What a treat! thoroughly enjoyed this, depsite not being a guitar player.... but old enough to remember them in concert.......was early 70's....at the Warehouse in N.O.LA ~ there was a lot of smoke in the place, and they played for it seemed for hours....we certainly got our moneys worth...Forever AB fan!

Dickie Betts has this uncanny ability to meld blues and country with a little jazz, that much is evident. I'm not contesting that. However, I must ask the question, at the risk of sounding like an insubordinate smart-ass, born way too late in 1974...what was rock and roll, if not a crazy marriage of different elements such as these? Dickie was a man OF his time, helping to mix in the elements that eventually came to be known as rock and roll. Kudos!

I was a part of that whole time period also. Though a little later in the Game as to when Dickie himself started jamming. And also, for me at least, from the Northern end of the Country. But, from what I recall from back during that time period was what was truly, almost like a world wide spiritual like awakening in music that I just don't see around these days. And it is sorely missed by us pre-digital world players. I remember going to the local County parks & stuff during the early & late 70's & you would have at LEAST a dozen or two Musicians of ALL types. ALL instruments, ALL Genre's ... Just "Show up". Just because they "knew" that the "Park" was the place to go to meet other musicians & jam. (At least in my area. Other parts of the Country would be other places, like Down in Daytona? I remember there was a couple of Bars that ALWAYS held "open Mic" Jams. Which is where I had met & jammed with some of the Brothers myself back in the early 80's.) But, None of these people would know each other for the most part & you would just end up with these great big free form Jams going on. I know, I myself met such a HUGE cross-section of Musicians of all types. It was BEAUTIFUL ... I mean just such a special time period for music & artistic creativity. So, that is how you ended up with guys like Dickie who drew experience from playing with all of these different style of players. Taking a piece here, a piece there & then mixing it all together as to come up with his own style. his own signature sound. Which is like the hardest thing to do when you are a guitar player. NOT to sound like every other guitar player out there. You have to develop something that SCREAMS "You" ... So that people can recognize who it is they are listening to within the 1st 2 or 3 bars of the music. And Dickie has that.

skynrdpikr I feel ya on that! My favorite situations are campfire jams. Nah, you don't need a campfire- tiki torches, chimineas, or even a dimly-lit back porch are great places to congregate around. Living rooms will do nicely for the bracingly cold months, that-for-a-that. And fireplaces are definitely a plus, right? Then, you get anyone who plays a guitar, especially if someone is packin' a twelve-string or an acoustic bass guitar! Banjos, mandolins, harmonicas, and other such implements are also welcome. Bongos, tambourines, and auxiliary percussion, ditto. And then...well, whatever you wanna jam on is great! Not exactly open mic, of course, but cozy and intimate just the same. And while the odd electric player with a portable amp shouldn't be turned away, it offers up a truly old-school approach to collaborating with friends, not to mention strangers who soon become fast friends! The spirit you refer to is still alive, skynrdpikr, though I'm sure you're the choir I'm preachin' to [wink, wink]. Once you find kindred souls who enjoy the same pursuits, it shows itself! and should our paths ever cross< and guitars are present, I'll jam with you. Peace, my friend (and kindred spirit, I should imagine).

He has been so, not under-rated that’s the wrong word, but under acknowledged. Duane was wonderful but Dicky was around for many years onward he has written the most wonderful melodies he’s a real original

Nice to see Dickey and Son play. Both have a passion. Dickey's melodic sense was made for Duane Allman's guitar work. Duane thought Dickey was a great player, which he is. Wonder what they would have done in a body of work of more than the little time they had. I think Dickey has been looking for that partnership.

Wow ... forgot all about that guy! Yeh, You're right. Though I don't know if he actually got credit for the writing end of it though. From what I understand? He was a studio musician back then. And, I know from my own experience with the music industry? If you're a studio musician just sitting in on a few takes? Chances are you're not going to be credited with squat. You'll be lucky if they even mention your name on the album. Sad but true fact of musical life. Which sucks for Les because Les was/is a great guitar player in his own right. Thanks for pointing that out! Good Point!

I just finished reading Greg Allman's book and in it he mentions that "Jessica" was ALL Dickey Betts.

I think Les Dudek claimed that he essentially co-wrote the song, but in actuality he just added some minor things to the song. The truth probably lies somewhere in between. I've also heard that Chuck Leavell helped with some of the arrangement of the song. At the end of the day, though, it's Dickey's song. When it comes to recording and all that, a band obviously helps shape and guide the final product.

Dickey just can't help himself. He can never "dumb it down". Even in an instructional demo he has to make it sing. There is no other piece of music anything like "Jessica". And none like "Elizabeth Reed". He's in a class by himself, yet totally accessible across all ages and cultures.
