Most Rolexes were about $250 to $450 in the early '70s. That's about $1900 to $3400 today. If the market wasn't so hyped, that's what they should really cost, as that's about what they're really worth. But the buyer sets the price, and today's buyers are rabid and insane.

There's some truth in there, but look, how a 70s rolex is build. Sure, their movements were always good, but everything else is trash, even compared to modern day $100 chinese watches. Standards have changes, build quality, tolerances and finishing got lightyears better and that does come with a price.

I've had my share of affordable watches under 1k and others in-between. I can say from experience that the Silent Service is a very, very good watch...regardless of price. I've had mine for a little over a month and have compared it to other watches in my current collection. Its far better than my affordable SK5 GMT, Nodus Contrail, or Venicianaco. It's better than my Seiko SPB143 and SPB383 GMT. Its better than my CW 12 and CW Atoll. Its also better than my Oris Aquis. It matches up favorably with my Tudor BB and even though much different, the finishing, to me, is better than my Cartier Santos. Where it does fall short, but not to a large degree, is my Rolex Batman. But at the price, it gets dang close. I highly recommend the Silent Service, it really is a high quality watch. The price may not be affordable but you do get a lot for the money in my opinion.

Great review, Dave! I became obsessed with Rolex, particularly the Submariner & GMT Master, when I began collecting watches. Knowing that I would never afford them, I owned copies from Parnis/Bliger, Tisell, and San Martin. Those were decent, but I was becoming more drawn to the original watches in my collection. I fell hard for the Silent Service after seeing a preview image on Facebook. I bought mine almost two years ago, and it has scratched the maxi case Submariner itch for me. I love that it's a true homage (except for the bracelet) and not a direct lookalike. It's for that reason that I wasn't into the Ocean Rover (though it's not quite that, either). In fact, I haven't wanted another dive watch since owing it. I was never put off by Ginault's alleged history. I'm interested to see what else they make!

Fantastic review Dave, thank you. I own both the Silent Service and the Ocean Rover V2, and i can say that both are simply fantastic watches. BTW, both run about +2-3 sec/day. I say this being able to compare to high end Swiss Made watches in my collection including 2 Omegas (Seamaster & Speedmaster), a Breitling Superocean, and a Rolex Submariner. For the money, Ginault makes an outstanding watch. Regarding Assembled in America, no issues and i applaud Ginault for doing this and for their transparency. As for all the rumors, i have researched and foundd absolutely nothing that can support that allegation. To me this is a dead mute point. Lastly, i like to note that in my dealings with Ginault, John - the Owner, was always very attentive and professional. Bottom line i received world class service. I have nothing but good things to say about Ginault as a customer and highly recommended the brand.

The brushing looks amazing to me. But perhaps that's because I am in the know. The mid-case has a traditional 5-digit Sub style circular brushing rather than the modern easier to do straight brushing seen on the 6-digit Sub. Ginault did circular brushing just to show off their watchmaking capabilities which I think is great!. The bracelet has straight brushing as always. I have never heard anyone complain about the brushing not matching on a 5-digit Sub 😂 So kinda funny to hear it here. But then beauty is subjective, what looks good to me may not be the case for you.

I've thought about purchasing a Rolex, but with their ridiculous price tag (which far exceeds the annual cost of living increase over the years), I decided against purchasing. I looked at the Ginault years ago when they were selling for around $800 and when you can buy a top of the line microbrand like Zelos for around $500, Ginault simply priced themselves out of the market. Buy a Rolex homage?... sure, but NOT for $1,700 no matter how good the quality is.
@rolexsubcasewearsbettertha95716 ай бұрын
I think before the arrival of Ginault we were all programed to think a homage should be no more than $500 and we all expected inferior quality. No one asked why things has to be that way. We just blindly followed. It was that way bc most homage makers ain't real watchmakers. So when Ginault arrived, they really changed the game with their watchmaking capabilities. It's a great watch considering the quality they are hitting at. Just because it's a homage doesn't mean it needs to be inferior in quality. That thinking style is outdated. And for good quality, it's expected you would need to pay more.

