I did RV inspections for a few years after I retired from my Career Job. Just like a Buyers Agent for a residence. Folks who aren't familiar with RV construction will be miles ahead by having their possible purchases inspected by someone who is an expert in them and will follow an inspection list and be very thorough. I spent several years in an RV Factory so I knew them inside out. Plus I've always owned an RV and enjoyed making the maintenance a hobby. I have never been turned away from any reputable RV Dealership. Just make sure your Buyers Agent doesn't have any financial connections with the Dealerships. SO, I highly approve of Liz's Video.

I wished I saw this video before I purchased my RV. I bought a used RV and so far its doesn't have many issues. The exception was the heating system fluid which provides radiant heat, heats the water should be flushed and filled every 2 years. I discovered this had never been done. Luckily none of the hoses had not started bulging from old fluid and ruining the heater, if hey had it would be very costly to replace that entire (Alde) system. If fact, if I had known how much it cost having the service done on that system I would not have purchased that RV. Having these inspections done can really save a potential buyer a lot of money. Thank you for interviewing this lady,

👍 I did Home Inspections for prospective buyers before it was common. I charged by the hour and started with what could be deal killers and where possible had the buyer walk with me. That way, we could call it quits and save the buyer a lot of $$ by them only paying for time taken, not for a whole inspection. You seem an inspector with integrity. Thank you!

Yes! This is another huge topic that does not get discussed enough in a public forum! There is a lack of education and a lack of honest dealers. My neighbors had a terrible time with a brand new RV. Every time they took it out camping, there was a new issue. And every time they took it back in for repairs, it came back to them in worse condition. Additionally, the stealership tried to charge them for things that were covered by warranty, essentially "double dipping."

The trouble with roof leaks, particularly near vertical walls, is water tends to run down into the wall itself. This is often what causes delamination on side walls, because water seeping behind the surface has broken down the glue, wood, or both.

On one hand I want to say thank you for admitting that you made a mistake by not having it inspected before hand. But then on the other hand I am also shocked that you made such and important purchase without it, considering your history with RVs, this being your 9th one as you said. Hi Julien, the sellers were great! They put in new furniture, carpet, TVs, roof, toilet, full body paint and even changed the oil every 3000 miles. We bought a 2016 fifth wheel last spring, well when we went to look at it we were told it’s winterize and no water access, and we couldn’t open the slides all the way, because it was in a pole building…..we did buy it brought it home the following week. It was about 200 miles from our home, on the way home on the interstate, we blew a trailer tire on the drivers side, didn’t want to change it on the road a bit to dangerous, we limped to the next exit and changed it in a parking lot, not enough air in the tires, probably heated up. Got home and bought all new tire. But when the tire blew it ripped the bottom underbelly open, another fix! Big expensive on day one. Then while we had the Rv home things were more noticeable instead of inside of a pole building. The entertainment slide is off kilter, found lots of swirl scratches on the same slide, and the decals don’t match. Called the original dealer to see it it was in a accident or something and they told us no, just was in for regular service. Only time will tell. But on a good not the roof looks good. 😊😊😊😊 I definitely love the fifth wheel, my husband wants to downsize already 😩

Wow, what an adventure right out of the gate! I hope all that is behind you now, and that it is smooth sailing (camping!) from here on out. I've had 3 fifth wheels and I loved them all. Hoping your husband gets used to driving it and decides there is no need to downsize. Happy camping!

In our search for our dream RV we ended up walking away from a brand new Newmar due to a slide issue that was found thru an inspection. We did find our dream Newmar but the experience from the previous inspection we were able to provide the 2nd inspector with possible issues. We have purchased the 2nd RV we had inspection but we do have a couple of items we need to address. An inspection is not just for big issues it helps with knowing the little issues so you can maintain them.

An RV inspection is definitely a must these days. One thing I'd be cautious of, however. If you find someone who is an Inspector AND a technician, they should be unwilling to do both for the same customer. This prevents any semblance of inpropriety. Do you really want a repair technician going over your vehicle and "Finding" things that need to be fixed? I'd be much more comfortable with an inspector/tech who told me if they do an inspection for me, they will not perform any repairs for me for at least X months. This way I know they aren't just going to make stuff up to improve the invoice bottom line.

