I love the idea of having a culinary focused garden! We are only in year two of our homesteading journey and we continue to learn as we grow. This year I started with a couple of things that are new to us, such as fresh thyme, rosemary, Lemon balm and six different varieties of basil! While these are staples to some, they are very new to us and experimenting with their flavors has been so much fun! I especially love the lemon balm honey syrup! We can’t wait to see what you do with the space and all of the deliciousness that comes from it!

What you’re describing is really the natural progression that happens with gardening for most people. You start off growing the “old standards” that you may have either grown up or chosen for their ease or high yields and then at some point most folks always start dedicating some space in their gardens to growing new things for their novelty or unique flavors. This is one of the joys of gardening. It allows you to bring flavors to your cooking that are not usually found in the average grocery store or market.

Oh I am very excited for you and for us! Beyond having the soothing space of the garden, I also enjoy growing food for interesting flavors. It is always a balance, isn’t it! At the moment (in AZ) I have a ton of a hardy paste tomato growing. A workhorse that will give me lots of sauce…and just a couple of heirlooms, because that is all I had the space for. Next year I also want more space for those delicious (but often temperamental) varieties. Looking forward to your tips on gardening heirlooms!

This past year I had trellis of beans and ghords and ive gotten so many fun pics with this trellis it's been an awful year for our garden really lot disappointments due to the weather and bad harvest and then when all the things happened with dad and my son I was still able to come back to the trellis. So your right if wasn't for trellis I prob thru the towel in bc its been rough one. But I am so thrilled to learn about hybrid vs heirloom and combine the too!!! Bc yes am for flavor made some the best speghetti sauce and bbq sauce this year with all the varieties but would like to do more maybe sell some produce as well and share this wonderful flavors with others.

I grow a garden to provide fresh vegetables for my family to eat year round, cook with my own herbs and limit the expense at the grocery store. Tonight’s toasted tomato sandwiches - I never knew there were so many colors and flavors of tomatoes. My mom made the best Thanksgiving turkey and this year I can use my own herbs to season everything! 😃

I'm not new to gardening but I'm back from a gardening hiatus. This year was my year for exploration. Most of what I grew and am growing this fall was for flavor/color. Next year will be the shift from growing for fun and curiosity sake to growing more for production. I will have a blend of hybrids and heirlooms. Heirlooms have my heart and I think always will. But I do need more in the way of production.

💡May consider making new high tunnel only Dahlias and Peppers (that both can over winter in the high tunnel slightly warmed by a compost bin in the center), much less work digging up and waiting for maturity every year. 💡 Also can use shade cloth over Dahlia side to promote slight "legginess" for longer sellable stems. 💕 Just thoughts. 💕💕Excited for you!!!! 💕💕

I know what you’re talking about, Jill. I had raised beds and two trellises by my pool and extra space planted out near my greenhouse this year. After doing that I realized I want to do more gardening that heals the soil and my small area of earth. So next year will look different for me as well. Currently looking into some different things like more food forest type design along with rain garden and swale ideas to help control the flow of water down our property

For me it was self-sufficiency and the fact I have been a foodie for decades. I like shopping my back yard. My issue now is that I got covid and I still cant taste or smell anything. Its horrible!!! I have a beautiful garden and chickens...and cant smell or taste a thing. How does a gardner plant food they cant taste or smell? This is so difficult and I havent seen anyone discuss this in the garden/homestead world. Im so sad.
