True story: I saw Dick Dale live a few years ago. Upon taking the stage, he walked over to his amp, held his guitar the speaker and out came some epic feedback. Then he strutted to the mic and confidently proclaimed to the crowd, "I invented that shit."

@@anonymoushuman7794 The Showman amps were named after Dick. Those amps are POWER HOUSES! Later came out with the Dual Showman and The Dual Showman Reverbs. Great amps, the Dual Showman Reverbs are very close to a Twin Reverb circuit.

Well back in those days, live music was generally played in more formal settings with more formal attire. It wasn’t until the mid-late 60’s that dressing however you wanted became commonplace in the music industry. If you were gonna be on tv like the Dick Clark show, you’d wear a suit.

I can't get over that picking, some of my favorite guitarist are Tony Iommi, Eddie Van Halen, Dimebag Darrell, Randy Rhodes, Marty Friedman, but Dick Dale's extremely fast picking style, combined with his upside down left handed guitar, the way he pushed amplifiers past their limits, and how he handled reverb, it's truly mind blowing. Plus the fact that even now in his 70's, he can put on quite the energetic show. A very sadly under rated guitarist.

The fast-picking technique originates from Arabic music. Dick Dale (who was half-Arab) said he learnt the fast-picking technique from his Lebanese-Arab uncle, who played like that on the Arabic Oud (ancestor of the guitar). Dale adapted the technique onto the electric guitar, creating surf-rock music. Dale was probably the first rockstar to use Eastern musical techniques, several years before The Beatles started experimenting with Indian music.

In terms of sheer volume, Dick Dale in the 1990s was 11 - up there with Motorhead. One of the loudest gigs I've ever been to.

Watched a short film about the beginnings of “Surf” music and you were interviewed for most of the vid. All the “Beach Bands” owe you a debt of gratitude 🙏🏻 . And many bands of the day (‘60’s- early ‘80’s) said your sound was what they based a lot of tunes on. Keep on rockin’ Dick!

@@georgeskanderbeg3242 Yeah, but it's also mixed with Egyptian and Arabic stuff (the song is about a woman named "Miserlou", an Egyptian Muslim. The singer is thought to be some Christian Greek dude who wants her.)

I was in high school around this time and saw Dick Dale play the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio. At one point, he walked through the crowd playing a solo for what felt like 15 minutes. We were towards the front and lost track of him in the crowd. Several years later, my college roommate told me he had a friend at that show who told him that Dick Dale actually walked into the middle of High Street in front of the venue, which was the main road through the city, and played in the center of the street while traffic drove past on either side of him.

I'm a fan of DD. This song and King Of The Surf Guitar are my two faves of his. Listen to the quick bends in KOTSG and you'll know why I also love and admire that tune. Like many, I found my way to DD thanks to Quentin T. I love Misirlou and attempt to play it, but tend to get tangled up on that tremolo picking on the looser high end strings. Dick is known for playing with very thick strings (much like SRV) so I'm sure that helped him develop that style. In this vid, it is just about as much fun to watch the intensity of the drummer as it is to watch the man. Got to hear him play live in a club a few years back. The next morning my ears were ringing like a .44 mag had been shot off near my head. LOL Dude plays LOUD!

@mrz80
@mrz80 2 жыл бұрын
I gather he either couldn't find or couldn't afford a left handed guitar when he was first learning to play, so he learned on a right handed guitar turned upside down. When he was able to get a left-handed Strat he strung it the way he was used to. Hendrix was sort of the opposite. He played a right-handed Strat restrung "properly" for a lefty.

He's my all time musical hero! His music has been the background themes in my head since I came to California from Hawaii 55 years ago.