I went through with a purchase of a Ginault Ocean Rover 2. I was treated like royalty. All of my customizations were executed precisely. I even requested a specific timing (+3 seconds per day) and got exactly what I requested. This OR2 has a place of honor in my collection that includes Tudor, Omega, JLC, and Cartier. It’s a fantastic watch that punches WELL above its weight. These folks are a dream to deal with. If the Silent Service is even CLOSE to the Ocean Rover in quality.. it’s a strong buy. Don’t wait.. you won’t be disappointed. Great review Dave and I applaud you for taking it on. Appreciate your review, Dave. One point on your narration: the Elabore-grade Sellita is not the most accurate out of the factory. The most accurate out of the factory is the chronometer-grade movement. Ginault really seems to be leaning heavily into marketing to cover areas where they cut cost corners. That “chronometer” language on the dial is based solely on one’s trust in the people at Ginault. Rolex (and other brands) pay for chronometer certification. Ginault is looking to cut those costs through in-house effort. It’s fine, but for me it’s a turn off.

That's correct, I think Sellita does offer a Top Grade movement, and a COSC grade. That said I do own a few Ginault timepieces for a few years. Contrary to your opinion, I can’t see many details that would differentiate the design of this watch from a Submariner. I would definitely save up for a used Rolex. This is way too expensive for a Rolex copy - or “homage” as you call it. In addition, there seems to be quality issues. The bezel is not aligned with the dial markers, there’s a problem with the finish and I suspect the magnifier is offset. Ginault should have done a bit more effort to fill out that dial completely. I would recommend The Declaration of Independence in its entirety.

Besides the bracelet everything else of this watch is different than a Sub. It's got a different mid-case, a different bezel assembly, different insert, a different dial and indices, different hands, and a different crown. Basically every metal parts that you can't see and feel is different. The fact that you can't see that makes me doubt your ability to discern differences. I own a few different Ginault with Cyclops. @JusttheWatch6 ай бұрын
@@jersaunders3538 Well, that's just how the movement manufacturers work. The Selita movement IS regulated, the elabore grade is regulated to within +/-7 seconds per day out of the factory. Ginault performs an extra 6 weeks of regulation to get that down to +3.8. If Selita were doing that much regulation with all their movements it would drive prices way up, which would only be passed on to us. For reference the Seiko NH35 only promises to be within +/- 45 seconds per day out of the factory. Most of the time it's better than that, but Seiko doesn't regulate that movement to improve accuracy at all, unless they start outside that range, which is one reason the NH35 is so cheap and widely used.

I have owned a lot of Rolex's over the years including two subs. The ginault, which I have also owned was every bit as good as the Rolex's I had owned. The Rolex is more than the sum of its parts and this needs to be understood with in house movememnts that will last a life time. However, now that ginault are transparent about their swiss movements I think they are a wonderful brand and having had experience of both i can say that the ginault, from a wearer point of you, was equal in every way except in cudos and obviously resale value.

I almost feel like all that talent is sort of wasted on a watch that’s trying to look like a Rolex when they could use this amazing talent they have to really make something original and unique. You can get a Rolex like watch just about anywhere. Also, I could be wrong, but I believe Sellita does make a cosc grade movement that is more premium than the elaborate grade.
@rolexsubcasewearsbettertha95716 ай бұрын
Yeah I think Sellita has a TOP grade and a COSC certified grade. I own the Silent Service and I think it's really a great Sub alternative not a homage. I put the watch on the straps and it doesn't look like a Sub at all. Owned the watch for more than a year and it's running around +1spd

“Rolex Alternative”…I don’t know how I feel about that. In one sense nothing is a Rolex alternative because nothing else gets that name on the distal, and it’s all about the brand. In another, any watch that has an even vaguely similar look qualifies, and people will find something that fits whatever budget they have. Nothing is a Rolex alternative, everything is a Rolex alternative. The Ginault is pretty and well made, but the dial text is a bit ridiculous and would put me off. Also, Seiko may have something to say about the use of the term Kinetic. I don’t really get buying a Rolex fan club’s Rolex homage either. I want something with its own identity at that price. Good review!

