So this is the "bad faith" review that everyone is upset about? Bruised egos aside, I don't see why this caused so much controversy. There's actually a lot of great writing advice here.

I don’t know about crazy, they’re just very “modern” with how consumed by Internet drama their minds and emotions are. They want to believe that Dick tried to torch Isom in this review that they haven’t watched because Eric’s “response” either misunderstood Dick’s points or he purposefully twisted things to persuade listeners like some Pied Piper. I think it’s a fine trash fire they have going on here, everyone thank Nina for badgering Dick into reading a book that she had never read.

There's technically millions on the line from EJ's point of view. He seems to have invested in a lot of human and physical resources and would be counting on every release making millions. What is annoying is "the fellowship" grew from people finding others that thought the same way they were thinking.. "that star wars movie was cr4ppy, right?" and then we may have a moment where the owners / readers of Isom may have the same realisation and find a voice for that in the CG crowd. Hope that came out some what sensible.. :/

@@anthroparion He reinvested heavily back into his business, so there is a lot riding on future sales as obvious as a statement as that is. He stopped releasing “transparency reports” so the people interested in crunching numbers are now in the dark as to his financials after the first Isom. I’ve heard that he spent 350k on employee salary in one quarter, which included contractor work and people have assured me that the warehouse was a big cost as well.

I’ve been supporting Comicsgate since slightly before EVS was fired from DC. Came here after reading ISOM for the first time just now. It’s hard to get through. I almost couldn’t tolerate the nothingness. It’s like bad rap. The panels showing off ISOM’s (patent pending) powers feel shoved in because Eric thought they looked cool. One panel shouldn’t destroy continuity of the page. Yet in ISOM there are pages back to back with practically that same bright white lighting, posing, hero shot and overall feel. Directing the readers eye is so important in comics. Making the reader want to turn the page is an art not achieved with ISOM. The inner-monologue is obtrusive when introduced randomly in the middle of the book for no good reason other than to up the page count. Somehow it manages to feel like a long read while also being short and unsatisfying.
@thestranger9608

The issue is he tried making this a 90 page book rather than a 20-30 page book which caused all these continuity issues and pointless subplots. He's not ready for a mega sized issue he should have went the conventional route, let it run its course, get the feedback and improve on the next issue. Never thought i d see a comic creator who is doing too much and too little at the same time.

@@earwigismadlove its issue 1 of a universe that will maintain its continuity. Start small and build up to big events, I prefer a slower paced story. If you jump straight into world or universe destroying stakes it gets old and you ultimately hit the reset button on the timeline because it gets harder to outdo the last event. Most people are tired of buying a series of books only for the entire timeline and list of events to be wiped out like it never happened or thrown into some multi verse crap where they can claim it was a different iteration of a character on earth #27437284 lol. I'll have way more patience with Eric's company especially after seeing the new talent hes bringing in.

For what it's worth, with Valiant, it's one long track from him looking at photos (there might be a cut here) to showing his bro's desk, glasses and pipe, then some newspaper clippings showing them saving Donald Duck's nephews and Goofy, and then some family photos of them being clowns and having a sense of humor (totally not like Valiant is behaving in the movie) and then the three of them going into business (w/Delores) and then finally him asleep with an empty whisky bottle. Glorious cinematography if a little heavy handed on the mise en scene (it's a tracking shot for the audience only not just some accidental placement etc). But the point stands, you know everything you need to about Valiant in about 20-30 seconds.

I love Eric for his commentary and in-depth comics knowledge. But Isom 1 and 2 were major back-to-back letdowns. Isom 1 should've dealt with Darren coaxing Avery out of retirement by kidnapping someone either his sister or himself used to be close to; without harming the girl, maybe even going so far as to showcase Darren's chivalry and respect towards women so he's got a redeeming quality other than his eloquence and charisma going for him. Have Altona dig up Santwan's physical weakness or psychological trigger that'll ultimately turn the tides and grant Avery the upper hand. The issue could end on Darren framing Avery and enlisting Alphacore. Isom 2 would then be about Isom vs. Alphacore and Avery mostly on the run / trying to clear his name since he can't take on all of them at once. Maybe he has some inside knowledge on Yaira (thanks to his Edna Mode tech support) so he can get into their good graces and convince them to set aside their hostility towards him as they've been trying to track down Yaira for a while; thereby putting their code of honor (superceding the handsome payment they received from Darren) on display and lightly characterizing them as well. Isom 3 could have Isom and Alphacore team up going after Yaira. Obviously, there's more to the crimes she's allegedly committed. Maybe Darren was experimenting on her or manipulating her during her fish-out-of-water status (depending on how old she is or whether she's even human). Darren could be pursuit of ancient/extraterrestial wisdom to be extracted from her, and his luring Avery out of retirement is both a way to reconnect with him and share said wisdom AND to tempt him and ultimately prove that Avery was never morally superior to him and nothing but a hypocrite. Such developments might seamlessly tie into the Alien/God metal heads etc.

