We started with a Dodge 3500 with a 35’ gooseneck on the farm.... it towed A LOT and frankly with two 7 series JD’s, Bobcat, and hundreds of hay bales to move it was over worked and ate brake pads pretty quick. So we stepped up to a Ram 4500 (crew cab w/ a 9’6” hay bed since it was a cab and chassis truck) and an international 9200i semi truck with a 53’ step deck. And kept the 3500 just for checking cows and moving hay with the hay bed.

@@TractorTimewithTim I've been heavily involved in the ¾ & 1-ton truck segment for 20 years and have always said they're all good (exc. maybe the '03½-10 6.0L Ford Diesels). They all have their pros & cons. Just hope you get one built on a good day. The good thing is other than the government mandates, which have hurt all 3 and especially the Diesels, the competition has made everyone up their game. Today's ½ tons can tow what a one-ton dually could 25 years ago. Unfortunately their prices have gone up tremendously as well and not in proportion to the improvements. The big 3 make a LOT of $ on these trucks because they know that they share a monopoly on the market as the foreign manufacturers have just not been willing to venture into the full-size pickup segment for whatever reason.

Great information. I drove an F-250 and an F-350 as work trucks. They were the exact same package except for the Diesel engine in the 350 and a gasoline engine in the 250. The extra power in the Diesel engine was worth the cost difference as far as towing power. My personal vehicle is an F-150 with the 5.0 engine. It has plenty of power to tow anything that I might need to. My biggest issue now is that I didn't get the trailer brakes when I purchased my trailer. I didn't think far enough in advance and never planned of towing anything heavy enough to require trailer brakes. Thanks for all of your great information!!!

You certainly made the right choice. I bought a 3500 with the diesel in 2017. Since I knew I would be towing the majority of the time with the truck, I wanted something that would be able to take anything I threw at it. Overkill is always better than underkill in my opinion.

The CDL requirements can render that rule invalid. Optimization is important in that case.
@KD7CAO6 жыл бұрын
@@TractorTimewithTim This rule varies state to state. There are federal regulations, but in most cases my experience is that an F350 Dually can have a truck that is rated for the 26,001 lbs (if ordered that way) and that would make it a Class B, a trailer added for 12,001 or greater it is now a Class A. If you use the same trailer on a truck rated at 26,000 or less and it stays a Class C. Depends on your state's rules too. Commerce operations can make a passenger car a commercial vehicle. Also carrying more than a certain weight of fuel in a transfer tank can require Hazmat endorsement.

My only suggestion is to get an air shock (Air Lift, Ride-Rite) system for the rear. I have had air shocks in the last three 1-ton trucks as it provides a way to level the truck to compensate for rear squat with the load weight. The truck rides better and controls the load better. Another benefit of the level truck is that the headlights are aimed onto the road instead of into the eyes of oncoming drivers. My personal choice is the Ride-Rite air bags with the Air Lift compressor and controller. The Ride-Rite bags are a heavier material, while the Air Lift compressor / controller is heavier duty, and provides independent control of the bags.

My current pickup is a ‘11 F 350 crew cab DRW with 3.73 gears and eight foot bed. It is a beast to park in small spots like you said. I have Sulastic spring hangers and air bags on the rear. The stock rear suspension was not as sturdy under load as my 05 Dodge DRW. I tow a Bighorn fifth wheel that weighs around 15000 lbs and a boat bass boat behind it. I’m just a bit over length. The rig will run down the highway at 75 mph with a 40 mph crosswind at 90 degrees. . I also an excavator that weighs around 20000 that I pull on a gooseneck. This gear ratio is the best of both worlds. It gives decent mileage and great power. I get 10 to 12 mpg loaded depending on wind. I have a 55 gallon aux tank . I have a friend that did not opt for the diesel. He has a GM 3500 SRW with a 6.5 bed. He recently moved a neighbor from central KS to central CO. With the short bed he only has a 24 gallon tank. At 6 mpg he did not pass up very many gas stations. The cost of maintaining the diesel is considerably higher. Just a few things to consider.

I'm one of those guys that think that anything less than an 8' bed is crazy... Until I got my tool box in the back of the truck. I turned my 8' bed into a 6' bed just like that. The difference being that I can still put 8' lumber or anything else 8' in under the bed since it has about a foot or so between the bottom of the box and the floor of the deck. I have a conventional cab so my overall length is probably about the same as yours with the back doors. Most of the time the tool box isn't a problem, but one time recently I was picking up some kitchen cabinets for a customer and if I didn't have that box in there I could have gotten them all in one trip. If I know I'll need the space, I can always take the box out and presto, I have an 8' bed again. The trouble with that is that it takes a while to unload the box so I can lift it out of the bed and put it back in again since I'm usually working alone. Most of life's choices are a compromise so we do the best we can with what we have to work with. Love your videos. Keep them coming.

