This is what always scared me about modifying my s5 I did a remap on my transit custom a few years ago and it went wrong a few months later and blew the turbo oil seals and caused engine runaway. The s5 although petrol not diesel is considerably more expensive and a lot more expensive to fix. I have an extended warranty on the audi that cost a few hundred pounds at the time that would be void if the car was modified perhaps after that runs out I may look into stage 1 but I don't think I would risk going beyond that figure you are stressing engine far enough at that.

If you’re getting oil past the rings on cyl 1, maybe a ring land is cracked from that event that broke the electrode letting that oil pass by. Often times when scoping the piston, it can look fine from the top but have damage to the ring land.

@@accordv6er The EA839 platform is 5 years old now, plenty of cars above 100k miles, and major issues/failures seem to be a rarity. Even more rare in folks who are not beating the absolute death out of their cars. If your plan is to buy an SQ5 as a daily, and occasionally rip it on a backroad, there's no real reason not to. I bought a used '18 S5 this year, and apart from moving the maintenance schedule up 10k (to account for unknown maintenance from previous owners,) I don't have any real concerns about this thing. If your plan is to take it to stage 3+ and hit the track constantly, just make sure you get one with low mileage and do all the preventative work up-front (intercooler, injectors, etc.) I would comfortably call Adam a pioneer in the platform, and he has used the hell out of his machine, upgraded it beyond what 99.9% of owners have, and only just now run into a major concern. That's pretty good for any modern platform, honestly.

Thank you for the kind words. Even with these problems, I'd still have a B9 any day of the week over a B8.5. They are so much more enjoyable to drive. Plus, I know of plenty of B8 owners that have lost motors to other failures. I didn't push my B8 any harder than a full bolt on setup, and that's probably a reason my motor didn't fail on that platform.

I sold my 19 s5 8 month ago because of similar issues. I was on pure750 for more than a year and first 6 month were trouble free. Then had a failed stock injector, month later car would start misfire on 3 cylinders. Spark plugs were completely black when i pulled them out, replaced them with aftermarket ones. Nothing changed, later i noticed oil in my cylinders. Decided to sell it before ill need a new angine and transmission. Transmission wouldn't shift from 3rd to 4th sometimes in auto mode, and then throw me an transmission overheat. It was my weekend car and loved to drive it, but going stage 3 we gotta know the risk of it. Good luck with your s4 and i hope nothing major is wrong with it.

Similar situation here, sold my 18 B9 S4 around 8-9 months ago, turbo failure and a few other things, the price they wanted to repair just wasn't worth it, they only value these cars at like $40k or so anyways and when repairs are like $10-12k, it's better to just walk away then to spend like 20% of the cars value on repairs.

when I was at vw we have seen a few none tuned gti's and golf r's with the same issues with the spark plugs, didn't find any cylinder or piston damage. we are thinking that the top of the spark plug got way to hot, they had oem spark plugs and ignition coils. To me it looks like the plug tip was consumed (i.e., burned away) rather than broken off. Without compression (due to non-firing cylinder) the rings won't seal properly, letting some oil blow by. That's probably the best case scenario. Let's hope it was a loose spark plug or some other easy fix!

@@VancityAudi Not an expert, but have screwed up and owned plenty of bum engines in the past: Oil low by on a plug thick and crusty and happens almost immediately. The first replacement plug (6:48) has a thin matte coating as if though it's running cool or the A/F was too rich. The second replacement plug (7:38) looks fine to me. The top two rings are compression rings and the oil control rings sit further down on the piston. So damaging only the oil control ring(s) and not the compression ring(s) seems unlikely (that static compression is within 10% across all cylinders says the compression rings are likely OK). What happened to kick this all off? Might never know and there might have been multiple failures. If it were me I'd redo the static compression test and then do the leak down test. If both are within factory spec for all cylinders I'd continue to check the plug every few days of normal driving.

I've been daily driving it since the failure. I've downgraded to the 91 octane tune. Still oil in the cylinder. Car has trouble starting sometimes. I haven't put more than 10lbs of boost through it. Drives totally normal though. Once my RS3 is fixed and on the track we'll look into fixing the B9.

What spark plugs were in the car (the one that failed)? Also, did the injector shop give you any flow data that you could compare to a reference to see if it was maybe partially clogged? Sorry to hear about the motor.

I showed a photo of the spark plugs I was using in the video, along with their part #. As for flow data, I haven't picked up the injector yet from testing. Plus, they have nothing to compare it against. When I get a chance, I am going to bring in a brand new AQ injector and have them test against that.
