This kinda thing is why I prefer the older versions where Medusa wasn't transformed at all and was just always a scary -hot- monster. There’s an alternate interpretation of this myth, where Athena knew Poseidon would be angered if she didn’t “punish” Medusa, so to protect her from future attempts to assault her, she gave her the power to turn men to stone. Athena, after her death, was so saddened that it just made her a target, that she put her head on her shield to inflict her wrath on men. This is why some women’s abuse shelters have Medusa’s head as an emblem.

For anyone wondering, this is not the original version of the myth, and is fairly recent, having first been written by Ovid in his Metamorphoses. The thing is, Ovid had a tree sized chip on his shoulder after being exiled by Augustus. He had a grudge against authority figures, and maybe Athena/Minerva in particular, as I’m pretty sure he also wrote the version of Arachne where she’s super petty. In earlier myths Medusa was born a gorgon, along with her sisters Stheno and Euryale.

That's what I loved about the lore of Athena, because she was a tactician, she knew everything that she needed to do to put in place her great plan, to gain power over her father and take him on

Good thing to note is that Medusa was only changed into a monster in some versions of the myth. In the earliest depictions of her, she was born a monster

Poor Medusa got a raw deal. She would never know love, and would be remembered as a monster. Though, she is more seen as a tragic victim in later iterations of her story. It makes you wonder why Athena didn’t punish/confront Poseidon. But then again, he’s a sibling of Zeus, he probably had some type of immunity.

Sounds real regretful here, doesn't she? She couldn't just, oh, I don't know, turned her back into a human, restored her beauty, maybe her virginity too as a bonus seeing as how that was such a big thing back then. And maybe, perhaps, gone to Daddy Zeus, tell him what Uncle did to her favorite priestess and get him to punish Poseidon instead.

From an immortal's pov, empowering someone with the ability to turn anyone to stone and see in all directions could be a gift. The gods aren't human after all, they just look human.

I'm convinced that hestia is literally the only good being I Greek mythology. And I also love that Hades the game states that the had that MF strap and it was so dangerous it had to be locked away from *everything* until Zagreus gets his grimy little god fingers on it
