To be honest, knowing now what care needs hamsters have, I think the more insane thing that people let kids take care of them on their own. I'd rather have it be a 25-year-old's first pet for the purposes of learning to research and adhere to the needs of a particular pet. Reasons: 1# They are very prone to biting and their bites are pretty painful for an adult; I don't imagine children are going to like them much better. 2# They are very fragile: Don't feed them for a day and they might literally die, and they are also prone to a lot of diseases. 3# They are very aggressive towards other hamsters. 4# They aren't affectionate towards humans, which is usually the draw of mammals as pets, especially when it comes to children. 5# They live very short lives. This might be the reason people see them as "throwaway pets", but in reality I think the short life-span is actually a detriment if the purpose all along was to teach the child responsibility.
