Same here except for me it was Hong Kong. Spent 10 months working there in 1990 then used the money I saved for 2 months traveling through Thailand and Malaysia. Spent the next few years at a job in a bank I absolutely hated and starting every other sentence with "In Hong Kong..." until I had no friends left and even my parents had taken out a restraining order 😂 So quit my job and went back and next year will be 30 years. No regrets.

As someone who has moved around a lot, I feel it is no use having regrets, once you have committed because there is no way, to what would have happened if you stayed. For instance, you may have been bitten by a mosquito with dengue and died (36,000 per year wild-wide)or tomorrow,(Ireland) you have a couple of "Murphys" and trip over a loose pavement stone and crack your head. There are so many variables and outcomes. You'll go crazy thinking about it.

Do I regret coming here at 43 and not continuing working in my prime? Shit yeah I do. But if I had of continued working and not moved here back in 2006 then we wouldn't have our second child. Sure, we may have a second child but not the exact same person. I would say to someone considering staying here or coming here to ensure your finances are first rate......because I thought mine were and now 17 years later they just are not. We get by and don't want for any of the basics, but there is no luxury in our lives. Another ten or even five years of work would have covered that.........and if I worked until today, 60 years old, then I'd be minted!!!!! It's a trade off. The longer you work the more you will have. Great video.

I would add a couple of my own extra questions to this interview: 1. How difficult/easy was it for you to find a job in Ireland? Official unemployment rate in Ireland is now 4.8 % (which is low). Would you say this corresponds to the reality on the ground? 2. How difficult was it to find a place to live? 3. How did you find Ireland after 12 years in Thailand? It`s often referred to as the reverse culture shock. How did you experience it? And it doesn`t have to be a "shock" in any literal sense of the word. But there must have been things you felt and noticed. 3. How bad is crime in Dublin? It gets mentioned on your channel quite a bit. How safe/unsafe is public transport in Dublin? Or is it that Noon just needed to gain a little experience of how to move about the city? And there is more I would want to hear. I mean if you asked me what I want more of on your channel, I would definitely say more details of everyday life in Dublin. Are there any other Irish-Thai couples in Ireland that would be willing to share their experiences of moving to Ireland? Well, after all, it`s Tha - Irish Times, isn`t it, it`s not just Thai, there is also the "rish" part of it.

Hey Pete, I'm a 48-year-old guy considering a permanent move to Thailand. I've been living in New Zealand for the past ten years, and, well, life's gotten a bit dull (as you'd expect). I've worked as a filmmaker for two decades. Now after working for the government as a technology specialist, for the last 7 years, I'm switching gears to slowly start a small tech freelance business to make this move happen. I know it takes a few years to get me to the door. The only doubt that makes me hesitate about this move is health insurance and healthcare-related costs, especially when it comes to the quality and major surgical procedures in Thailand for foreigners like me. New Zealand is doing well in this department. In general, how would you rate the cost and reliability of various surgeries in Thailand? Does an identical surgery cost less in Thailand compared to Ireland, for example, or is there any way to address this issue through insurance? I wish you could make an in-depth video around this topic, when possible. Your guidance and honest experiences have been a real game-changer for me. It's great to see you've found true love in the Land of Smiles. I think it's because of your genuine heart and honesty. All the best on your journey, and I hope our paths cross one day in Thailand if fate allows! Cheers.

A handful of thoughts: The phrase "the Land of Smiles" is a marketing slogan, a not a description of reality. Thailand is no paradise on earth: there are pros and cons to living in Thailand, just as there are pros and cons to living in Ireland (or anywhere else for that matter). Time after time I come across farangs who go through two phases: the rose-tinted glasses phase, where he thinks he`s in paradise - mostly when he finds himself a girlfriend. Then comes a reality check and the rose-tinted glasses get shattered (because, say, his girlfriend turns out to be somebody quite different from the love of his life he initially thought she was) and our chap turns angry and bitter and bitches about Thailand (you`ll easily come accross those types in the comment section of the Bangkok Post, for example). Even if Thailand is the land of smiles (which I don`t really think it is), it certainly is NOT the land of angels and the sooner you realize it, the better are your chances of a satisfying Thailand experience. Ideally, you should be aware of it before ever going to Thailand. A well-balanced approach is much better, I think, and that applies to personal decisions as well as to YT channels on Thailand. There was an Australian fellow, whose name I don`t remember now, who ran a channel about his life in Chiang Mai with his lovely Thai wife Rannia. In his videos he was so soppy mushy about Thailand that I once wrote him a comment to the effect that he is being a bit over the top and he didn`t like my comment very much. Fast forward a couple of years, he got a knee injury and his perfect Thai wife double crossed him. He left Thailand for the Philippines and turned bitter and resentful about Thailand. What I value about your channel is that there is none (well, I didn`t watch all your videos, so hopefully none) of the soppy nonsense I came across in many other channels on Thailand. Please keep it this way.

Such arrogance! What planet are you on! Pete's close attachment to Thailand is as apparent now as it ever was, and I admire him massively for having the courage to live and work in Thailand for a large chunk of his adult life. I suppose it is easy to criticise from the comfort of your living room.

@@BeingFrankOnIpswichTown-jt2my i've been in-country sweating for 16 years. i wouldn't brand myself as being in Thailand if I wasn't in Thailand. my comment is that simple. if he's not working and living in Thailand, then he should rebrand. he's just a poser at this point -- in my [not so] humble opinion.

@@masteryancodesan You are entitled to your opinion of course, but bear in mind he is still living in Thailand every day with his wife Nune and their collective love of the country. Most of his interviews revolve around people who are still living out there and I don't think he is conning anyone by continuing to make content that is nearly always Thai related anyway.
