If you're a rider who loves to hit the open road on two wheels, you know that handling is everything. Unfortunately, one of the most common issues that riders face is speed wobble. This is a phenomenon where the front wheel begins to oscillate back and forth uncontrollably, often at high speeds. Not only is it unnerving, but it can also be dangerous.
In this video, we'll explore how changing your tires can help alleviate speed wobble. Specifically, we'll take a look at the MotoZ Dualventure tire for the front and the MotoZ Rallz for the rear. These tires are designed to offer superior handling and stability, especially on rough terrain.
I had been using MotoZ Rallz on my Harley Davidson Pan America Special with great success, so decided to put them on my Aprilia Tuareg 660. I encountered poor handling and road manners above about 70mph (~112kph), with speed wobble around 77-79mph.
Before I began traveling to ADV Fest 2023 out in Mojave, CA, I decided to put the OE Pirelli tires back on the bike. While they did work very well for on-road travels, I was still interested in seeing if I could find a tire combo that would work well for on-road travel, but be more more aggressive for off-road fun.
On the road, I reached out to Kyle Bradshaw ( / @manybikes ) to see if we could talk tires for a bit. Kyle really brought the stoke, and we setup a time where I could swing by his house, talk tires, what makes a good tire, and then possibly do an install.
My normal shop charges $30/each + plus taxes and shop supply fees to change tires. Being able to swap the tires out at home saves at least $60 and the time.
After discussing with Kyle, I opted for the MotoZ Dualventure upfront and the RallZ on the rear. I was still a little nervous about the Dualventure, but hey, I was talking to 'THE tire guy'. Shorly after the install, I had the bike fully loaded again and was on the road down to Oceanside, CA. The pavement has some decent grooving to shed water, and I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of speed wobble (up to ~82mph, I've not tested anything faster yet).
