Welcome to the ONE HUNDREDTH EPISODE of The Nietzsche Podcast. Today we're examining the speech of Peter Sloterdijk, given on the centennial of Nietzsche's death, and transcribed into the essay entitled, "Nietzsche Apostle". Sloterdijk puts forward the theory that languages are fundamentally an instrument of 'group narcissism' by which the group recognizes one another and celebrates themselves. However, with the Reversal effected by St. Paul, the function of language becomes self-lowering rather than self-celebrating. Nietzsche's radical use of language is to reclaim the prideful and self-celebratory use of language, and provide us with a 'Fifth Gospel'.

Peter Sloterdijk was the philosophical guide and tutor of my youth. His literary reviews and "The Philosophical Quartet", a show on german state television he used to host, were formative. Only in hindsight do I realize the immense privilege of having a public figure like that. I'm afraid he represents a Germany I'm not sure still exists.

Congratulations on your 100th episode! I've been loving your channel, even though I confess I often fall asleep while listening but I do make an effort to catch up on what I miss. I'm one of those who got hooked on Nietzsche in my youth. I loved that mentioning him raised the eyebrows of the few adults in my life who knew anything of him, and the warning from a priest that he was dangerous only made me more eager to get stuck in. Anyway, he never stops giving and in the right mood, I still get a thrill out of immersing myself in that wild language, "that dark enchanter," as Joyce called him. It's been a pleasure to encounter someone more dedicated than myself (not hard!), and to hear your thoughts. Best Wishes from Ireland, Lew

19:15-19:31 this part made me go “another f***king banger dude“ to myself. 90s kids were prideful too, and in my childhood (im 1996) i watched tv-adapted works (chinese, greek) set in those ancient days where the language of pride was prevalent. And it really was infectious. I had to be humbled a lot to fit into this modern era

It makes me glad i did not pursue my rock and roll fantasies. I think you should reach out to Varg Vikernes and have a philosophy discussion. Ive been a fan of Vargs repetitive style of music for years. Also read his post prison books on European paganism. You and him both have a same ancestral heritage. Just a suggestion. Rock on bro🤘

The Dawn of Everything (Graeber/Wengrow) sheds a whole lot of light on the themes of group power dynamics, resentment, etc, illustrating with ample anthropological evidence and antidote. This "human condition" seems to be age old and ever present stretching back into Paleolithic times. (Even chimpanzees resent and punish freeloading members of the group,) This phenomenon predates complex language, Complex language is more an exasperater than an instigator, perhaps? I recommend this book to anyone wanting to grasp a more socio(pre)historic Birds Eye view on these matters, on the evolutionary origins on this struggle. On a personal note, I have reflected that in my own experience, I feel the emotional "need" to talk myself up as remedy for times when I am rejected or dismissed by others. NOT when I'm being accepted or embraced. I am fully aware that this "self medicating" is exactly what I am up to yet still play out the ritual until self confidence is restored. The most wonderful liberating times are when my ego (self) is contented by my engagement and engrossment in my creative work. By staying active in my work, I'm warding off (distracted from) the pathological narcissistic "need" for validation from myself or others. I am immersed in the joy of my craft. This to me is the key to avoiding BOTH "false humbleness" of the priestly and "false grandeur" of the conspicuous knightly. (My critique posits an equally potent and toxic "knightly ressentiment" )

When it comes to these theories of language, I tend to find Heidegger is the most enlightening, especially for a modern reader. Heidegger too affirmed Nietzsche viewed language as a tool of domination. But Heidegger criticized this idea that language is, as it were, “there standing”, ready for use. Really language always imminently relates to human *being* and his life-world. Which is why it is understood as logos, and fundamentally relates to acts of speaking. Which is why he says language is the house of being.

Great stuff. I've been making this claim that this is what Shakespeare is - a social cohesion project, timed with the King James Bible. We call them the profane and sacred texts of english, respectively. As one of our commenters put it to us, "Language is an army with a dialect." Think I have Nietzsche's quote on doubting Shakespeare's authorship in one of our shorts...think he leaned Baconian.

In regards to the discussion around 1:27:00 it might be interesting to compare Nietzsche with Lao Tzu (whether Lao Tzu is taken as a person or a collection of philosophers). Both see themselves as part of an era in which there is an imposition on reality whereas their desire is to see how things naturally unfold. With Nietzsche he is dealing with post-Christianity/late stage Christianity, Lao Tzu is dealing with the courtly magisterium that has created a divide between the people's continuity thought and the imperial magisterium (in particular justified by Confucius among others). They aren't revolutionaries in the philosophical sense (considering their opponents the revolutionary thinkers), but the desire to get back to a point of natural development and non-imposed ideologies has inspired actions (in particular with Lao Tzu and the Yellow Turban Rebellion). In regard to Christianity, the Pauline inversion is weird for two other reasons. The first is that Jesus is ultimately better interpreted as a libertine figure, the end of the law being the end of the old morality in favor of an era of christ's love. Doesn't mean that there isn't another sense of authoritarianism about Jesus (there definitely is), but it seems that Paul definitely merged the pharisaic morality to bring order and structure to a previously libertine ideology. What makes the Pauline inversion truly bad is that the imposition of shame and discouragement in the Jewish/Canaanite culture was basically always performed by an enemy. In Ugaritic mythology, for example, you have figures like monsters and the god of death trying to impose feelings of shame, fear, and humiliation in order to get gold, sacrificial offerings, or obedience out of other gods. The original Middle-Eastern cultural story of a hero triumphing over death, the contendings of Baal and Mot, has the god of death, Mot, constantly trying to use these tactics in order to get Baal to offer himself or one his brothers up, all with grandiose statements like threatening to devour the masses of the earth. Then you get to Christianity and suddenly the guilt for death is pinned on humanity to induce feelings of shame (and thereby conformity). It effectively becomes that the arbitrary demands of death in the original story become justified by the supposed evils of humanity, quite literally an inversion of the original cultural story of the hero in the region. Would have been interesting to see Nietzsche's thoughts on the cultural context Christianity emerged from, but the texts were only discovered after his death.

I was with you and ready to give my life in service to Your Excellency... till the embarrassment thing. Edited after listening to the whole thing: Never heard of this guy. Brilliant N critique. Brilliant exposition. This gets a relisten. My immediate reflection is to recall my two years of intense N reading as a naive hermit philosopher in the early 1970s. I emerged ready, if not to claim ubermensch status, at least to say yes to life after years of abnegation. Imagine my surprise to find how much I resembled a standard issue mediocre yuppie bohemian. And on a closer look how much N resembled a super brilliant low-grade stoner neurotic --who sure could write.

My 2 cents with regards to "language": language is a shared system that has developed over time commensurate to human perception and interpretation (AKA "intelligence"). A system is a type of tool, used for construction. As with any tool, in the wrong hands, that tool is weaponised in order to attain power over all others (AKA Fear projection), as the weak man does not posses the strength and courage required to attain the power over the Self (AKA Self-mastery over a long period of time).

"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age." - H.P.
