3:26 actually there were a lot of dinosaur giraffes. For example Brachiosaurus Argentinosaurs and so much more! Also the extinct animals we think of and think of as animals chordates/vertebrates fish amphibians reptiles and mammals make up a tiny fraction of species that existed. Probably alot less than 1%. Half or more of the ones that were there were fish. The vast majority of extinct species are insects. Not animals youd think of like dinosaurs ancient mammals ancient amphibians or even prehistoric fish. So those animals didnt exactly have the insane uncomprehendable amount of species this video makes you think and those animals could probably all be put in categories easy to comprehend. But there would still be a lot of species. Also there is hope because humans could find a way to bring em back. And you can also see em in heaven.

Paleontologist here, since I was a child I have always been fascinated by dinosaurs, all the books I read, toys I bought, documentaries I watched, etc. EVERYTHING was related to dinosaurs. It seemed incredible to me that millions of years ago such creatures existed. Since that age I knew that my passion was paleontology, I never was a model student, I spent 2 years in a career that I did not like because I could not enter the biology degree, I repeated the university entrance exam and after 7 years since after finishing school, I was able to graduate as a biologist and ended up being a paleontologist. From the books I read as a child with lanky dinosaurs looking like giant lizards until I first collaborated in the excavation of a dinosaur many years have passed, I try my best every day trying to find out how these magnificent creatures looked like. Great video as always, greetings!

Not that I am saying the biology major is wrong, they just need to phrase what they said a bit better. Humans and whales are more closely related than something like tyrannosaurus and triceratops are.

Another point to make is dinosaurs seemingly have to be “cool” and “badass”. People for some reason seem to shrug these prehistoric creatures off if they are portrayed to be feathered, colorful, and realistic. I don't even get what about having feathers and colors make them less cool. I've never gotten the argument. For one, dinosaurs aren't fiction or made up. They really existed. So you can't just be a designer and DECIDE how they looked based on how much you like it. For two, having feathers doesn't make them look less cool?? I think it actually makes them look COOLER. The intricate designs and interesting mechanisms you get from feathers can't be replicated by flat skin with scales. Have you seen birds of paradise? If they were the size of a t-rex and frilled their feathers, you'd be WAY more scared of them than any rex.
@ballislife99243 жыл бұрын

@RainCheck "We are currently in the biggest mass extinction event" Wrong. 1st: Ordovician Silurian "There are approximately 445 Ma, at the limit between the Ordovician and the Silurian, a mass extinction occurs, probably following a great glaciation which would have recorded climatic and ecological disorders making difficult the adaptation of species and ecosystems to the retreat of the sea for hundreds of kilometers, then on its return at the end of the glacial phase. It results in the disappearance of 27% of families and 57% of genera of marine animals11,12, and an estimate of 85% at the species level." 2nd: Carboniferous Devonian Between 380 and 360 million years ago, the Devonian extinction, which includes several phases of extinction, eliminated 19% of families and 35 to 50% of genera of marine animals11 and an estimate of 75% at the species level 14. Repeated and significant variations in sea level and climate, as well as the appearance of significant vegetation cover on the continents, could be the cause of ocean anoxia and major biological crises. The causes of these changes are still debated. 3rd:Permian-Triassic Between 252 and 245 Ma ago, the Permian-Triassic extinction was the most massive. Almost 95% of marine life disappears as well as 70% of land species (plants, animals). This extinction was preceded by two smaller events, the extinction of Olson (−273 Ma) and that of the Capitanian (in) (−260 Ma) 4: Jurassic Triassic 201 Ma ago, the Triassic-Jurassic extinction marked the disappearance of 75% of marine species, and 35% of animal families, including most of the diapsids and the last of the large amphibians. 5th: Cretaceous Paleocene 66 Ma ago, the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction killed 50% of species, including non-avian dinosaurs. We are not living through a mass extinction nor the "biggest" "In 2007, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature estimated that one in eight bird species, one in four mammals and one in three amphibians" It does 20% we are far faaaaar away from the 80%(or even 50), so don't worry we are not living through the "biggest mass extinction event". I'm not denying a lot of species are dying out there that shouldn't tho and it is a problem.

This got me weirdly emotional, when I was a kid I was a massive fan of dinosaurs and even wanted to be an archeologist at some point, I was incredibly interested in dinosaurs and when I discovered that what I knew about dinosaurs was almost entirely wrong (for example, the fact that they're more like birds than lizards) sparked my curiosity again when I got older, and this video made me feel like a kid again, imagining how amazing dinosaurs must've been and seeing them first hand is a thought that makes me really happy and nostalgic, amazing video as always.

You're joking, but the coloration is entirely artistic license to make a nice looking video. Think about it; why would either predator or prey develop coloration that works against them being able to survive and breed longer? Birds that are extremely colorful usually live in environments that suit their coloration and have an advantage of being able to quickly flee by flying away. Exotic bird coloration also is usually more prominent in males, where the range of genetic variation is greater in almost all species. That coloration is also frequently used as distraction away from females that have eggs or hatchlings just as much as in mating rituals. Most mammals, reptiles, insects, and slower birds are earth or plant toned or at least suited to their environment/role in the food chain. Even the idea that dinosaurs had feathers is based on the presumption that the marks of soft tissue are the same as modern birds; they could just as easily have been quills like in a porcupine or some chitinous formations like in insects or keratin like hair and nails in mammals. Taking this video to its own conclusions of randomly adding more soft tissue because animals have it now would lead to thinking an animal like a tiger had huge wing flaps like flying squirrels and that they glided down from trees to get prey. They use an example of of making a sea lion look like a four legged land animal, but it can just as easily go the other direction.

