Bloomburrow is, in my experience, probably the pinnacle of Black mana being depicted in a positive light. While they do tend to be, relatively, more solitary, and can still be gruesome of course, they all still seem to actively contribute to the wellbeing of Valley as a whole rather than _just_ themselves or their tight-knit groups, with rats being knowledge-keepers, squirrels preparing food stockpiles, lizards maintaining fires for warmth, and of course the white-aligned bats probably being the most interactive with other communities, even if sometimes indirectly, being spiritual guides and keeping watch while others sleep. None of this makes them any less black-aligned. They still dabble in life and death, in hoarding resources and knowledge, but all for generally benevolent reasons rather than greedy or self-serving reasons. In a series where Black mana is often painted as the enemy, or at least as shady, it's nice to see a setting where Black is as welcome as any other slice of the pie.

I love how Bloomburrow expands our original understanding of the color pie with new concepts and combinations. B/W Bats talking about tradition, knowing their place, and being protectors of order, no green in sight? Love it! B/U rats with "beastmaster ranger"-coded insect companions? I LOVE IT. R/B Lizards seeking artistic meaning in arts and destruction, in a far less harmful way than Boggarts and Rakdos? THANK YOU! There's so much character in each faction. Though some pairs are still very similar to past iterations, food-crazed shaman squirrels and garbage-enamored bard raccoons are such fun concepts for their color combinations, I can tell WotC put a lot of love and care into this set. Birds are my personal favorite, they still hold the same self-important aura of any U/W combination but I appreciate their oath to serve and eagerness to support other spieces in very humble, chivalrous ways.

This set was perfectly timed for me. My youngest daughter has been learning the game, and the kitchen table laughter finally broke my wife, getting her interested in the game. Everybody has a firm enough grasp of the rules now that we can play several games without a debate over interactions or confusion about resolving a stack with four spells on it. Getting a set full of cutesy woodland creatures with a largely upbeat theme at that point goes a long way toward building a family tradition.

I've done a deep dive of the color pie before and even found a survey you could take where you answer a number of questions that you could chose the number of (higher numbers lead to more accuracy) and found myself to represent a tricolor of white, red and blue. White because i prefer order and unity over chaos, red because i driven by my passions and blue because i like to learn as much as i can. My red/blue connection is especially valuable to me as red/blue typically symbolizes creativity, which is is something i value above most other things. This said, while every single one of these tribes appeal to me in one way or another, i see myself as an otterfolk. Being that red/blue is my more dominant color pairing and that the otters value having fun and celebrating, I feel that i would enjoy myself the most as an otter. As an otter though, i would likely be a mage that would go to visit all the other tribes, traveling from one to the other and learning what i can of their magic and culture. Lizard's fire in particular would likely get my interest as i really like fire magic and could see myself weaving lightning and fire together in combat should the need arise. I would learn how the frogs grow their plants to sustain myself on my journey and get deep into the mysticism of the bats and squirrels. And when i am weary from my travels, i'd visit the rabbits or the raccoons for a bit, help them out with their troubles or their fields and swap stories. The birds might get on my nerves a little bit with their self importance but i would still find myself enjoying their displays and would respect their sense of duty. The mousefolk would be fun and i could see myself forming a very tight friendship with a traveling mouse buddy and help them on their heroic quest. Bloomburrow is an awesome setting and i really hope we get more of it in the future.

@c.d.dailey80133 ай бұрын
Wow! This blows my mind. I greatly admire the creativity of MTG. Yet they outdone themselves. I think the black species stand out. They are a lot nicer and tamer than black usually is. The squirrels are intriging. Squirrels are known for burying thier nuts. That is so famous. Squirrels mainly do it to store food for the winter. Some nuts don't get eaten. So they grow into new trees. I guess this is like the death and ressureston stuff that Golgari does. I haven't thought about it like that before. Golgari was in need of a refresh, and the squirrels definitely delivered. The opposite of black is Selesnya. Interestingly the rabbits really reminds me of hobbits. Hobbits is exclusivly a Tolkien thing. In other media, they are called halflings and kithkin. This is do avoid copyrifht lawsuits. Hobbits are like rabbits. They are cute little guys that have homes underground. The words hobbit and rabbit even sound similar. Bloomburrow goes all in on the similarity. The rabits have the same lifestyle as hobbits. They even have Selesnya just like hobbit-like creature types. There are two opposing species that remind me of Secret of Nimh. Mrs. Brisby is a mouse. She is brave and heroic. She faces a lot of danger in order to save her son. The Boros mice are just like her. The rats of Nimh are very intellegent due to being in a lab. They are also mysterious and secretive. The Dimir rats are similar. The one rat character that best fits Dimir is Jenner. He is a rather villainous and cunning character. He is totally content with stealing electricity from the humans. He is not willing to go through the trouble of moving to Thorn Valley just to do the right thing. Jenner is pretty screwed up. Yet his mentality is just like vermin in real life. So I don't think Sevret of Nimh overdid the villany. This fits really well with Dimir. Rats are actually really closely related to mice. They look similar. They are even in the mouse-like group in the rodents. It is funny for mice and rats in Bloomburrow to have opposite pairs. Dimir and Boros are opposites. I guess that is good for showing contrast. Rakdos and Simic are another pair of opposites. The representitive speciaes are alike in being the only cold blooded ones. That is odd. That is another contrast. My imagination is running wild. It blows my mind when MTG makes another new plane. There is a fresh new take on the color pie. This video does start out with a comparison to Ravniva. That is good. It gives some grounding in tradition before the wierd stuff starts. Bloomburrow isn't the only plane that reimagins color pairs. Theoros has them as different deities in a pantheon. It also has five monocolor deities. Kaldheim has the color pairs as different realms in the world tree. They are associated with diffrent races. Even three color combos can be reimagined. New Capenna is a reimagining of Alara with cities and noir. Both have shards. Ikoria is a reimagining of Tarkir with mosters and crystals. Both have wedges. I was wondering if there was some rhyme or reason in how color combos get depicted. But nope. They can be depicted is a wuole slew of ways. As long as something fits within the color aesthetics and philosophy, it is good enough. Even the philosophy can bend. Arcavios and New Capenna has whole new spins on philosophy. DiceTry has a video on each of them and they are awesome. This Bloomburrow video is just like that. A good series for DiceTry would be to go to every plane and explain the color pie. That would be incredible. There are a few videos that already fit. MTG is very creative, and that is amazing. DND is also very creative. I wonder if that could fit in. There are quite a few crossover products. I think one can play DND and have a Bloomburrow campaign. That would be awesome. That is good for homebrew. I would just go for a reskin. I like to make it so only class affects battle performance. It is a way to streamline things. This campaign would replace regular fantasy races with the animal species. The only difference is flavor and roleplaying. Each species can be any class. They would work normally in combat.

Raccoons are definitely my favorite from this setting, from both a flavor and mechanic perspective.

Otters are my favorite, but I think with my personality, I'd probably be a frog, maybe a bat.

You know, I like to think our guide became a rat, a collector of knowledge and it would explain why the rats more willing to share knowledge with him

Maybe I'm the only one that thinks this, but I think we should get a lot more of the dual colors. Or that every plane should have one set. They just work so well

can you make a video about the bloomburrow 3 colored creatures or depiction of animals out of their pair? Like Glarb, Helga, Baylen, Flubs, Ms Bumblflower, Mr Foxglove, Zinnia, Arthur. Tidecaller Mentor shows a rat teaching blue spells to a rabbit and so on.

I do wish the animal factions had unique names so we had something other than just *insert animal*folk, if anyone has played the board game root I think of that
