Goku has NEVER cared about justice and all that until the Moro arc, that is why he seems different in DBS. Until the recent chapter in the Moro arc, Goku never cared about Justice or saving people, he mostly cared about protecting his friends and his family.

I truly believe that they made Goku's character dumber in Super but why this is I believe traces back to Toriyama being a comedy writer (which still baffles me to this day how a comedic writer would come to make the most popular, action packed, and intense anime series.) I think Toriyama is wanting to go back to his roots and is writing Dragonball Super more like the original Dragonball which was way more comedic than DBZ. He does this clearly by making Goku act like his child version than his DBZ teenage and Adult version. Anyone who denies Goku isn't stupider than he was in DBZ is kidding themselves. The amount of stupid things he did in the Trunks arc should be a concrete proof. Forgetting the Mafuba seals really?! I don't even think Kid Goku would have forgotten to do that cause even Kid Goku wouldn't have been that dense when there was innocent lives and the fate of the world at stake.

Its Toei who's writing what they *think* Toriyama would do. Its not Toriyama necessarily because he wrote for the BoG movie and that was where Goku was for the first and only time in the series that he was in character according to Toriyama, not Toei. Toei however has just flanderized Goku because of that gag-humor in DB but they don't know how to balance it out anymore, so they make Goku dumb ALL the time. Goku losing his intimidating factor was something I hadn't really thought about but makes a lot of sense now that you mention it. His appeal in DBZ was always those moments when he was finally there after everyone else had been given a shot at defeating the enemy. Though it did get rather boring in the sense that you could always expect Goku to take the lead and defeat the enemy after everyone failed, it was still great to see. Not so much now tho, but on the other hand, there's also the benefit of actually seeing Goku rise up in order to meet the challenges that face him, like Hit in the latest episode.

Yes, he is a caricature in Super, where he had a real presence felt in DBZ and DB. Even GT did his character much better. As a long time fan of anime, I'm both surprised and not surprised that the opening theme hasn't changed. Anime today, especially longer series, tends to change their theme songs and entire animations seemingly every 12-15 episodes practically (it was that way with Naruto for sure, same with Fairy Tail), and mostly the animations would reflect whats going on in the story to a point. But it didn't used to be like that. Dragon Ball kept the same opening theme throughout it's entire run. Dragon Ball Z only had two theme songs through it's entire run, the first theme, Cha-La Head Cha-La, went from the start of Z through to the end of the Cell Saga. Only the animation slightly changed to reflect Goku being able to go Super Saiyajin. With Dragon Ball Super, I like the fact that there's only the one theme song so far for the opening (and they do change the animations a bit to reflect the story), it harkens back to the good old days of anime. But as for ending themes, what they've had four or five by now I think? I do admit though, as someone that has been watching Dragon Ball in Japanese since 1993, the background music is one of the biggest differences. That goofy, Spanish-horns type of music that DBZ used to have was so iconic and different, and for me it's what made DBZ DBZ. Course, even in DBZ, the entire tone of the music changed after the Cell saga, so its not really all that much of a stretch for the background music to be different in completely different arcs of the story, so if you look at it that way then the music change in DBS isn't that shocking.

They were talking about the actual music in the anime, the English dub with Bruce faulkner had really intense music that fit the tone really well. Super doesn't have that at all. Music makes a massive difference to the ambience and mood of the show, even if you don't notice the music playing it effects your emotions while watching a scene. DBS being comedic, silly and stupid isn't just in those scenes. Even the action scenes have stupid music which doesnt fit the tone.

Justin Omoi Goku actually managed to scramble some non-muscle brains in the series, first showed when he reached the age of 18 and explained tactics to Tien when fighting him in his last young tournament days. In the manga and anime, Goku also gained some heroic priorities by the time of the Cell Saga. He was outright telling Cell he wouldn't fight if he killed more innocent people, and actually brought up the subject AND managed to come up with a plan to resurrect the people killed by Cell himself by getting someone from Namek who could create Dragon balls. It wasn't Gohan or Piccolo that time, it was Goku. DBS and Toei has a very skewed memory of Goku.

I've been watching the original dragon Ball (eng dub), and super Goku is definitely closer to young Goku. while in DBZ he does seem more serious, he's always been a goof at heart. Sure Goku is naive, uneducated, motivated and jolly, but he still used to, USED TO, get serious when needed till the end of Z. The writers did make him dumb in Super. All those things you said that paid off for Goku were pure absolute luck. Goku never expected Fat Buu to become an ally or spat out by Kid Buu. And he originally gambled wrong with Gohan, because ultimately it was only due to Mr. Satan tossing No. 16's head over to him that initiated him to transform into SSJ2. That said, it's obvious the writers of the anime are trying to make Goku a little bit more like Luffy of One Piece.

