you can get as many bubbles out before you pour, it should be okay.

I like cutting the keys in. I've been using clay keys in the first pour, and it's a hassle getting them shaped well. This looks like a much better approach.

When you use the hot glue do you need to have the glue go over the lip of the cup, or do you need to have the glue just go over the edge of the lip of the cup to do the cap mold.
@DiceWitchery3 жыл бұрын
Likely the edge, depending on the cup you're using. You want to create a seal between the cup and the tape so no silicone leaks out the bottom.

Do you end up with raised edges on the cap or was it that I trimmed a bit too much from the face on the base?
@DiceWitchery3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I will get raised edges if my resin is too close to the end of the pot life and is too thick for the lid to squish. Adding some weight (a couple of washers work great) may help keep that from happening.

Does this work without a pressure pot?
@witchlamb3 жыл бұрын
is a pressure pot necessary for the silicone? i've made sprue molds without one that seem to have turned out fine, except i screwed up the facing of the d12 and d4 and need to redo them. i was thinking of trying this cap mold method instead, but i haven't gotten a pot yet. also i'm curious why you tint the silicone instead of leaving it clear. for the video? just easier to work with later?
@DiceWitchery3 жыл бұрын
A pressure pot is not necessary, but recommended. If you get a pressure pot in the future, you'll need to remake your molds though. Otherwise you'll get dice with "pimply" faces. DS20 is mostly opaque anyways, so why not tint them? I also like being able to tell my mold sets apart and tinting them makes that easy.
@mathijsbreed4 жыл бұрын
Great video, definitely going to try this! But I was wondering if it is possible to use mini red shot cups for it instead of the plastic cups? I want to keep the silicone waste to a minimum :)
@DiceWitchery4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I have another video where I now use PVC pipe couplings - much more reusable and uses a bit less silicone. Also, keep in mind if you make the walls of your molds too thin, you'll run the risk of dice warping.
@CrownofRa4 жыл бұрын
Is this method recommended for dice that have rounded corners? Also is there a reason you did so many individual moulds instead of a block?
@DiceWitchery4 жыл бұрын
You could use rounded edge dice, you just might have more to clean up/cut away at the openings. Doing individual molds vs a slab is pretty much personal preference. Doing them individually is easier for me to get them out.
@wanderingstar72274 жыл бұрын
I'm so grateful, this is exactly what I was looking for. One question, can I still dry without a pressure pot thingy?
@DiceWitchery4 жыл бұрын
Yes, although this method is easier with a pressure pot. But if you are careful and can get most of the big bubbles popped, you should do okay.
@altheajansenvanvuuren8244 жыл бұрын
From what I can see: let the resin sin in a hot water bath for 30min, pour it slowly, and from higher up in thin strands into the molds
@torif85314 жыл бұрын
This is so cool, would've never thought of the clear packing tape!! I do have a question though: Do you frequently get voids without a reservoir of extra resin??
@DiceWitchery4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! And no, the only time I get voids is if I press down too much on the lids. I overfill the molds a little and only press the lid down a bit. That's also why I make thicker lids, let gravity help keep them in place.
@Girlbrush.Threepwood4 жыл бұрын
At what pressure do you set your pressure pot? And how much silicone did you use for those 7 molds? I hate wasting materials D: Also, how many sets can you cast with those molds before needing to remake them?
@DiceWitchery4 жыл бұрын
My pressure pot is only rated for 50 psi max, so I did these at about 45 psi. When I cast resin I stay under 40 psi. Depending on your cup size, I think it was 6-8 oz for the bases and 3-4 oz for the lids. I haven't had DragonSkin 20 long enough to know its longevity, but I do know it has a higher tensile strength than say SortaClear 12, so my guesstimate is probably 30-40 pulls.

I considered this method for dice instead of the sprue or stacked style. More work and you would need to cast in a channel somewhere but more consistent clean results.

The packing tape is such a good idea! 😍 also, how much silicone do you mix for each part?

Hej. What happen if you don't have a vacuum chamber? Got normal silicone from a local craft shop.
@mandybeier99363 жыл бұрын
Sorry have to correct myself. I got latex from pebeo. Does that to works for resin molds?
@DiceWitchery3 жыл бұрын
@@mandybeier9936 I don't think so. You need a 2 part silicone for mold making. And to answer your previous question, you can make molds without a pressure pot or vacuum chamber, you'll just need to be careful with stirring so you don't introduce a lot of bubbles. If you decide to get a pressure pot later, you'll need to remake your molds in the pressure pot, otherwise your dice surface will come out uneven and "pimply."
@madhatterally10463 жыл бұрын
My first one I feel I have to remake the cap because when I place it on it would not stay on fully. So I think the cap needs to be thicker.
@DiceWitchery3 жыл бұрын
Definitely having a thick cap helps, then gravity can help keep it in place. Alternately, you can try putting something on the lid to weigh it down, or try flipping your mold upside down.
@crashtestgremlin76964 жыл бұрын
Eventually I'll learn not to cut corners. I just wasted a bunch of silicone because I thought I could do it without the hot glue seal. Great video, I'm just dumb.

I tried this using ecoflex 00-30 and clear packing tape. My silocone fused to the tape and I could not get it off at all without destroying the mold. Is it the eco flex or the tape that causes this. I know dragon skin is a lot firmer stuff.
@DiceWitchery4 жыл бұрын
I have not used Ecoflex 00-30, so I'm not sure on that one. DragonSkin20 is not super firm, I can pop dice easily out of the molds without cutting. It also has a higher tensile strength, so it doesn't scar easily, and can stretch a lot before tearing.

Do you use inhibit x on the dice before u pour the silicone

I do not. I've never had a need to use mold release on polished dice. If you're molding raw unpolished masters, baby powder works amazing and is so much cheaper.

When it comes to a master set does the casting process mess up the dice in any way?
@DiceWitchery4 жыл бұрын
I can only attest to the materials I've used, and so far I have had no adverse reactions to my masters. I've had masters professionally 3D printed from Shapeways, and from a home 3D printer, both were still pristine when demolding, and I've used DragonSkin20, SortaClear12, and MoldStar15 Slow (platinum cure silicones). As long as your masters are fully cured, you should have no issues.