I could think of a thousand ways to do this story way better for one: -His sister calls him up says no one’s heard from Jasmine in a while and Mrs. Newman is worried -He tries to kind of brush it off saying something like “Well, Mrs. Newman always worries too much anyways… ever since I knew her back at church. Besides I don’t do the hero thing anymore; I the police and Alpha core should be more than enough to handle it. -the sister begs saying “at least do it for me, your sister.” -he relents and says fine, but just a check in, nothing more. - he checks on her at the club and maybe we get some kind of monologue about how when he knew Daron he was a thug and he HOPES Darron’s past that life, but he has as bad feeling in the out of his stomach. -During him talking to himself/us, he mentions “I might be rusty but Super Strength, Durability, Agility, and muscle memory is probably overkill anyways, doesn’t matter if i been out the game for 10 years or so… besides this is just a check up.” He might also explain that being an except still requires a lot of physical fitness, training and conditioning to really tap into your ability, but since retirement he’s really just worked on looking good and feeling good while working now -During the check up he starts to notice some shady, supernatural stuff going on around the club but isn’t too worried yet. But talking to Jasmine that bad feeling doesn’t go away as she is refusing to talk to him and avoiding him. But he’s resigned himself to just head back and let his sister know Jasmine isn’t budging. But as he’s turns to walk away he notices a couple of Guard’s grabbing a girl kind of violently and saying some bad guy shit like “WHERE ARE YOU GOIGN? You’re property of Darron! You don’t leave unless the boss tells you to!” And she can say something with tears in her eyes like “B-but my baby? I’ve been here for 2 days! This job’s not worth it if I don’t see my- “ she gets slapped” -Isom appears behind the goons and says the whole “why are you so comfortable putting your hands on someone like that?” And hits the guy. A thought bubble appears where Isom says “ gotta remember: “light” touch. There’s every chance anyone can be an Excep. But always air on the side of caution…” - second guy comes up with like a taser that does nothing. Isom replies “this disrespect won’t be tolerated” and he knocks the guy out. And after taking on a few more thugs, Isom comes face to face with that big dude, everyone in the club has cleared out and now Isom is looking up at this hulking dude and he follows up on that first thought about assuming everyone is normal with “….of course…. Some are more obvious than others… no light touch with this one.” -Isom gets bodied and says to us…”welp… I said I was rusty, didn’t I?” Darron appeared, smug as can be, gives his little speech and has the big guy throw Isom out the club, literally and forcefully. There you can have the stupid car scene and Yaira. -Then just follow that up with him going to his sister telling her he found Jasmine, and she’s safe for now. He tells her Darron is up to something and that he wants to figure it out. -[Note: on the way to checking on Jasmine he can be noticing that there’s not much being done about a lot of the crime going on, in fact it’s mostly just guys in uniform waiting for someone else to come deal with it. He considers getting involved a couple of times but reminds himself and us that he’s no super hero anymore. - We end Issue 1 with Isom telling his sister whatever Darron’s up to he’s not gonna sit idle while he uses and abuses more people. And he says “I might not be a detective, but… if no one else is going to do something…maybe ISOM has to.” We end the final page with like a splash page where he’s completely suited up, doing some type of over the top training. [As for all the other set ups for characters that are clearly getting their own series, cut most of it out, even Alpha Core and Yaira shouldn’t take up more space than a mention; it’s ISOM, he should be the focus.] Definitely not a perfect alternative but it at least gives some information about the guy.

I bought Isom #1 and was up to reading it, but I was dismayed over how fucking badly it's written. The art is good, but it's written in this BS vague way to be "intriguing" but there isn't Anything substantial to hold onto to get excited about the next issue which I will not be buying. Eric tries to sound smart and it shows in his writing. His dialogue reads like he's rehearsing trying to not sound like a total dope when speaking aloud.

