@4:13 - Actually we have impressions of t.rex skin and it's close relatives within the tyrannosauridae family. The prints are small and fragmental though, so they do not paint the whole picture of the pattern and size diversity of the actual scales, but we do have them. They also fall within the size range of scales that is shown on hadrosaurs and a carnotaurus (these two preserved a lot more material to show a pattern). There was also a Tarbosaurus mummy discovered a long time ago, but it got destroyed by poachers and we only have a fragment from its throat area. But according to Dr Thomas Carr, the picture can be found in the book in Natural History Museum of Paris and from his observation it showed extensive coverage of scales, with zero sign of feathers. The book is "Mongolian Dinosaurs and Mammals guide", if I am not mistaken. But I havent seent eh photo, therefore no idea how well the photo is done. What we unfortunately lack is more specimens of a more extensive cover of tyrannosaurid skin to work out whether or not it followed a similar pattern and layout as the carnotaurus. And the lack of any papers or testing on the specimens does not help either, but I'm sure it will come in due time, considering how hot this subject is. Regarding the possibility of feathers in t.rex and closest relatives, there is no evidence hinting on feathers at all. While it is a very common pet hypothesis that due to proceratosaurids being their cousin/sister clade (that includes yutyannus by the way) and trying to apply phylogenetic bracketing method to them, their relationship wasn't exactly ancestral, more like two parallel groups within one clade that simply lived at different times. Overall, due to complete lack of evidence of feathers in tyrannosaurids and so far only presence of scales, the burden of proof still lies on the feathered theory, not the other way around. Unless further evidence can reveal otherwise. In other words: "t.rex (and alike) had feathers" = hypothesis, but =/= fact. And science works with data and fossil evidence, which can be tested, analysed, observations replicated and so on. But not with pet hypothesis or speculations (not to say that you are not welcome to have one obviously, its just to make it clear!). Don't forget that not all filmanets are feathers. Many filamentous structures are commonly mistaken for "feathers", while in many cases they do not represent a common trait, but more a secondarily developed integument, or a variation of highly modified scales.

As much as I wish the raptors had feathers in JP/JW, the distinction has already been made by the people in the movie that they're not genetically exact velociraptors, like every other species in the movie, they're imperfectly cloned, and at times genetically engineered. Of course this is a retcon since in the original they were just made that way to look more scary. They're also bigger than real velociraptors were.
@connorshea90859 жыл бұрын
+skykid I like the idea that the people at Jurassic World knew exactly what they were doing and wanted to make velociraptors that looked like how people thought they would look.
@OkamiG159 жыл бұрын
Amphibian DNA. They used it to "fill in the gaps," and it's not a stretch that they filled the gaps responsible for feather production. After all, they did accidentally insert the genes for sex reassignment, so it probably wasn't perfect science back then (in universe of course).
@TJ523599 жыл бұрын
+skykid to be fair around the time the first Jurassic Park film came out, they discovered a Raptor sub species, the UtahRaptor, (wonder where they found it?) that matched up size, and 'weaponry' with the film's Raptors, so they were correct by accident.as noted World, threw in the line about designing them to match public expectations, rather than accuracy, which is mostly cover for the explosion of Dino-knowledge that came out between the Book and the present.
@iota-099 жыл бұрын

The reason why the Jurassic Park dinosaurs called a VelociRaptor instead of a Deinonychus which is what it's supposed to be, is because at the Time Michael Crichton was writing Jurassic Park deinonychus was newly discovered and classified as a velociraptor deinonychus when Jurassic Park the movie came out it was too late to change the name and deinonychus had become its own species which is how it's classified today. Plus they had foreign animals DNA integrated which could have completely unknown effects like them breeding.
@pigeonlarvamagoo85729 жыл бұрын
IS scishow not going to explain how the real velociraptor was like the size of a chicken to midsize dog and Spielberg named Deinonychus velociraptor because the name is scarier, and that the scientific community basically bitched out and let him rename it?

The Velociraptor that is depicted in the Jurassic Park franchise is actually a Utahraptor (minus the feathers). Velociraptor was about the size of a medium-sized dog, about waist height.

They just happen to know the colours of two birds. I'm sure they have more fossils with feathers that they don't know what colour they were… Sounds that way to me at least..
@docterfantazmo9 жыл бұрын
The only problem with micro-structures (such as those that determine colour) is that they're extremely susceptible to taphonomic processes so although the colours are still likely to be those mentioned here, it isn't a sure thing... which is kinda true for most things fossil related I suppose. The stuff I've studied suggests proto-feathers (such as dino-fuzz) were likely used to enable theropods to warm up quicker during the early hours of the morning and to stay warm later at night, given them an advantage over their prey/predators, not to say they weren't used for others things of course.

Just not T. rex or Velociraptor, which are everyone's favorites thanks to Jurassic Park.. Jurassic Park just has a habbit of picking the ones that end up being fluffy for some reason. Compsognathus was fluffy, Pteranodon was fluffy, even the Gallimimus was fluffy, just about the only JP carnivores that we've yet to find any evidence for fluff on are Dilophosaurus and Spinosaurus.. Which we all know by now are both still completely inaccurate in those films..

they way I finally got it through my head about them having feathers is sometimes its hard to tell what is feathers or not. Penguins are actually covered in feathers but few would guess it but they cant fly. Trex did not fly but the chicks may have started out with fuzz feathers. The velociraptors could have glided without actually flying around similar to modern roadrunner. Note that with birds today with their feathers? they dont care if its 20 below zero or 100 degrees. I think humans would be better off if we had feathers. gets cold or hot? we die on the spot if we were naked.

All theropods (carnivores) had feathers, and on their feet they did not only have scales, but also naked skin like on ostriches. Herbivores were all scaly. Although i do not mean lizards, i mean cows that are not mammals... There is an exception, for ornithomimids and omnivores, yes they had feathers. IN CONCLUSION, whatever walks on 2 legs (ONLY) has feathers on its forelimbs. (Except of the Suchomimus and Spinosaurus family)

Why does 2-5cm big spikes with smaller spikes on em somehow = Fluffy hell poodles? Also i really dont like it when people still imply that all Tyrannosaurus had feathers if we still have not found imprints in the minerals/sediment/rocks around the fossils (which are all quite rare and geographically limited to east Africa and South & East Asia).

Would probably have helped Jurassic Park if they hadn't used Deinonychus for their velociraptors.

I must have a Tshirt with a picture of a feathered raptor and the legend "Fluffy Hell-Poodles". Somebody make that shirt!

Scishow, I think the image that you show at 1:20 is not of archaeopteryx but of Microraptor.

For the records i wanted to tell, the first bird in Late Mesozoic Era was Aurornis xui not Archaeopteryx. Btw "the first bird" is thought to be Protoaves (first bird) in Triassic Era. Even the theropods are not evolved yet! Yeah i know, it's mind blowing. Good video tho.

Can we just point out that there are no Velociraptors in Jurassic Park? The Raptors are modelled after Dienonychus.