@Horamberg I'd say they mostly died out due to a big cataclysm and reduced in size thanks to ever lowering oxygen levels in the atmosphere. We have reptiles and birds as the survivors, though.
@poopsmith68533 жыл бұрын
@Horamberg no, i didn't say evolution only produces better results. It's a result of environmental pressure. It's far more likely mass extinctions occurred because of cyclical imbalance in carbon levels causing plant explosions which put so much oxygen in the air fires last longer and burn wider. Volcanic activity was higher then and until humans started deforesting wide swaths of land, most forests were on fire yearly. You should learn to use the correct form of they are before trying to drop knowledge.

How about all the species that are still living today? Or all the species that may come? As they said, this is life, this is the beauty of life, the endless(?) Cycle of daying and life re-emerging . Its not sad, that's how it exactly should be. And with our (humans) god like powers as a collective we can do so much more. And how can we? With education, and expending our knowledge, and sharing it with the entire human species. With the will to be good gods, the kind that would role this universe (or perhaps multi) with intelligence and kindness. So go ahead and learn something, then teach it to someone else. And the most important thing to learn and remember, is that humanity is kind and good from there basic genetics. Take an example from the guys who made this video .

“How intensely amazing these creatures must have been. And what a loss to us that we don’t get to experience them first hand. What an even greater loss that there is so much we will never know about them, and even more tragic, all the absurd and beautiful beings that disappeared without a trace.” This brought tears to my eyes. It hurts quite a bit to think that we will never get to see these stunning creatures ourselves. They are truly magnificent, and I hope that from this we can learn that we need to persevere the creatures that currently live on this earth, and treat them with the same respect and fragility as the dinosaurs.

Every single one of those mass extinctions are the very condition by which human existence has been made possible. The same way that every single one of the decisions you made in your life brought you to this instant, the appearance and disappearance of past species made it possible for us to exist in the first place. There would have been no such thing as a human if the dinosaurs hadn't died out for instance. All that being said, I completely share your sentiment; I still get upset every time I think about the Library of Alexandria!
@joweebird19933 жыл бұрын
@@ICreatedU1 this is not necessarily true. People always assume what happened is the only route to the destination. There may be things that can be changed that will still produce the same result. No not every single one of those mass extinction is the reason for humanity, some may be some may not, not all. Your claim that if dinosaurs still existed there would be no humanity is utterly baseless and is a mere conjecture.
@ICreatedU13 жыл бұрын
@@joweebird1993 "Your claim that if dinosaurs still existed there would be no humanity is utterly baseless and is a mere conjecture." The only reason mammals and ultimately hominids managed to become the number one form of life on this earth is precisely because they could fill ecological niches left empty by the disappearance of dinosaurs. From a Reuters science article: "With dinosaurs no longer eating them, mammals made quick evolutionary strides, assuming new forms and lifestyles and taking over ecological niches vacated by extinct competitors. Within 700,000 years of the mass extinction, their body mass had become 100 times bigger than the mammals living immediately after the mass extinction. “*Were it not for the asteroid, humans would never have evolved*,” said Ian Miller, curator of paleobotany and director of earth and space sciences at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science." "No not every single one of those mass extinction is the reason for humanity, some may be some may not, not all." Again, I beg to differ. Mass extinction are events of such major consequences and on such scale that there is a "before" and "after". Moreover, mass extinctions are a powerful engine of evolution which often kick start a heightened diversification rate of life to such an extent that the "after" is substantially different from what came before e.g aerobic vs anaerobic, mammals vs reptiles etc. From wikipedia: "Mass extinctions have sometimes accelerated the evolution of life on Earth. When dominance of particular ecological niches passes from one group of organisms to another, it is rarely because the newly dominant group is "superior" to the old but usually because an extinction event eliminates the old, dominant group and makes way for the new one, a process known as adaptive radiation. For example, mammaliformes ("almost mammals") and then *mammals existed throughout the reign of the dinosaurs, but could not compete in the large terrestrial vertebrate niches which dinosaurs monopolized. The end-Cretaceous mass extinction removed the non-avian dinosaurs and made it possible for mammals to expand into the large terrestrial vertebrate niches. The dinosaurs themselves had been beneficiaries of a previous mass extinction, the end-Triassic, which eliminated most of their chief rivals, the crurotarsans*." From the University of Berkeley: "Mass extinctions, like the one that killed the non-bird dinosaurs, leave behind a host of empty niches - unoccupied ecological real estate. [...] As lineages invade different niches and become isolated from one another, they split, regenerating some of the diversity that was wiped out by the mass extinction. *The upshot of all these processes is that mass extinctions tend to be followed by periods of rapid diversification and adaptive radiation. Of course, the best known example of this occurred 65 million years ago when mammals began to diversify into the niches formerly occupied by dinosaurs*." "a short burst of origination events follows each mass extinction [...] This is consistent with the idea that surviving taxa rapidly diversify into niches left vacant after a mass extinction. Once the burst of origination is over, diversification rates return to a lower level until the next post-mass-extinction period."

When I was a small child 50 years ago, the idea that dinosaurs had feathers or that we could work out what colour they were would have been fantastical and implausible. I would never say never about what we can find out about the past or about the world in general. I remember decades ago when artists first started rendering "colorful" dinosaurs. Books and magazines that featured such depictions usually had a note by them, cautioning the reader that the rendition was "speculative" and that "nobody knows what dinosaurs really looked like." This always struck me as odd, because I grew up as a child with green, brown, and sometimes steely-blue dinosaurs in my books, but nobody ever cautioned at that time that those depictions were likewise "speculative", they were merely "conventional" and had become accepted over time for no particularly good reason except that modern reptiles are the same colors (while ignoring modern reptiles that are strikingly colored and patterned). Such is the conservatism of science, which is not always based on knowledge, but upon what is acceptable at any given time.