@truefanforum3273

@@sethdanielwBut at least most #1s have some sort of foundation and try to explain the basics. Isom doesn't do that. Characters are introduced that have no bearing on the main story and then disappear, and what should be important to the main story is ignored. Isom goes from looking for the missing girl to basically saying "forget about her." Unless Eric drastically improves the writing, which I highly doubt, then this thing is doomed to failure. Only the fanatics will remain while everyone else rightly abandons it.
@sethdanielw
@sethdanielw Жыл бұрын
@@truefanforum3273 you're right that "most" are like that, but some of my favorites don't do that at all. One of my favorite recent comics, firepower, barely even has words in the beginning. I think storytelling doesn't always have to follow the same formula. Also, I agree that the writing could use more work, but frankly, it's the art that I think could be even better. I've bought some horrible comics that kept me buying because the art was so good. Maybe that's just because I'm an artist and like the study material, but either way it stands. Also, full disclosure, I haven't bought isom 2 yet because the story doesn't intrigue me much and the art doesn't make up for what the story lacks, but I'm a big fan of what Erick is doing and I might buy it one day. Marvel and DC have let me down plenty of times, so I'm always supportive of good alternatives. Competition is great.

The book turns out to really be a white knight story that's also about emasculating a man, especially since he is a great hero that means he should be better at fighting or using his power

Two things I’m surprised they didn’t talk about: 1) Avery and Darren’s first meeting makes no sense. They shoot the shit for a moment, then Avery asks Darren if he knows anything about Jasmine. Darren then immediately brings Avery into the club, has him sit down, tells him all about himself, says how valuable “young ladies like Jasmine are” to his operation that he flat out says does illegal things, and to order his guards to force Avery out. What makes this weird is that they aren’t having a back-and-forth; the last words out of Avery’s mouth before all this was to ask OUTSIDE if Darren had seen Jasmine anywhere. 2) Avery’s motivation for doing all this. He says it in narration in the beginning. His mommy would be mad at him. That’s literally it. I can see why Eric marketed his whole book on the back of “Marvel and DC have gone WOKE” and all that garbage. If I were him, I wouldn’t want to market it on the back of its content either.

Don't think Rippa will make it as a comic creator. Sure, his past success and popularity got it funded but as an actual creator/writer I don't see it being above average. So far his character designs are generic and based off reviews the writing is subpar. He uses the same excuses regarding Isom's design - "Oh, it's supposed to be simple looking! You'll see why later!" Simple doesn't mean boring or less eyecatching. Many superhero designs are simple but they are iconic, too. He seems too hardheaded to improve.

I said the same thing, the guy literally makes his main character not memorable at all. The 2 most important things of a character appealing to the human eye is costume, and what lies under the iconic costume! Those 2 things alone will grab new readers! Just look at icons such as Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman, their costumes alone grab the reader’s attention. Not to mention so many people cosplay as these characters BECAUSE of their great costumes, whereas Isoms costume wouldn’t even be something I’d where as pajamas. The main characters costume to me is very forgettable, and the entire “simple” argument to me is just a sorry excuse for why he can’t be more creative. Lack of imagination, the very thing he complains about in his comic reviews is ironically going to be his downfall.
@thestranger9608

Yup, i think if Isom was written a lot better the costume could be a bit more forgivable at least for this first arc, but it's important to sell the character and their design. I don't see him making it either tbh, sure he might fund a few projects but after that he's gonna be done, his methods are not gonna last in the long run especially if he doesn't get smart about this and try to improve his craft.

it's a 96 page issue 1, though and effectively 3 or 4 regular comic books in length. that was part of how Eric was pitching it before he even launched the campaign for the first issue. why it was going to be more expensive than a regular comic book. high quality materials going into the book and 96 pages of high quality, ad free content, unlike a regular comic book that's less than 30 pages and has ads in it. if he still has them up, go watch old videos of eric talking about isom before the first campaign launched. the excuse that it's just a first issue comes off as weak to someone who remembers part of their reason for buying it in the first place was being told i'd effectively be getting the first 3 or 4 issues of any other regular comic book series bundled in this one 96 page book. if Eric still has them up, you can probably find videos on his channel of him talking up how much content we'd be getting in Isom 1 and that being part of the reason for the price he wanted to charge for it.