All great points! I bought my motorhome new in 2019. The dealer had customer lots on their property that allowed customers that purchased their new or used RV to stay on the property for up to 2 days. This allowed us to test everything in real life conditions. We discovered one problem with the deadbolt lock on the door that the dealer immediately fixed the next day. If this option wasn’t available to me I would have definitely had the coach inspected by a professional.

This is a huge topic not discussed nearly enough! So many people bet burned both from a dealer and privately. There is such a lack of education available. I am certain the stealerships don't want people to know when an RV is bad news. When my husband I were looking for our used unit, we were flabbergasted at all the evidence of maintenance neglect we were seeing, and we only knew enough to be dangerous at the time. If the owners did not take care of the inside, they probably didn't take care of the outside either. We ended up buying a much newer unit (more $$$) than we wanted to, so that the unit hadn't had enough time to suffer the effects of maintenance neglect, and we STILL ended up with an issue from the manufacturer that an inspector would not have likely noticed either. It's really hard to win at this. We are looking to upgrade after this camping season, and I feel like even after we go over it with a fine tooth comb, knowing more now then we ever havem we should pay for an inspection as well as read up everything we can find on the unit we are looking at, especially owner forums. There are lots of gems to be found there.

Every year we have a full service, this is in the UK, that includes everything, all the seams, gas and electricity, all wheels, brakes every single thing, and your log book is signed by the service man, In fact we have 10 year guarantee when we buy the caravan, which is transferable to the new owner if you sell it. But you have to get your van serviced by a dealer who is registered, to keep your guarantee. It has to be around the date you bought it yearly. We do have a totally different system here, in that the manufacturer gives the 10 year guarantee, so any problem when you purchase it, is put right. Some dealerships even provide a site for you to stay on after you’ve bought it, so that anything you find that’s not right they sort it there and then, but in the 40 years we have had caravans we have dealt with the same dealership, and anything that’s been wrong has soon been sorted.

Exactly! Women many times will spot little details that a guy will miss, and not just bad decorating 🤔 I was told by a rv salesman that “Majory” of women will only spot the flaws in the decorations in an RV😵‍💫 But then another salesman told me the opposite, that many women will spot the flaws all around and ask questions that salesmen will avoid or talk down to the lady to discount her ‘little fears’!! As a Navy Wife (and Navy daughter) I can spot stuff and won’t let anyone discount me. Car salesmen hate me😂 I even had a sales guy at a car dealership pull some stupid DANGEROUS stuff that he got fired for because I got ahold of the owner! Too many people don’t walk away from a deal when their “spide” senses go up…. Women especially. Love seeing women in the field of normal male dominated businesses.

Randy, call out the dealer by name and be sure to write a yelp review also. The community needs your real experience feedback. I do not recommend Pan Pacific in French Camp for insurance repairs. You will not get quality work and neither that dealer nor the ins adjuster cares. $7k for a cabinet replacement after a tire blowout. A substandard 3 mo amateur job, and long before the pandemic hit.

I currently own a Heartland. After 15+ years RVing I have come to the conclusion they are mostly junk and with the rising prices the only things that have changes are their profits. The tires are junk, the axles are running at their max, the roof last months before you need to get up there and fix stuff. If I buy another one it will be an Airstream but they are six figures, at least the don't depreciate like a 5th wheel does.

Bought a used 2003 RV without an inspection. But I bought it knowing it needed work and I have it at a place that does that. Be ready for long, Month(s) long wait times for some parts. The steering was really loose (3 inches each way before the front wheels turned). They told me the price they were quoted was $2500 . But that was the whole drag link (not including the cost of the install). I talked to them and looked into it. I watched the video they had and saw that the bad end of the drag link screwed off. They then looked around and found a source for just that part, not the whole drag link, that was much cheaper. But I am still waiting for it after a month+. There are several paints/sealants/tape sealants for roofs, windows, ect. So you can do some leak repair yourself if only temporary. Better to wait at home than while RVing I think. Hope you are having fun RVing.

