Are you sure his goal tally is right you said he scored 45 goals in 72 games and also had 35 assists that would be world class level

I noticed that too, 172 games, so left out the 1....easy mistake to make. You did get the goal ratio spot on though (goal every 3.8 games). It's far from where he was at Anfield.

I watched Chelsea live LOTS during Torres' time at the Bridge. The main issue was his style of play didn't suit Chelsea's style. Liverpool played exactly to his style. As soon as they won the ball deep. Torres would make a run, the ball would instantly be given to Gerrard who's first thought was feeding Torres. The way Chelsea played was slow build up play, using a striker who could hold the ball up (Drogba). So often when Chelsea won the ball back, Torres would make a run and not get the ball, make another run and not get the ball, make another run and not get the ball, until finally he had to play with his back to goal as the defensive line had dropped, and this didn't suit him at all. He wasn't a flop, but suffered from a huge price tag

Torres' first touch was always average. Having Gerrard in the no 10 role at Liverpool behind him unlocked his scoring potential. Xabi Alonso would pick out a Gerrard drive towards the box, who would either pick out a through ball or pass it down the wings. It enabled Torres to focus mostly on ghosting past defenders. At Chelsea, it was always about setting up goals up for goalscoring midfielders or a Zola type no 10 and a target man up front. Except Hasselbaink & Costa, I don’t think Chelsea have ever had a consistent prolific striker. (Drogba & Anelka had a couple of heavy scoring seasons, but that was it). But Torres was always a big game player. He turned up in the European games. It's not Torres' fault he was wrongly valued at 50 million. Ba was a better fit despite not being very technical gifted and Drogba was still an useful player. As with Crespo & Shevchenko, Ambramovich bought top players just so his biggest rivals couldn’t have them. Heck, Boehley's doing the same thing now with Mudryk

Dumb thing to say when Pre Liverpool Fernando Torres at Atletico literally terrorised La Liga & destroyed Goated FC Barcelona of Ronaldinho, Eto, Iniesta, Xavi, Puyol, Larson, Theigo Motta etc. Watch the matches & you'll know that Torres was very sharp striker. It's just that his injuries & ACL tear made him lose muscle-nerve coordination where he couldn't time his finishing, power etc. At Chelsea he could dribble & make deceptive runs but couldn't time his shoot & ended up shooting here there, else he had same skills. He thereby lost confidence which made him even worse

I really enjoyed this until you compared him to Zola. Zola was never a striker. Zola was Zola and the league was much harder back then, horrible pitches, especially The Bridge, fouls on the pitch were basically assaults back then. Zola is Chelsea 's best ever player. The thought of him if he was playing and brought up in this era is frightening.
@flashbackfootball1367 Жыл бұрын
I don't thin Torres at Chelsea comes close to Zola, not in terms of playing style, impact, legacy or anything. And of course the quality of playing surface etc. is not comparable. I just thought it was interesting how their scoring rates are almost identical, yet people will look at Torres' stats and call him a failure. The point I was, perhaps unsuccessfully, trying to make with that segment is that oftentimes in football, numbers don't tell the whole story.

He was definitely a flop. Even toward the end of his time at Liverpool he looked like he had lost pace and was getting injured a lot. In many ways it was Scheva v2 with him competing with Drogba in that position, getting in his way. He was a good CF in his day but I think he has been overrated. Even he admitted he wasnt as good as Drogba and Drogba himself was actually quite inconsistent.
@14years889 ай бұрын
Not even close. Shevshenko , Lukaku even the man you mention was brought in to replace Torres, Demba Ba - you can call those flops for Chelsea. In fact statistically, Torres had a goal contribution rate only 0.1 below that of Hazard for Chelsea. His GC rate tops all the aforementioned 'flops' & possibly explains why he lasted at the club & played almost 100 more games than each of them. Here's the funny part: I know Zola wasn't a number 9 but he was a forward & Torres has (35) almost the same number of assist as Zola (38) in 140 less games & also boast a higher GC rate. Staggering, considering how revered a legend Zola is at the bridge. The only debate could be that his transfer was overpriced considering that he was on a decline after a series of injuries. That kind of money at that time would be justified if it was for a prime Torres. In conclusion the man saw the darkest period of his career while playing for Chelsea & a terribly slow start didn't help either. Had some very embarrassing and unfortunate moments but even that never really overshadowed his magic. People forget his goals & mostly assists that aided Chelsea reach European finals. He was beast at international level too during his stay at Chelsea, bagging the EURO's + golden boot and Confederations Cup golden boot too. I think while a player at Chelsea he won 3 consecutive European cups starting with the UCL, then winning the EUROs with Spain post season & then winning the Europa with Chelsea the following season. If you check his contributions you will be surprised. He had a couple of hattricks here & there for chelsea, a few magic touches reminiscent of his prime, like that chip over Van Der Sar. I think he's legend even while at Chelsea. One of the few players to appear alongside Messi & Ronaldo as the world's best attackers.

All I remember about Torres is that he had a lot of hype around him and I kept watching hoping to see it and it never came. Over the years I've learned that pundits will hype a player based on the eye test and not the results. If the player looks balanced and elegant they will run with that. I've learned that a lot of players who are slow and not very athletic usually have an elegance to their game but being slow and not very athletic doesn't translate well in every league.

People might say Torres did the right thing by taking World Call but I feel it was his worst decision bcz he ruined his career (he no longer had the immaculate timing & positional sense though he was fit & did same explosive runs & dribbling at Chelsea, Atletico Madrid etc) but he risked his Spain team as they were not much attacking & scoring goals, though they controlled the midfield, defence & goal keeping but attack relied much on David Villa & Iniesta (who was brought as forward). Had Torres not taken the call ,Spain would have chosen other fit strikers. It's just that David Villa was the best finisher in the world then that he bailed out Spain & Spain won else it was tough for Spain in attacks

I went into this with an open mind. Hasn’t won me over. He was a record signing, for the world’s Number One moneybags team. Yet he never became their main striker, within a few weeks and for the rest of his career he was nobody’s pick for one of the club’s top five players, and he never managed to put together a run of more than half a dozen games without either losing form or getting injured. There were mitigating circumstances, but if you look at how much he cost, how good he’d been at Liverpool, and what the expectations were at Chelsea, he was absolutely a flop.
@flashbackfootball1367 Жыл бұрын
Do you think his price tag is the main reason you think he's a flop? Granted, you make some fair points, he didn't hit the heights at Chelsea that he did Liverpool, but given his injuries and declining form before Chelsea bought him, they were mental to pay that price. You can't blame the player for that. I think one of the main expectations was to win the champions league, and they did that with him in the team. I obviously don't class him as a roaring success, but personally still feel the flop label is harsh. Thanks for commenting, and watching with an open mind :)