What Dick did was more like "This makes no sense, why did Eren turn into a Titan? It wasn't immediately explained to me therefore its bad" and then "Why is Eren even trying to kill Titans? It makes no sense" Even though anyone who paid even 1% attention would know since episode 1 exactly why he wants to... You see the colossal difference right? The first example is how reviews are done, you talk about specifics and you explain your reasoning as to why X thing is bad to you. The second example is someone who has no argument and is trying to pull crap out of his ass desperately so he can fling it. DIck got absolutely annihilated as far as that goes. They keep remaking Star Wars, Alien, Predator, Terminator ect, ect and many of them rarely out do the original or early years of why they was popular in the first place. I do disagree with Mr. July on a few things. He isn't a big fan of alternate universes. I like stuff like that as stand alone or what if type stories. Mr. July also stated people who like Miles Morales are " fake fans." Miles Morales is my second favorite Spider Man character and he feels like his own thing because he travels the multiverse or spiderverse in this case. I do agree with Mr. July, it's not always a good thing to erase a hero's sacrifice because then it does seem like their life and death was pointless or a fake out and you should handle it like how Guardians of the Galaxy did. If you encounter someone who dies but is alive in another universe it may not really be the full version person you was with. I liked how they did that. Our Gamora really did die after all.

Or I back a book that a friend has worked on, such as our cover artist Jason Wright on Inglorious Rex, Starlight Cats, and Ethos. There are enough of those campaigns that I don't have to throw money into a pot that already has more than a million dollars in it. Seems like anyone who reaches that level has a big target painted on their back that loudmouths like Masterson have to hurl invectives at. Since our KZbin channel simply showcases our TV series and comic book, and doesn't thirst for "clicks", I don't have to engage in negative criticism of anyone - it's just a waste of time when I could be creating instead. @@Rughead12319 it's not free, but I think OP is trying to say the barrier to entry for comics is extremely low -- which it is.

Hey guys, I watched this video like you requested. Let me hit the high points: *Complaint #1:* We don't know what Isom's powers are up front. *Rebuttal:* You're not supposed to. It's intentional that we learn Isom's capabilities as we go. If you're used to comics that tell you what the hero's powers are up front -- well, this isn't that kind of comic. You can say you don't like that kind of comic, but that's a personal preference. (Personally, I don't see much difference between ISOM and the mentioned-later SPAWN in this respect: In both cases the author knows things about the main character's powers that you don't. The only difference is that in ISOM the main character knows what his powers are, too, but that doesn't obligate the main character, or the author, to tell you what they are. After all, John Wick never turns to the camera and says, "What these jerks who killed my puppy didn't know is that I'm a retired master assassin with gun-fu skills, a personal arsenal, and access to a hotel that offers lodging and helpful accessories to people in my former line of work" -- you learn that as you go through the movie.) *Complaint #2:* Rippaverse doesn't have a good editor. *Rebuttal:* Well, we actually agree there. Somebody with actual editing skills needs to go over each Rippaverse book before it goes to print so that little errors can be found and fixed. (Here's a good assortment of errors I found of almost every kind: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6nPepJ6eaiisKc&pp=gAQBiAQB) *Complaint #3:* The book starts "Two Weeks Earlier" instead of now. *Rebuttal:* I cover all the issues generated by this in the following video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmbOl3Zog9eZjtk&pp=gAQBiAQB *Complaint #4:* "Mrs. Newman" is an undefined character in the book. *Rebuttal:* Mrs. Newman is explicitly defined in the comic: kzbin.infomSUCjl886ok *Complaint #5:* Isom punches through a security guard's stomach, basically murdering the guy. *Rebuttal:* Misinterpretation. Isom cracks the guy's ribs, that's all. *Complaint #6:* The origin of the character isn't given right away. *Rebuttal:* The book's title is "Ill-Advised, PART ONE", so it's not realistic to expect everything be revealed in the first issue. Besides, holding off on a hero's origin is seriously *not* unknown in comics: kzbin.infoOicLDLEXG0o *Complaint #7:* In the first fight between Isom and Santwan, Santwan wins handily. How does Isom win the second fight with no training or powering-up in-between? *Rebuttal:* There may actually have been a powering-up in-between, but it's not depicted well enough to be immediately recognizable, so you can't really be blamed if you missed it -- I missed it, too: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaSrXpttnNeUhbc&pp=gAQBiAQB. Worst-case, Isom won the second time on account of using different tactics (i.e., ramming Santwan through a wall rather than just punching him). *Complaint #8:* Avery and Althea talk about Althea's husband's death in front of her young daughter. *Rebuttal:* Yeah, that was an awkward moment. Would've thought they'd save any comments like that for after the girl was put to bed. *Complaint #9:* We never find out what Avery's ranch specializes in. *Rebuttal:* We never read any of Clark Kent's Daily Planet articles, either. That's not really important. Avery has a ranch. It does some thing that ranches do. P.S.: "Image Comics was a bunch of guys who knew how to write and draw." OMG what? So far as writing was concerned, YOUNGBLOOD and WildC.A.T.s were ass from the get-go. SPAWN only kept its level because McFarlane almost immediately stopped writing it -- and then he effed up the numbering so issues 19 and 20 came out after 21. SHADOWHAWK was a detective story minus any actual clues. God only knows what WETWORKS was supposed to be. Then only founding Image comic that turned out original in any way, shape, or form was SAVAGE DRAGON, and even that didn't feature the best writing -- Larsen himself added pages in the first trade paperback of SAVAGE DRAGON to help out his original story.

