I remember watching a legit simulation drill where they made 3 guys fall asleep till they hit REM and then have the invaders break in. The 3 guys were a civilian 3gun competitor, a deputy, and a formally active marine. Only the marine was able to kick into gear get his gun out and take out the home invaders.

Meaning, if you are one of those people and hear gunshots in your own house that are meant for you, you'll have some kind of reaction. A professional would use things like this to figure out the location of his target. In my opinion, it is smarter to out maneuver rather than sit and wait for them to walk into a trap that could end up with you dying because you think you can be faster on the draw than a guy who might have more experience than you. I served and fought in Afghanistan.

They weren't using real bullets (obviously), and I doubt that the pellets would punch through the doors. So in real life, that's entirely possible, but not in this simulation. On the other hand, if they make everything out of thin paper that blocks all light from passing through (so you can't see shadows cast from the other side of the walls), that would allow the pellets to actually penetrate through stuff.

There is a difference between cover and concealment. The couch was never meant to be cover but it breaks up the immediate response of your brain recognizing a person. it took the "robber" more time to realize there was a person there than the defender did because of this.

i can see a slow door opening, the hollering is odd admittedly but I CAN see keeping movements slow and quiet, even if you got a short window being loud draws more attention quicker and gives you less overall time

Couch was to block the other door and to half is visibility might not stop a bullet but it might stop buddy from seeing you a extra .5 second which in situations like these fractions are what make a difference

He'd only do that if he knew there was someone in there and killing them was his aim (most intruders would rather retreat than risk an engagement if they know). He would also need to know the building layout for it to be worth it. As for defending the home, i get the approach but it's not what I would have done. I think a better approach would have used the long corridor as a fatal funnel, as that gives the defender a vital retreat option rather than backing themselves into a corner in a room with no cover. He had concealment, that is not cover, nothing in that building is cover it's all merely concealment. Should he be engaged were he is, if he fails to take down the intruder or there are multiple, he is now in a kill zone, they can just shoot through the walls/door and he's mincemeat. He however can't return fire safely as 1 he doesn't know the location of the shooter anymore and 2, he doesn't know what's behind them (he has to consider his backstop, neighbours houses/public streets, they do not really). Self defence doesn't work if your "self defence" shots kill/wound an innocent person behind your target (that's manslaughter).

use both couches to block one door from door to opposite side wall. Use tv stand to block other door. Defend weak side door as fatal funnel. Maybe even setup opposite side of room since nearest exit appears to be first door.

The home defender did a great job, but I would not sit behind the door way, drywall and doors are not bullet proof. Should have turned the couches, so they make a full wall to block the door. By using the wall on the opposite side to barricade. He did great at forcing the fatal front. Which was great

For defense this was great. Bad guy doesn't know where you are. You made good use of your time to eliminate one approach and funnel your attacker into a kill zone. You further blockaded the door to give extra time in case bad guy forces way through (definitely still possible) while providing yourself concealment to watch the fatal funnel from. Then wait and make him come to you. Very few bad guys are going to properly pie the corners to have spotted you first especially with you having the advantage of depth of cover.

100% the right move. You can only cover 1 area at a time so eliminating an entry point like this gives you total control over where the aggressor has to go to get to you. Only issue in this instance is a couch isn't very good cover and if you have to retreat for any reason it'll be that much harder now that you've cornered yourself. At least you have the element of surprise though.
