Emmanuel Acho, Joy Taylor, LeSean McCoy and James Jones debate whether Dan Campbell's aggressive game plan cost the Detroit Lions a Super Bowl LVIII trip or not. The Lions blew a 17-point lead and decided not to kick two field goals in their 34-31 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Campbell did everything necessary to lose the game. Not many coaches would have blown a 17 point halftime lead, and the opportunity to go up 17 going into the 4th quarter. This is where Dan Campbell distinguishes himself from other coaches. His stubborn recklessness cost them in Dallas and cost them home field throughout.

We should have won. Yes, he turned the team around and he's just one of the guys and the players love him. But I 100% guarantee you there are a lot of players on that team questioning his decision making skills right now. He killed the momentum by passing up the 1st FG... I am a Lions fan. As a Lions fan this is embarrassing. There’s been nonstop sports talk about how bad our head coach did. It wasn’t a matter of Campbell in an intense chess match who in the end was out coached by Shanahan. In football terms the blunders that were committed by Campbell amounted to him standing before the football world representing us with all eyes on him and he did not know the answer to “2+2.”

@@LM_357 if you think it was best to gamble on 4th down when a field goal could have been attempted (especially considering we hadn’t missed any that game) to increase the lead and tie, your understanding of football is consistent with the Lions 2nd half collapse. The reason why it was best to kick the field goals in both instances was to prevent what happened, from happening. You new fans are casuals whose extent of knowledge about football is what Campbell has shown you…meanwhile, Lions fans like myself have understood the game and what to in different moments of a game long before Campbell became the head coach. So in supporting our Lions, we knowledgeable fans bring that knowledge to our observations of what Campbell does as a head coach and we call the silliness out in real time.

@@LM_357 but he did not catch it, which is why it was a senseless play call to begin with…this was not a “do or die” situation, therefore as a coach especially on the road, Campbell should not have placed his offense in the unnecessary intense situation like he did in that moment. That’s the very reason that no smart coach would have made that call because the risk of the 9ers stopping us as they did, and having momentum AND great field possession at home was too great.

you're fixating on Campbell when it was a team loss . . . missed tackles, dropped passes, fumbles, avoidable penalties all contributed to the situation Campbell had to face and, in that moment, Campbell did what Campbell does: made a b*lls to the walls decision. it's football. thrill of victory or, agony of defeat. he'll be back next year and, so will Ben Carson so, it looks good so far for next season, especially with no major injuries to deal with in the off-season. 🦁

People are acting like the FG was the safer call, the more sure points. A little context: The Lions were 17 and 21 on 4th down conversions this year. That's an 80% success rate. EIGHTY PERCENT. That's HIGHER than the percentage rate of kicking a FG from 47 yards (73.3%). Knowing that, how does Dan Campbel NOT go for the first down? There's a LOT of hindsight going on couched with a lot of "stuff that analytics can't measure," which is bull. It was the right call. Dan trusted his team to make the play, as he should have. Wait, what? It's simple risk & reward. Obviously, time was the 9er's enemy. The smart play when you're up by 14 is to kick the FG. Make it 17 again w/ 7 min left in the 3rd. Same as halftime. Psychologically, it feels different being down 3 scores instead of 2. After that the 2nd FG gives you the lead with 7 min left in the 3rd (now if you're behind by 3, you definitely should tie it up). Psychologically, there's less pressure when you're tied than when you're behind. Then the running play on 3rd & goal was sheer idiocy. If you're going to run, you may as well do it on 4th down when if you don't make it you lose anyway.

Dan Campbell is the main reason we made it to the NFC Championship game. He only took the field goal before the half and stretched the lead to 17 points, but it obviously left a bad taste in his mouth. Neglecting a FG halfway through the 3rd quarter to stretch it to 17 again was a boneheaded decision. After the turnover on downs, the 49ers marched down the field and cut the lead to just 7. The 4th quarter neglected FG would have tied it up at 27. Instead, they marched down the field and we were down by 10. Stupidity cost us the game. And the 49ers played an excellent game after we started handing it to them on a silver platter. Will we make it next year or the year after? We have a young roster, with a very good quarterback. Not all hope is lost. We just need to learn from our mistakes.

One hundred percent cost them the game. It's like getting a 19 in Blackjack and before even thinking about it, just screaming "HIT ME MF". When you are up, you always take the FGs. You consider it when you are down, but when you're leading, with more than 2 TDs??? You take them.

@@bpusef It's a 19 because they have the lead. The odds to win the game are in your favor. You take those at the 40-50 yards when you have the LEAD to build your lead even further. It makes the opponent adjust their schemes when the lead is bigger aka quicker plays, longer passes, etc. It's only a 17 if you are trailing or tied, and you're thinking of settling for the points.

@@Supafly101 The game ended in a 3pt game, and they passed up on 2 FGs. They would've won the game by 3 (theoretically) if both FGs were converted, regardless of the fumbles and drops. I get that Campbell has a very aggressive coaching style, well reflected in the season, but you adjust it a bit in the playoffs. Love the story of the Lions suffering for the last 50+ years before finally tasting playoff success because it is exactly what we Chiefs fans have been through before Mahomes came. But to lose in that way is just not right. Good luck winning your division again next season when Vikings retool and Jordan Love elevates his game even more

As a 49ers fan, Joy nailed it - the biggest mistake the Lions made in the game: NOT going for it on 4th Down right BEFORE halftime. I breathed a big sigh of relief when they kicked the field goal because I knew had they scored a touchdown there, the game was over - no way the 49ers come back from 21 points down!

Oh man. Totally blown away to hear JJ about the Lions staff. I've asked the same question several times over the past few seasons. Does anyone on the staff ever question what's going on? or is it an unspoken rule that you just sit there with your mouth shut and watch the ship sink? I really don't know; haven't played football since HS. You could ask the same question about BAL against KC. Was Harbaugh totally down with that lousy game plan? Lamar sitting in the pocket, not using his legs, and throwing 37 times? Was there anyone on the BAL staff looking around asking WTH are we thinking?? JJ's points are huge. Can't believe nobody tried to get in DC's ear (or Harbaugh's) and talk sense to him. Or maybe they did and he blew them off. IDK.

Not like the lead was leapfrogging competitively. 3:04 a new coach can be treated like a backup qb who gets hot until they get tape on your idiosyncrasies. The aggressive play calling was a strength and a weakness in the playoffs. I still don't put all that on the coaches. My ❤️ goes out to lions fans

The drop Int and then you immediately fumble is what cost them. He certainly deserve some blame. Should have kick the field goal when you lose the momentum to try to calm things down. The Lions were the young bucks in this championship series. It wasn't Dan's fault that Gibbs fumbled or that receivers dropped passes, but he has to save them from themselves. They were young and they panicked. All he had to do was match score for score, and that first field goal did that. He didn't need to slug anymore; they did that the first half. He just needed to play chess the second half and manage the finish.

My copy pasta from the Athletic - h/t to Mike Sando Before Sunday, the Lions had gone for it an NFL-high 23 times on fourth down with 2-3 yards to go over the last two seasons (including playoffs). They had converted 70 percent of the time (16 of 23), well above the 52 percent average for the rest of the league. AND The Lions signed Badgley off the practice squad in December after waiving previous kicker Riley Patterson. They didn’t ask Badgley to attempt a kick longer than 41 yards in the final four games of the regular season. He made a 54-yarder in the wild-card game against the Rams (indoors) but entered Sunday 13 of 24 in his career (including playoffs) from 45 to 50 yards, including 8 of 16 outdoors.
