A rare documentary about legendary make-up artist Dick Smith featuring an interesting tour in his underground basement at his home that was turned into secret makeup lab. In this early interview, Mr. Smith talks about the achievements, techniques and procedures that he practiced to reach his notable old age makeup on Dustin Hoffman for "Little Big Man" (1970).

Thank you for publishing this film. Back in the 70's when I was fortunate enough to study with Dick he would spend HOURS on the phone explaining to me how this or that process was done. Obviously this was before KZbin and back then this footage would have been of invaluable help...as I hope it is to current students of Dick's.

Michael Davy, What a pleasant surprise to see you here in the comments! Mr. Davy, Do you think it would be possible for me to do a makeup (similar in scale to this one), using foamed Water-Melon? I'm concerned that pieces of this size, in silicone, will be quite heavy. Additionally, I'm curious about the pliability of foamed Water-Melon. I've noticed it seems softer than Super Baldeez, and Trauma Skin fx, but I've yet to foam it. Will it emote well, or do you think it might be too firm? No rush, I just started the scuplt. But, I'd certainly appreciate your input.

OMG I shot this in 16mm when I was at NYU with Dick's son David who directed it !! Wow cool to see after all these years. I think we shot this in '73 or '74

Hi, what year did you film this? I am doing an essay on Dick Smith and cant find the year this was shot. Would be helpful for my research :)

LBM was amazing, but Amadeus was -- IMO -- the pinnacle of Smith's (and the industry's) artistry in old-age make-up. Watch something new like Prometheus and Guy Pierce's make-up is so well-sculpted but leaves out details like the hump and eyelid prosthetics Smith shows here, which diminishes the overall effect tremendously. Smith's eye for detail and level of practical know-how (and generosity!) is so rare -- in ANY generation.
