_Mississippi Goddamn, Strange Fruit, Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood..._ any of these are just gold. Well, just about anything Nina Simone sang was gold. 😊

Oh my so glad to hear this, one of my favourites by Nina Simone, one of my biggest regrets was not seeing her in a live performance when I had an opportunity, love the passion.

I like “Ain’t Got No, I Got Life” by Nina Simone. There is a black and white YT video where she sings live and plays the piano. It’s really good.

When I first heard this song in a movie soundtrack, I thought they were singing- "Cinnamon."

Thank you for listening to the long version! I've heard edited versions before and they lose so much of the song's impact. I loved your reaction, too. Great song, great woman. BTW, Reggae artist Peter Tosh also recorded a song called Downpresser Man, which is close to this one in meaning. I guarantee you will love it, especially if you are familiar with the genre. Thanks again and be well

I agree with you that she sang with so much passion. From the tips of her toes to the top of her head she pulled every note out from her gut. There will never be anyone else like her.

The desperation in this music really hits me so deeply. It's like you can feel that you need to do better because there is something out there bigger than all of us, than everything. Call it God, or whatever you want, there's something greater that pulls us all together and we need to do better by eachother and ourselves. That is what this song means to me anyways.

You're on fire these days Daniel :-) Quite an intense and hypnotic listening, right? :-) I always enjoy the piano playing by Nina Simone - probably what I like most about her music. But her singing is of course great as well.

Stark, raw, emotion, power, Gospel. Desperation. Nina was classically trained on piano. Her home is now being restored in Tyron, NC where she was born. She left the US to be free.

So much to say here. First, glad you loved it. This is true soul MUSIC. Like many jazz and soul musicians of the 50s - 70s, they had their pop songs and money-makers like 'Put a Spell On You', and then the music that they really wanted to to do. True of Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole as it was for Nina. This is the music that moved her -- and us. She was a classically trained pianist, and had an amazing and unique sense of timing and sensibility. And lots and lots of anger. She is an adult portion, but hey you are days away from 18. :-) Keep going.... Try "Mississippi Goddam." Or if you ready to be very serious, check out her version of 'Strange Fruit,' but tread carefully on that ground.

I think my parents had some of the best records laying around to get my hands on. Music like this eventually becomes your own. I took piano lessons but could never keep up with Nina. It was fun going around saying I put a spell on you!. A superb artist if I may say so!

Just a long shot, how about "Songs In The Key Of Life" by Stevie Wonder. It's Double album and EP that was released in 1976. Considered his masterpiece. All songs flow together as one and could be described as a loosely based concept album. It is, in fact, Incredible.

Such an epic piece of soul and art - the closest female we have in recent time is Lauryn Hill but she faded off before taking the next leap to reach Nina's level. Great covers by Alice Smith for the HBO show but the best is called "Downpresser Man" by Peter Tosh, Reggae royalty as a solo artist AND more so as one of the 3 original front members of the Wailers with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer. Check it out - way diff vibe but sick. Then of course I mean Peter, Bunny and BOB - forget about it - "Kinky Reggae - Live at the Old Gray Whistle." Pure enlightenment just as Nina is. Love how music ties together like the membrane of human history.

And she is playing that piano. She was classically trained, but there was no room for an African American as a classical concert pianist in the 1950s and 60s.

Nina Simone is recommended listening! 😎 Whoo, after this version, probably even those free of sin start praying 😉 This track has been somewhat resurrected in recent years, getting used for movie soundtracks, commercials and as remix or sample material for other artists.

If you want to hear the quintessential early sixties pop song you really need to listen to 'Be My Baby' by the Ronettes. Thanks to Phil Spector's 'Wall Of Sound' it became a seminal recording that went on to influence many other artists. Try and find one of the 'stereo' versions.

you should listen the documentary Summer of soul on Disney +. Its about a music festival in Harlem in the summer 1969. But the images were never broadcast. There was alot of great music there. Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Sly and the familly Stone, and more. This festival lasted 6 weeks, And no one knows about it.

A Muslim told me a story from their culture or if it was from their holy scripture about a Jew on the run from Mohammed or other Muslims. He tried to hide behind different things but the rock tree etc shouted "Here's the Jew! He's hiding behind me!". That's all I can remember from that story.