As my dad always says, you can't have a big enough truck and trailer in this business ( within reason of course). A half ton might have done the job but they're not meant to tow that much weight like you seam to be towing. Good thing you went with a 350 as you can keep it and grow into it especially if you're pulling both pieces of equipment multiple times. Not to mention, it's not just about the everyday, but also those few times you own the truck that the extra power really pays off. My dad was going to go with the 5.3 in his new truck, luckely decided the 6.2 was best and ended up pulling an excavator with it a few months after owning it.

Watch Big Truck Big RV channel for reviews on truck reviews, such as gas vs. diesel. I think you picked the correct truck and color combination. Parking and tight spaces are always an issue. Yours is the most popular configuration, which will hold its value better. On the new aluminum trucks, the F350 has an upgraded transmission over the the F250 in addition to more rear springs. If you go on longer towing trips you may want to consider getting a larger aftermarket replacement gas tank, such as a Titan. If you do only order directly from the manufacturer to ensure that you get a brand new one.

They use the same cab as the larger Durastar and wow is it roomy. I don't haul trailers often, but want my options open. I hold a CDL Interstate Class A license so size is not an issue. Actually, one of my work vehicles we call Goliath is a 53 foot Freightliner Argosy straight truck. It is a Mobile Command and Communication Center for disaster response. That thing is a monster at 13 foot 6 inches tall. But, it cruises with Red and Blues on at 95 MPH. I often pull a compact tractor + implements on a 20 foot flatbed. The total weight can be slightly under 10K pounds when loaded with the tractor + three implements. I've pulled the load with my 2011 F150 Ecoboost, and with my F350 crew cab, diesel, dually. A world of difference in control and ease of towing with the F350. There are several canyons that I go through with high enough winds that there are calibrated wind socks showing the wind direction and you can tell the approximate velocity as the socks fully inflate at 15 knots. With the F150 in high winds, I could feel the trailer wagging the back end of the truck slightly - and I use an equalizing hitch. With the dually - you just cruise on and aren't even aware of the load.

@publicEnima6 жыл бұрын
It really comes.down to how much weight you can stop towing a trailer. I have hauled 10k pounds.of landscape block with a half ton with a air ride lift kit. Stopping was a bit tricky though. Then again I don't have brakes on my trailer nor do I tow a tractor as much as you guys. Maybe next Tuesday talk about stopping power instead of tow power. Diesel engines are nice but when they break down expensive repair job. Just my 2cents.
@TractorTimewithTim6 жыл бұрын
That may be true from a practical standpoint. However, I’m concerned about the law. You cannot tow 10k payload with a 1/2 ton legally. Nor can you haul 10k payload without brakes legally...at least in Indiana. So, when purchasing a truck and trailer, I would suggest focusing on the law.

I think your situation is perfect for a 2500 ram gas. 15 to 20k cheaper than a Ford diesel. Plus the 2500 has the coil springs and rides fantastic empty and loaded. I was surprised the last time I towed with a modern gas how well it did,regardless of brand. I rent trucks for work jobs so I have driven all brands of gas and diesel pickups.

The CDL was a reason I got a 3/4 ton instead of a one ton. I have a 14k dump trailer and if I had gotten a 1 ton the gcvwr would have been close to or over the 26001 gcvwr requirement of a cdl. But as you said things change and now I wonder if I should have just went with a 1ton and gotten a cdl and been less limited by the trailer that would be legal to tow

My wife and I have a Chevy Colorado that we really like. We decided that once we would like another Colorado or( depending what's going on) maybe move up to a full sized truck. By the way, my Mom calls our truck a "Tonka Truck" because it's "small". LOL.

In 2003 I needed a new truck, knowing a one ton was not big enough. I bought a GMC 4500 with a 17,500 gvw. Then GM got out of that market in 08. They are now back in that class 5-6. My point is if you can afford it go for the higher gvw. And equip the truck as best you can.
@TractorTimewithTim5 жыл бұрын
Well, only if you have a CDL, or no need for a trailer. With your truck, you only have 8500 lb max available for trailer without CDL.

Im quite sure it has bigger brakes and a stronger axle as well as the suspension Ive taken some tires to the county tire disposal day and i was pulling my 24ft pintle and they told my go past and unload my tires. Why not follow the line into the unload place. They questioned it cause my trl. I had to back up to turn tighter not cause the trl couldnt make but cause the trk couldnt. Trl can turn sharper than the trk on a lock turn

I've owned Chevy 1500's , 2500's and now the 6 cylinder Colorado. I tow my MF GC1720 TLB on a 16 foot trailer with trailer brakes. I went from 16 mpg with my 2500 to 25+ with the Colorado. I drive a lot and I will never go back to a large pickup as my everyday driver.