How does this watch compare to a Steinhart ?
@rolexsubcasewearsbettertha95716 ай бұрын
Ginault's quality is leagues above what Steinhart is doing, there was a comparison video done recently, and many done years ago. Also lots of comparison reviews done on the forums by owners of both. Ginault's quality is close to what Rolex is offering. While steiny is good for the money but it's no where near Ginault or Rolex.

I have the Ocean One Ceramic and I don't see a big difference between it and the Ginault besides the cyclops and the bracelet. I popped my cyclops off, so really it's just the bracelet for me. Hard to justify a 1200$ price difference for just a bracelet, no? Especially when the bracelet is listed at below 300$ on the ginault website.

I own a Ginault. Great watch. Kinda plain jane to a Rolex, but VERY well made. American made despite 2-3 pieces of the watch aren't US made. Never had an issue with it. Their bracelets are awesome, BTW. What I found odd is when Ginault went under legal issues for the "Made in USA" thing when companies like Weiss has been doing the exact thing, who wear "Made in USA."

Nah. They are kinda sus at this price. They didn’t know ‘made in USA’ had rules around it before sticking it on their dial? I’ve read the documents and believe they did in fact produce fakes. Either way: it’s ~$500 off a pre-owned Black Bay. Get that if you want a Submariner alternative
@kylewilliams97106 ай бұрын
They absolutely used to produce fakes. They also knew they were lying about the made in the u.s.a part. Furthermore just because they say the case is made in the states does not mean it is...they used to work with clone factories in China which has also been proven. You can have all parts made in China and still put hand built in usa just like they are still doing😅

I actually don’t understand the ‘controversy’ - wouldn’t going straight be the ultimate outcome/aka the American way 🤔 makes no sense. The homage outrage too makes no sense… this is every bit a true to the sense homage watch. Takes bits and pieces from various models and even maybe multiple brands and puts it together to make the ultimate collectors homage watch. I can attest to their quality and customer service, having made a very minor warranty claim, which was sorted straight away. Happy owner (Ocean Rover ii) here. Great review BTW 👍🙂

Gorgeous watch, however, the integration of the end links with the case is unacceptable at this price point. Also you can see machining marks on the bezel. San Martin and Baltany pull off those two things much better, at a fraction of the price of the Ginault. 🥴👍

@@WH-hi5ew I own a few Rolex watches. All newer models, including Sub-date, no-date, hulk, SD43, Explorer II, YM40 + a 5 digit Sub-date. I own both Ginault OR 2 & Silent Service Traveller. Pound for pound and value to price ratio, Ginault wins. IMO next to the Rolex watches, Ginault is a better looking watch, mainly because of the sword hands. It does look better than the Mercedes hands. I’ve looked at them under my jeweller’s loop and they are finished just as good as any Sport Rolex model. Quality is certainly there. I just don’t wear them as much as the Rolex watches, and it’s only because of my insecurity. It does not say Rolex on the dial. If you would swap the logos, the Ginault looks more proportional and balanced. 2 issues: 1. No logo on the clasp. 2. Power reserve is shy a day or two from the Rolex watches. Other than that, amazing watches. I’ve recommended Ginault to my friend and he just picked one up too a few months ago.

@@EricZ726 I'm the opposite... I brought a 16710 Pepsi and not comfortable wearing it because of the brand despite liking it in the shop. Ginault Ocean Rover 2 date with blue bezel would be the one I'd go for personally... I've seen some owners online complain about the cyclops being cloudy which puts me off. I seem to have gone on a journey - never bonded or held on to Rolex (Pepsi + 36mm Explorer) or Tudor (BB58 Blue) or Omega (vintage Seamaster). I have a Seiko Alpinist + Casio Oceanus which I wear as my daily's. If Ginault sorted the cloudy cyclops out then I'd be happy to wear it.
