At that time people usually wore clothes until they fell apart. So, you had better like what you buy because you're going to have it for a long time. After a while the clothing would take on a "ripe" fragrance. But it was still holding up you kept it. That's where colognes and perfumes came in. They'd be splashed on the body and the clothes to attempt to keep that "ripe" fragrance from permeating everywhere. Many tended to carry fragrant sachets with them and sniff them once in a while especially when around other people.