@chuckr86836 жыл бұрын
@@ericpowell335 I love it. Have 45 hours on and started using it in the spring. Got a piranha tooth bar for it. I have cleared a 35 X 40 foot area for a pole garage (a foot deep for half of it) moved 25 tons of crushed rock, cleared out for a new porch and lifted and moved a lot of concrete pad, hauled topsoil, turned big compost mounds with it, built a crusher run road/berm at my camp, and lots of lumber hauling with mini clamp on mini forks. I don't know how I survived so long without one. It hasn't had a lick of trouble yet. I will bring it in for a 50 hour service in March. It is a powerful machine.

I drive an F450 crew cab and the only places I avoid are the drive through because of the width restrictions. Yes I park at the end of the parking lots. Exercise does me good, gets rid of excess cheeseburgers. Wink Wink. I would park out at the end regardless, I’m not a fan of door dings and narrow parking. Many people drive beaters and could care less if that smash into your vehicle.
@TractorTimewithTim6 жыл бұрын
Not always an option. Last week at Louisville GIE show, we often had to take whatever space available.
@akbychoice6 жыл бұрын
Tractor Time with Tim I can still park in a regular parking, I just don’t given a choice to park elsewhere. I do understand why many wouldn’t opt for a dully. Driving Semis most of my life I’m use to bigger and much heavier trucks. The one thing about the F450 over the same wheel based F350 is that the F450 actually has a tighter turning radius.

The choice of a gear ratio is a big issue. We are converting our Kenworth W900L from three to four axles since we purchased a RGN trailed with four axles and a 55 ton load capacity. We had just redone the engine and front end (father in law is tough - don't cut corners). The axle ratio, if I remember correctly, is 3:15. Seems light but the truck will be fitted with an 18 speed HD transmission and a HD clutch. The CAT engine produces 2,080 lbs. of torque so we are just fine. We just go over the truck every 90 days and ask ourselves "What do we need to do?" To put the transmission in, for example, the carpet must be removed. This VERY labor intensive so the question is - should we replace it? No. There are no wear spots on it. But yes to the flywheel since it will be readily accessible. Diesel vs. gas: What is the break even mileage to make the diesel economical? The environmental control systems are expensive to maintain. Did you look at air springs? If so, do a video on it. BTW, there is some computer equipment that allows you to set your load over the center of gravity and measure the weight.
@TractorTimewithTim5 жыл бұрын
brief look at air springs, but not much. everything i read said that they would not improve ride when empty. I wanted smoother 'empty ride'. ...so gave up. Gas vs. Diesel. I agree on payback, but...with the new heavier trailer, I think the additional torque has value as well. It would be a hard pull for the gas engine. The diesel has enough trouble with it. So far, happy with the 3:31's. we like going FAST on the interstate :-)

I think you did your homework before you bought this truck. It sounds like you considered your future plans well this time. Lots of good information as usual.
@TERRORoftheLORD4 жыл бұрын
I think gas versus diesel comes down to total miles driven. I have a V10 that averages 13 mpg towing and oil changes and purchase price is far lower. Fir me the diesel doesn't make sense. I sold my diesel in 05 and have been driving a gas ever since.
@nashguy2076 жыл бұрын
Tim you make you some excellent points in this video When it comes to YOU and YOUR truck you bought what you wanted and suit your needs. I agree about the 8ft bed I have a 2012 GMC 2500 Diesel CC with the 6ft bed. I like you am in a suburban area and go into neighbor hoods daily I also didn't want a dully because of the width like you mentioned I had a 1500 before I bought the 2500 my 1500 pulled my then new trailer ok but it did have to work a little harder the 2500 pulls my trailer like a dream and sometimes I rent larger equipment that I don't think a 1500 would pull very well. Bob Cats and other things. Tell the people commenting that its not a real truck because it doesn't have an 8ft bed and so fourth that if they want a 8ft bed they can go buy a truck with one but you got what you wanted with your Money. LOL Great informative video as always. Have a great day. God Bless!!!

I’m a big supporter of getting the “lowest” gearing (highest number) available from the factory. I don’t drive cross country so the slight hit in highway fuel mileage is more than made up by the mechanical advantage and better fuel mileage you’ll get at speeds below 70mph, especially when towing and if you’re like me and put on larger and more aggressive tires and don’t want to regear the axles for the larger tires (been there, done that) recently for a personal truck the preowned truck I bought has the highest gearing (lowest number) gearing that was available and what that means is worse fuel mileage around town, less towing capacity, and now that I’ve put 2in larger tires on my fuel mileage took a noticeable hit and the truck lost a little pep. So I’ve told myself from now on if I buy a new truck I will only get the lowest gearing available.

Accrually the strings, blocks, and brakes should all be different. And they used to have different axle irk if this is still the case or not.

Have you upgraded your trailer ball mount? The one in the video appears to be a hollow shank mount.
@nathanbrodeur6 жыл бұрын
Tim if you had a gas and diesel truck spec'd the same same gooseneck trailer on both with the same 18,000 LBS weight the gas would end up having a wider turning radius and steering on the highway than the diesel because the gas engine is lighter the extra 400 LBS of the diesel keeps the front end planted to the road better