Yup! In particular, the issues with recent new models are horrible. In 2012, manufacturers started lightening the trailers to make them tow-able by the smallest vehicle. Then, in 2020, quality went down the toilet.

We bought a used rv from a private party. At the time it only had 3,000 miles on it (it was 3 years old at the time). Anyway, we found out why the mileage was low as the steering was wacky - we were constantly over steering. It was a white knuckle ride. We have since had dampeners installed and the rig aligned. Saying that, it’s my suggestion that when having a potential rv inspected you include undercarriage, steering and ask for any recommendations.

The single most important aspect of RV living is the expense that comes with it. Motorhome, maintenance, fuel, campground sites, etc, etc, etc. Most channels only talk about being on the open road, the freedom, getting back to nature. That may all be true, however there’s a cost to it. Liz, always keeps it real!

Thank you for a very important video. I think most RV buyers do not realize the importance of having a tv checked out by either a professional, or by a prospective buyer that knows of all the checks that should be taken into consideration. I especially appreciated the comments regarding the ‘new roof’. With such a big expense, like a house, have it checked; spend now, save down the road.

Then when I took it back to Havasu, the guys knew the RV these people didn’t want to spend $5000 for a new motor so ,I got ripped off …I went back to the people said I will see you in court so they paid for half the motor so that’s what happened there… Buyer beware…

Excellent video. I don't think you made a mistake in buying your RV although you're probably seeing some of the issues that would have made you a better informed buyer. I'm now concerned about some water we found in our basement but we also discovered one of the vent caps had been knocked off the roof. I think we caught it in time but can't check it as it's still in the process of being repaired from the tire blowout.

One thing I might add is to learn when to walk away. Don't get caught up with all the whistles and bells. Look beyond that. Same goes with buying cars. We flew to Rochester, MN to purchase a class C and ended up driving a tiny rental car back home. Recently, travelled 8 hours to purchase a fifth wheel, and walked away from it. People are very good at taking strategic photos. I can tell from their expression, when I show up with my flashlight and other tools, and start going through all the nooks and crannies. When in doubt, walk away.

Our engine ran hot coming into Washington State. We called a wrecker that towed our motorhome to a place next to a busy highway with nothing to keep it safe. People like keyed it all over everywhere. At one place it looked like the hit it with a car .It took us 20 days to get a wrecker to tow our motorhome to have it severed . Then a couple of days later we call to have the motorhome towed to Cummins. It took like 5 to 6 weeks to get a wrecker to tow it to Cummins. Later Cummins call and said that the motorhome was ready. We went 35 miles the engine ran hot again. We pulled over and called roadside assistance they promptly showed up two days later. The person that came with the wrecker to tow us back to Cummins did not hook his air line to our motorhome. We found out the next day what we needed an new engine. Also when the last wrecker pulled into Cummins he back our motorhome into a concreate barrier. He had towed our motorhome like 40 miles with all wheel braked locked down. We are lucky the darn thing didn't burn down. So as of now I at Cummins parking lot . Our first break down was Sept 6, 2022. I have no idea how many months we will be here. We have a bid for repair should be ready next week. So in I guess 2 to 5 months later maybe we will be back on the road. whoopee isn't this fun lol .

Jonathan Yench a van travel youtuber bought a used big foot camper last year. He was planning to remodel it but he was still surprised by the extent of the project once he started to unbolt and take apart. It’s pretty much everything has to go except the fiberglass shell. I think even buying new ones they should be inspected.

@@LizAmazing Woodworking shops sell wood moisture meters that will read moisture in wood and other similar surfaces. Just press to the surface in question and push a button. They are less than $30 on Amazon. If the ceiling is dry but a little "punky" from previous moisture, consider a "rot fix" epoxy that you inject into the soft areas. It's thin as water and soaks into the wood via capillary action. Dries hard as a rock. Much cheaper than tearing off the new roof to replace some plywood.