I totally think gokuu regressed as a character. (by the way this is an awesome and highly thoughtful review). Even though DBGT had kind of the same problems of gokuu being less intimidating by becoming a kid again, the ssj4 transformation kind of made up for it. And especially the mysterious death he had in the ending which made him a legendary god-like character. Unlike the super saiyan god transformation which I think really disappointed us fans. Everytime a new saga came in DBZ we couldn't wait to see the new bad-ass transformations, but in DB Super, all we had was different hair colors and a new ssj-beyond-god that was just a mild change of haircut. Vegeta too, he changed. He is no longer the bad-ass super saiyan we saw in buu saga. He is way less intimidating now. I think it`s Toriyama`s fault. He isn't really an action fighting manga writer but more of a comedy manga writer. So he probably thought the bad-ass gokuu we saw in DBZ was becoming too different from the silly unintimidating friendly gokuu he was familiar with. (there was a different concept for SSJ-God but he changed it to its current form to look `more like gokuu`.) I also saw somewhere that Toriyama likes his strongest main characters to be the small weak looking guys, and the weak ones be like big and intimidating dudes (thus we have the Nappa types). He went out of that in late DBZ sagas, but returned to this model in DB Super unfortunately. The dragonball franchise became a success fighting manga/anime as a fluke actually. It began as a childish comedy manga and because of Toriyama`s wide ranging imagination the franchise almost became a sort of `space opera`, then followed a super-android apocalypse with time travel, and then the concluding buu saga. The franchise became too great for a simple comedy manga writer to keep up the good work. But we fans asked for more, and what he as a writer could have given us was only DB Super, because it`s what he is best at: writing silly comedy!!!

I know this is from 4 years ago but fuck it Except Goku doesn't fight any of those gods, and he's best friends with the strongest one of all. Intimidation isn't based on how powerful you are, Or Whis would be the scariest person in U7. Goku's intimidation factor came from not making him angry. When Goku fought Cell we never felt that intimidation because Goku wasn't angry. Goku rarely gets angry. Goku was intimidating when he fought Frieza because it was the first time we saw some him truly angry besides when KP killed Krillin. He was intimidating when he threatened the supreme kai because it was the first time Goku dared to threaten an innocent, let alone a wise god. The movies are an even better example of this. Cooler emulates Frieza, but also Goku was angry because he threatened his friends and innocent lives on Earth. False Super Saiyan was the first time Goku was in a berserk state.

Putting Gohan against cell was not selfish. Gohan would die if Goku lost since cell would destroy earth. This way Gohan can at least fight before the inevitable conclusion, especially since he was the strongest. The senzu bean part is pretty difficult to digest. However we can say that if Cell at his state found out that Gohan was more powerful than Goku, he might've attempted to go all out and not take chances. By giving the senzu bean Goku made cell more confident to stall time to let Gohan bring his rage out.

No actually it is still selfish. Especially if you consider that it was goku that was against the idea of killing dr gero before the timeskip. He is responsible for cell's perfection by doing so and allowing him to create 17 and 18 for a fight and he knew what dr gero was after him. So he himself made the decission to see it through and then he puts the preassure of the earth randomly on his son gohan. The Dragonball Z series that you so love was a forced collaboration between Toriyama and the editors at Shounen Jump. Toriyama was a contract slave while he was writing Dragonball. The editors were the final say on the tone of the manga, who winds up with the most screen time, and the amount of comedy that was allowed. Without their input, you will end up with something different. For better or worse, Dragonball Super is Toriyama with free reign over his creation.

The impression I have had is that Goku became a lot more mature as a character after he suffered his heartattack. He had died before, but this was the first time it had nothing to do with his own weakness, and it gets him to start thinking about what will happen after he is gone, and what makes him really try to get Gohan to go Super Saiyan, because the Earth will need a protector. One way of putting it is that he has entered into the Knight of Faith stage of life, as described by Soren Kierkegaard- he is living for something other than himself.

Agreed. On a side note: I've not kept up with all of Super but to an extent, could Vegita be the new main character? There has been talk about this from back during the tournament arc but Vegita's character is showing the greated amount of growth as he has gone from being a merciless destroyer of worlds, to creating friendships and rivalries, to learning love and becoming a father. Now he seems to be taking a more serious attitude towards not only training but personal discipline. His very nature seems to be turning/continuing development into the image of the father/king he looked up to and thus is becoming a more balanced and some would maybe say benevolent hero or anti-hero. With the Goku becoming simplified and Vegita continuing his character development, I saw argue he is the main focus of the show despite Goku still being used to fill the role of the good hero that saves the day (which is becoming very tiring).

