People Who Died - The Jim Carroll Band is a similar vibe. Jim Carroll is a writer/poet who occasionally put his poems to music. The movie, Basketball Diaries, was based on Jim's life.

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Gibby Haynes is the son of actor Jerry Haynes, best known as Dallas-based children's TV host "Mr. Peppermint",
@kendavis80463 жыл бұрын
Daniel, for real. I graduated in 1982 from Trinity University in San Antonio. I knew Gibby, not well, but we ran in the same circles. He was captain of the basketball team in his senior year, and worked for one of the big accounting firms upon graduation. His father, Gibson Haynes II (Gibby was the III) had a long-running Saturday morning TV program here in Dallas/Ft Worth, his character being "Mr. Peppermint."

That is so cool. I always liked this band being born in 90. As a teen in the late 2000s I always went to "strange" rock from the past. If I was not so young I would have loved Woodstock 94 and maybe 99, but the other stuff going on was not what I'm about. My first concert was the original lineup of STP in the summer of 2000 with my older brother.

They came from the hardcore punk scene. I was in the front row of one of their concerts in the late 80's and that was... intense. They had a huge mosh pit in the front of the audience, of course. This song here came later, it always reminded me of Beck

They were something to behold were they not. The craziest most wild shows I’ve ever attended were the buttholes. Especially those early mid eighties shows in the punk clubs.

The Buttholes played the Forum in Vancouver for two nights in January of 1994, on the same bill as Nirvana, it was quite an infamous concert, I wasn't there unfortunately, but Kurt offed himself 3 months later. The next year I saw Courtney Love & Hole at Lollapalooza.

@@visaman I saw the Buttholes at a little state park in Massachusetts the Flaming lips and the Stone Temple pilots opened it was a great show. There was a pond and people were skinny dipping and it was generally a pretty wild day. It was the first and last concert they ever had there.

This song reminds me of rock songs like Jim Carroll Band's People Who Died. I'd call the subgenre "songs about people the singer knows". The main difference is that by the time this song came out, bass and drums were much more prominent in rock music.

Love that you’re checking out Butthole Surfers. I saw them several times in Austin back in the 80-90’s. They were definitely more of a live band than a recording band, and put on insane shows that were almost an attack on all of you senses. They’d incorporate loud music, tons of smoke, strobe lights. They would project film clips all the while, might be forward or backwards, or upside down. I remember clips from Charlie’s Angels, and even a sex change operation. I always loved Gibby’s way with words, how he could turn a phrase, and Paul’s guitar. You have to have an appreciation for the absurd to fully get the Surfers. Pepper was their probably only radio hit, but not their best song. Try Who Was In My Bed Last Night, Cough Syrup, John E Smoke, Eindhoven Chicken Masque, Goofy’s Concern, Sweat Loaf, Something, I Saw An Xray OF A Girl Passing Gas, The Annoying Song.

Saw these guys a couple of times in Ft. Worth in the 80s. Crazy awesome live shows. I was introduced to these shows by my friends one legged neighbor who would jump about with reckless abandon the whole time. We had fun. At both shows was "Mr. Peppermint" in the crowd. He had morning children shows and a humorous outfit, peppermint hat and cane, etc. I was told he was the father of one of the band members, Paul Leary I think. Other tunes from the Butthole Surfers for you. "Moving To Florida", "Barking Dogs", "Cough Syrup", "Jingle Of A Dogs Collar"

1) The album title is a reference to Jimi Hendrix's album Electric Lady Land, 2) Gibby Haynes had a side band called P. Johnny Depp played bass. They were also the band playing at The Viper Room when River Phoenix died, 3) at one time they had 2 drummers and some of their shows used strobe lights which caused some people to have epileptic seizures, 4) my favorite songs are 1) cover of American Woman, 2) 22 Going on 23, 3) I Saw an X-ray of a Woman Passing Gas, 4) Dancing Queen (P), and 5) Creep in The Cellar.

One seriously deranged assault of the senses, this band released some truly psychedelic albums in the eighties! Titles such as 'Rembrandt Pussy Horse', 'Locust Abortion Technician' and 'Hairway To Steven' (geddit), should give you some idea of their sheer perversity, and musical derangement! A truly kaleidoscopic mutation in excelsis, they were a band you needed to see live, and fortunately for me, i did back in '88!

A really good introduction to the Surfers there, Daniel. You may want to check out their cover of Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man," it's also quite accessible. Most their stuff is not. I didn't understand them until I accidentally listened to them on acid, and they became one of my favorite artists after that. They also have a cover, sort of, of Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf" called "Sweat Loaf" that might be an interesting adventure for you.The Surfers are a very challenging band, incredibly creative, absurd, and psychedelic af.

This is one of those songs that pops into your head from time to time and gets stuck there until you have to just sit down and listen to it again. A really fun vibe. And a great intro into beginning to explore the more experimental and avante garde side of alternative rock. I hope you make your way over to Ween and to Akron/Family. They are 2 bands with very different sounds from each other but are bands that are eclectic and experimental musically and lyrically. For example, on their Quebec album Ween goes from songs about Zoloft, and Happy Colored Marbles, to Transdermal Celebration, and The Argus. And they pull off these wildly different musical sounds and journeys effortlessly. And each Akron/Family album is it's own unique vibe and journey. And Ween and Akron/Family are just 2 bands that move to their own beats. You have the Flaming Lips, and Listener. And then there's the solo work of John Frusciante, the guitarist from RHCP, that is itself quite an experience.

Always loved the song, never could tell people though, without saying the words Butthole Surfers, lol. Welcome to the club. "No seriously, it's a really good song.". If you like this kind of kind of kaleidoscope-sounding song, I recommend Kiss Them For Me by Siouxsie and the Banshees. It's a late-in-career song, it's very different like this one from around the same time, and it has a heart wrenching backstory (it's another song about Jayne Mansfield's untimely death, there were several over the years).
