I've never heard about this train story, but I've heard about their meeting in Bayereuth. Victor Hugo called Don Pedro as a modern Marcus Aurelius. In Bayereuth Nietzsche could be convinced of this personally. Pedro ruled Brazil in a very intelligent way: he handled, and manipulated certain factions, while he supported education, science and culture. He himself was also a scholar, thus he embodied Nietzsche's scholar-general and also the renaissance prince.

One thing that raises suspicions about the authenticity of the story is the detail about Don Pedro speaking with an exotic, foreign accent. Yes, he was Brazilian, but he had an austrian mother, and since Nietzsche was German, we can assume that both of them, if they were to meet in real life, would be talking to each other in German. D. Pedro most likely had a native accent in German due to his Austrian mother, and Nietzsche would most likely assume that he was Austrian.
@emiyayuu47462 ай бұрын
There is only one problem with this theory, Dom Pedro II's mother died 1 year after his birth, and his father left Brazil due to popular pressure 5 years after his wife death, records show that Pedro 2 was self-taught in certain topics So he certainly wouldn't have a native accent, at least that's what connecting some points of his biography points to

I think this sort of story is particularly seducive to Nietzscheans because of the parallel it has to Diogenes and Alexander, and the allusion to Diogenes Nietzsche employs in his parable of the madman.

Not to be a nerd but all the commonwealth countries were monarchies, some still are. There were tons of monarchies pre conquest, the empire of Haiti, Mexico, etc. etc.

The statement at 0:13, "...[The Empire of Brazil,] the only monarchy that has existed in the new world...", is false. If we do not include territories considered to be owned by European monarchs, then there are at least two other examples: The Mexican Empire and the Empire of Haiti. There is a Wiki page for each of these empires, so anyone who is interested in learning more may start there if no other source comes to mind. Edit: Changed the timestamp to be more accurate.

@untimelyreflections2 ай бұрын
“Truth should serve life” is a distortion of Nietzsche’s approach to truth. Instead, he writes that the strength of a soul could be measured by how much truth one could tolerate without having to have it muffled, sweetened, or falsified. Nietzsche does indeed raise the issue that what is true might be harmful in the highest degree, but this doesn’t come with an exhortation to deceive ourselves. He writes, “If you wish to strive for happiness and peace of the soul, believe. If you wish to be a disciple of truth, then inquire.”

The British and Spanish crowns having colonies is not the same as a New World Monarchy. Brazil is the only country (1) to have the royalty of a country (Portugal) create a new dynasty that then separates as a new monarchy from the old world (2) that then lasts more than a couple years. If you read Citizen Emperor, a book on Pedro II, the author advanced this same argument. A dictatorship in Haiti or Mexico that called itself a “monarchy” and died in eighteen months is not a good counterexample
