Dick Donner's surprise Goonies visit!

In loving memory of Dick Donner.
You may have heard the story of how, as filming of the goonies neared an end, Dick expressed his eagerness to get home to Hawaii away from all the noise and commotion.
Steven Spielberg decided to thwart Dick’s efforts to find solitude, and sent the cast to Hawaii as a surprise birthday present.
Dick was definitely surprised!

"hey Dick, you have no cereal" hahaha this is brilliant - gotta love Spielberg's childlike humor. It just goes to show how awesome these dudes were as humans to completely let those kids be kids - they each endeared themselves to the audience because they were playing pretentious, adult-written versions of themselves that would never sound like them (looking at you, modern "IT"). This is the true magic of the movie - I'm sure it was like that on set every day, herding cats, but the patience got the beautiful results. What a great bunch of kids too and by all accounts, every single one of them turned out to be great humans too.

This was a prank pulled by Spielberg. Dick told him at the end of shooting the Goonies "I love those kids, but damn... I gotta get out of here!" This was the day after wrap and Dick flew home. Spielberg flew the kids out first to beat him home.

Jeff Cohen(Chunk) asked him for a recommendation for law school admissions, and Donner replied by paying all of his tuition, so you're absolutely right!

@@garybrusse9957 Actually, Dick flew to Maui immediately after wrapping the picture. The kids still had two days of 2nd Unit work under Steven's direction. We all flew to Maui the morning after wrapping the 2nd Unit work.

He said "I love 'em to pieces, but I can't stand it anymore! After shooting wrapped Steven Spielberg put the whole cast on a plane to Hawaii to surprise Donner when he got home. The goonies kids were in on it, that's why they are saying things like "we're gonna keep shooting sequels, Dick!" "We're gonna stay with you the whole time you're here!" Lol

What a treat to find this! Goonies is one of my most favorite and cherished movies from my childhood. It's so fun and wholesome. It's beautiful to see that it was wonderful behind the camera too.

OMG i didn't realise that this was filmed. Spielberg flew them all out to Huwaii to surprise Dick, he said to Spielberg when they wrapped that he couldn't wait to get away for some peace and quiet. Little did he know that the whole cast were waiting for him.

@@ohohvalerie We went to the movies every weekend, sometimes we would see 3 movies or even 4 depending on what was playing at the time. Almost every movie memory I have from the 70's, and 80's were with him. The 90's on up we watched on VHS, DVD, and cable LOL ... not the same as sneaking candy and soda into the theaters 😆 but it's the time spent together ❤️.

Richard Donner looked genuinely surprised and very pleased to see them all. You can tell that there was a very close bond there between him and the cast and crew. I’ve watched interviews from some of the cast in particular Sean Astin who talk fondly about Donner and mentioned visiting his Hawaii home a year later and he shown some of the cast the music video they filmed for MTV. Sean said they was all jumping up and down singing ‘Good Enough’ and getting over exited at the video which as you can tell by this gem and behind the scenes footage was loud, over talky and interruptive as they were just kids. Sean said they all loved it but at the time they was just exhausted as they only just finished filming the movie.

Donner did said in a interview, it was a year after the production finished. First he saw Josh Brolin and he turned around and he saw the whole cast. I believe Spielberg flew them all up there.

Actually, it was less than a week after production wrapped. The cast had several days of 2nd Unit filming to do before they could fly to Maui to surprise Dick.

For all the folks who think this is heartwarming, dont know that the director wanted to return home and couldn't stand those pesky kids. Spielberg sent those kids to the directors house as a prank... him repeating i don't believe this is all about the lengths to which the crew sent these kids as a prank.
