The thing to understand about The Bible is that one has to have enough sense to distinguish between metaphors and parables and what is to be taken as literal fact. The message behind some of the stories and life lessons are what is to be taken as fact. But so many people are taught a literal interpretation, and most people know only what they are told.

I said at the end of my post that "most people know only what they are told." Many people were taught a version of The Bible that encouraged docility during and after slavery. The people I just mentioned saw past that, read for themselves, and drew the messages of liberation (Exodus 21:16, Revelation 13:10, etc) that were not taught to the average person.