That's true, and more time in dragonball was spent being light hearted that's why his intelligence is more noticeable. in DBZ remember when he was in hospital after fighting Vegeta? The only real difference in Goku's personality in Z and Super is that Super put a lot more focus character interactions rather than fighting. In Z, it more non-stop fighting which we really only get to see these characters aggressive side. In Super, we see more of these characters off the battlefield so we see the soft side of their personalities. Look at Z's Vegeta vs Supers's Vegeta. He acts more human and emotional in Super because in Z, we rarely see him interact much with his own family and the rest of the cast other than butting heads with Goku. TLDR: Goku seems dumb in Super because we hardly see him interact with anyone when he's not fighting in Z.

I think he was actually smarter than he should in Z, since like you said, he didn't have that much screentime, so when he showed up, it was always to be the one that solved everyone's problems or better said, only to the fights instead of real interaction. There's also the fact that again, despite the existence of Goku representing improvement and to grow as a person, his personality was the same. which is being an idiot in a social perspective. I always look Super as the real sequel of the original Dragon Ball, since Z was on a completely different direction where it was more about action than real interaction between characters, while Super takes what it can from both sides and the result for Goku is being a strong and smart fighter, but socially speaking, he's a complete idiot, as he has ever been. Because everytime he was involved into a real interaction, even on Z he was dumb or selfish or not able to understand social behavior (the last filler episode is the proof of that since he cared more about dinosaurs than having a party with his friends), but again, there was not a lot of actual interaction other than combat back in Z. But just as everyone else, this is just my opinion.

I finally figured out why he is so dumb in super. He got hit in the head so many times while fighting kid buu it basically reverted him back to db season 1 levels of intelligence

What you said about Goku is very true, but I always saw some elements of a selfless hero in Goku throughout Z. Him letting Gohan surpass him and sacrificing himself to save everyone being a prime example.

The Funimation dub didn't nescecarely made Goku smarter, but they still did portray him different from what he actually is. They tried to portray him more as a Superman like character, being heroic and all serious and caring about justice when in reality, he isn't like that. Even the Japanese dub for DBZ sometimes made him to serious. The Goku we see now in Super is the real Goku respectively how Toriyama sees him, a carefree and lighthearted spirit who is a fighting genius but not very smart and interessted outside of it. It's understandable that people who are used to Funimation dub Goku may got confused, but Goku disn't nescecarely get dumber, he is just like he always was and is, at least in Japanese. Another thing that may play a role is that through all of Z he was in a constant state of danger and our seriousness. From the appearance od Raditz to the defeat of Buu, there always was some kind of threat. Super is the first time in decades where Goku can be himself without being constantely worried about something, so his true, carefree nature he had back in DB breaks through. I will admit that they sometimes overdo it for comical purposes, Goku not having kissed Chi Chi once in like 40 years or even knowing what it is really seems a bit of scale, but still, it's not like he is a completely different character. And he also isn't all dumb and carefree, recently he figured out Hits time skipping technique in like 2-3 tries and was able to counter it, this is the Goku we all know and love. I also wouldn't say that he has lost all of his intimitation. He may be less imitating with him being around more than he was in Z and powerhouses comming up left and right, but it's again not like he lost all of his seriousness and intimitation. Remember when he got pissed at Black after finding out his origins? I haven't seen Goku this mad and imitating since he fought Frieza on Namek. Or the Hit fight recently. He still can be imitating if he wants to.

now that im sweeping through you videos i might as well comment on this one too XD lol but yeah i too believe goku being sensed more stupid in super is not just due to 1 thing but a mix of some factors, 1. toriyama wanted to go back a little to the more friendly and comedy aproach for super like the original DB so ends up exagerating and making a bit more noticeable goku's innocence. 2. like you say, him being not intimidating anymore and lacking personal motif for his actions really make that innocent kind of dumb side of him stand out even more, maybe he was like that all along but we coulndt totally notice because there was always a personal motif driving goku to be more bad ass, like revenge on his friends or saving others in need, now he lacks a little bit of that as well. he now fights purely to become stronger or when asked for help or being challenged and the only moment we were allowed to remember goku is not dumb but inocent but badass as well was when zamasu made it personal and he had his rage boost. that and the cherry on the cake, super is badly written and sometimes on the comedy they sacrifice logical sense, so if you put all that on the mix and then do the magical touch of making a scene were goku cant tell a disguise or know what the fuck is a kiss even when he has a wife and 2 kids =voila it makes anyone get the impresion that goku got retarded as hell on super.

Actually In the new episode released goku does some very smart things and surprises even me, he sends a shockwave into the air which resucitates him upon impact after he has died, and he predicts hit's new abilities with great acurracy, he is smart only when he wants to be