Everything about John Wick is explained in that one scene about 20 minutes into the movie. He's the greatest assassin ever, the boogeyman, killed a man with a pencil, killer who will stop at nothing. We never get that scene in Isom. And I see little point in keeping so much of his power secret for 100 pages. You have to give the audience SOMETHING. We are watching a guy who fully understands the rules of his universe and we the audience are clueless to them. It's like if Aladdin started making wishes without the genie explaining what the lamp is and how it works. With Isom we are sitting around for a hundred pages waiting for a genie who never shows up.

@@vito "He's the greatest assassin ever, the boogeyman, killed a man with a pencil, killer who will stop at nothing." Yeah, but how does that actually play out in the "real world"? It's not until we see him fight for the first time that we see a bit of what being all that *means.* Moreover, did it have to be written as ham-fistedly as that? I thought all that up-front exposition made "John Wick" a lesser movie. I would've rather seen a movie that started out with the wife's death, introduced and then killed the puppy, and then *gradually* showed just whom the mob guys had messed with. Now, that's my preference -- it's not *wrong* that "John Wick" basically gave the whole game away up front. But it's clear "John Wick" wasn't written for cerebral people. Likewise, people who want to be challenged when they read will go more for things like Brad Meltzer's IDENTITY CRISIS (which I recently made a couple videos on), which constantly had this vibe of "there's something really bad going on here but I can't put my finger on it". Building to the revelations makes the revelations more fulfilling. So it's okay to want that "faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to yadda yadda" power summary in a book. But all you're telling me is that you're preferring not to do any heavy lifting. If Eric *wants* his readers to do some heavy lifting -- and it's clear that he does -- then you're simply not the kind of reader to whom he's appealing. (Also, make sure you watch the video attached to my rebuttal to Complaint #7 because there might be more about Isom's powers in the book than y'all think.)

@@MichaelJPartyka But the mysteries around Isom's powers aren't even interesting. He isn't firing energy blasts or using crazy tech. He just seems to have super strength. I have to wait for an issue 2 to confirm that a guy has super strength? That's the big mystery you're building up to?

@@vito yo, i lurk in CG chatrooms, for some reasons since the rippa thing, anna's been doing her diligence and telling creators to stay away for you in chats (this is the same girl that has YOU and dick in her intro video). im not trying to stir the pot, half of cg are still individuals who think for themselves, and low info/knee jerk anna isnt gonna stop them from buying the book, but she's directly and publicly doing this to artists in their chats, and that's anti-everything these nonsense movements stand for.

... I like how Dick brings up Eddie Valiant, but then pretends that Isom needs to have a family member be kidnapped or killed for Isom to have stakes. Eddie refused to do jobs related to toons, but took the job at the beginning for the super high stakes of ... $100!!! Man those were some super high stakes to get people invested in the story right away and that movie didn't have any jarring cameos from characters that had no bearing on the main story.... oh... wait... the opposite of all that.

@@jewishwario $100 in the 1940s would be worth about $2k in 2024...maybe that sounds like a lot of money to you, but there are billions of people that have worked for $2k, but significantly less people have had a family member kidnapped and/or killed. As far as stakes go, $2k is way lower than having a family member abducted and/or killed. You can pretend I'm an idiot all you want, but no one with a standard IQ is going to buy what you are selling. Just like no one is going to believe that you are actually Mister Metokur. He is actually smart, you're just an imposter.
