@@theurbangentryI can tell you what brought me into it a few years ago. Bought the new Apple Watch Ultra for $900 and thought that was a ridiculous amount to spend on a watch. I started collecting around 2008. As my watchbox has consolidated and individual pieces have grown much more expensive, what hasn't changed is the cheap G-Shock 5610 that I use to set my other watches, to accompany me to the gym, and to wear whenever the neighborhood feels sketchy. It is a true tool. In all honesty, it's the only watch I've ever owned that isn't a piece of jewelry.

I want SO BADLY to love Bulova. I've had about 6, and they never seem to last in my collection. Some of them have died due to failed water resistance, some of them just bored me and got sold, and a few were genuine lookers but didn't exactly match my sensibility. I think they're really *close* to shedding that "mall watch" status, and they've improved tremendously. Still, the MSRPs are high-larious if you consider the value proposition they are offering versus the competition. Asking $400+ for a "military field watch" that has 30m water resistance and a Miyota 8 series movement? Yiikesss. There's a sucker born every minute, and they go to the mall all the time IYKWIM.

What i don't get about tracking steps for older people is, what happens when you don't meet your daily goal? NOTHING. And if you've owned one for awhile, you already know about how many steps you do daily. So why keep tracking them at all? It's not like my dad is going to leave the house at 11pm to go walk the neighborhood just because he didn't meet his daily step goal 😂✌️

I believe that quartz watches will ironically be the only hope for the industry to compete. Modern cheap mechanical watches are more fussy to deal with for the average person. They run out of power in 2 days, they are less accurate, more fragile, more expensive to service, and ultimately just as disposable as quartz if not more, as the movements are often simply discarded and fully replaced. Quartz watches are the least fussy and most accurate, and with solar and atomic/radio options they are even more useful. If big brands produce better and more quartz options, more people will want to buy them. The affordable mechanical fad needs to fade a little and let quartz take over. Imagine how awesome a Prospex solar quartz SKX or Turtle would be.

All it takes is a hand me down to kindle the love for watches, I had watches as a kid, mostly cheap digital Casio's but there was that day I was dressing for a job interview, a part timer while I was at college at this time my Granddad was staying with us for a while, as I was adjusting my tie he spotted my grotty old Casio "You are not wearing that are you?" I hadn't worn a watch in about a year and it was all I had. He promptly went to his room and came out with a very shiny Gold Tissot Seastar Seven that he had had since the late 60s. It felt like the cherry on the cake from feeling average to a million bucks. It even became a talking point during the interview. I often wondered if my first impression would have been damaged, if I wore that old, dirty, cracked screen Casio (F-87w I think) with the strap a few moments away from ripping that I had for about 10 years.

I feel like Bulova are inching ever closer to a perfect everyday watch - that 262kHz movement is their unique selling point, and refining one of their heritage designs with that movement would eat up some of the affordable competition - the new marine star is close, this new super seville as well, just the proportions are ever so slightly off. Once they make a smaller lunar pilot that fits a majority of wrists, they will have a hero piece to anchor future successes from, at least from watch enthusiasts getting the ball rolling. Having said that I'm happy with their miyota powered watches, when they look as nice as the oceanographer, they just need to use more finishing on their steel as all polished tends to look cheaper (at least to my eye). Definitely making improvements on the mall watches they'd been selling - happy you keep us abreast of each new release from them!

I'd add citizen to the list too. I've got Tudor, Tissot, omega but my G-Shock and eco drive get the most wrist time by far.

Totally offtopic question: What is the exact model/manufacturer of Hugo Mountbatten?

The rectangular shape…and the 262Hz movement inside, puts that Bulova on my list!

Bravo! Humorous, entertaining, eminently educational and wonderful tour of the “ Big Apple “ Thanks TVG. Hopefully Bulova will dig into their historical catalogue and bring us something special in the 40 mm range with decent water resistance and that great Precisionist movement..would buy in a heartbeat. Cheers from Nova Scotia..MikeR.

Good evwning TGV! It's great to see Bulova offering a wider range of attractive offerings and not just relying on the Lunar Pilot. Best regards, Heiko

Great video, I have several g-shock watches, including this gbd-200. It was a time when I was wearing smartwatches, but after a while, all the notifications, and indications were annoying. I was slowly disabling all the functions until I realized that I don't need a smartwatch anymore. Casio and citizen are my favorite brands. But casio is starting to follow this connected watch trend, via Bluetooth. You even have to charge your watch with a cable. But to be sure this year I bought the GW 9500 mudman and the GW-5000U square g-shock. I also have the citizen promaster skyhawk blue angels edition. I don't need smartwatches anymore.

I wear my cheap retro Casio watches like socks. You rotate a different pair every time. It's part of fashion and it's really fun. All smart watches do is delete that fun and make friends check useless work emails from their wrist while out at dinner with you.

Brilliant content as always. John. Oh, love the walking in new york.

I absolutely love how Bulova is putting out amazing retro designs, but keeps the price down, yet keeps it interesting, by putting the Precionist movement inside. I think the Precionist should be their hallmark movement! I was so used to Bulova only using the Precionist in the ugliest watches ever, but these new ones are fantastic.

I love watches. I have probably 15 between seiko, Casio and omega but my daily driver for most of the year is my Garmin. At least half the year I am preparing for a marathon and I just enjoy the fact that it goes 20 days on about an hours charge and it generally tells me how to train. Granted I go out to dinner I throw on a real watch but I think there is a difference between the Apple watch that is truly a phone and needs daily charging and my Garmin that I can throw on the charger for an hour and not worry about it for a month. A lot of people say watches are tools and not jewelry but in this case I consider my Garmin a genuine tool to help me achieve an annual goal which allows me to fundraise for a charity I truly care about.

Great to see you back on the block in the N-Y-C. That Gshock is something else and a step in the right direction. As for Bulova, hoping they release their "Royal Oak" model from back in the day and that a mysterious journal turns up for auction from Genta's storage unit. "Pitched my new watch idea to Bulova today they said they'll think about it. Oh well, guess I'll go to AP tomorrow and see what they think."

I refurbished a 1977 Super Seville from the ground up a few years back and is still in my collection today. I also own a Mil Ships and an Oceanographer GMT Devil Diver in blue. I was so excited when I saw the new Super Seville on the Canadian Website. However I am disappointed they did not have a day and date complication like the original and 30 meters of water resistance is making me take a pause. However that sweet 262mhz sweeping hand is just brilliant.

I ordered in a Lunar Pilot last week and am very happy with it. That movement is neat and is the first quartz I’ve bought in many years.

One of my favorite videos of yours, ever. I have NEVER worn a smartwatch and NEVER will. But i just turned 44, and have had a massive watch collection since I was 5 (1985) and watch Data in The Goonies 😂 But I'm really curious what the younger generations think? 🤔

Who built it, and more importantly, how and where do I get one. You are the David Niven of the next generation! Keep up the great work and great videos! Please, please more info on that Super Seville Day Date, !!!!

I absolutely love the Super Seville & I'd like the next Bulova to be as close to the originals as possible. I think parents & the watch community have a duty to pass the hobby down to future generations!
