I always found it interesting just how vastly different machine spirits are, and how much they're animated. Because the whole pseudo so, but not might work for titans, and knights. But the level of personality that some of their guns are able to display is interesting. I wonder what kind of personality would an ancient gun passed down between heros possess? And would it take on the character of its users?

A wandering psyker roamed the corpse-laden battlefield, barely surviving the bullets, lasbolts, and shrapnel from every direction. Guardsmen and Astartes littered the rocky ground, their bodies missing chunks or ridden with holes from whatever manner of weapon used in the carnage. Powerful and infamous though he may have been by default by being a psyker, he was still human at his base, both physical and emotional, with his own wounds that were nothing major, and his anxious breathing from seeing the dead-set faces of every body. He heard a voice. It was faint, but constant, an echo that grew in noise when he went towards it. His whole life, he felt comfortable with the strange and mighty-unusual, even more so when it was discovered that he was a psyker and inducted into the Scholastica Psykana, where his connection to the warp was honed and put to use serving the Imperium. Arrived he had, but there were still dead bodies all around. Yet the echo was at it's loudest, almost as if it was below him. And below him he looked, looking at a bolter. The echoes stopped and were immediately replaced with words that wallowed out its abandonment. "Don't leave me. Please, don't leave me. I don't want to live on like this." "Curious." His anxiety was lessened a little from what would have seemed insane. But he had encountered the insane more times than he could count, and with effort at carrying the weapon of the Emperor's Angels, the voice's words had changed when the gun was picked up, confirming the psyker's thoughts of who, or what the voice belonged to, as well as startling him at it's next words. "Unhand me, you tainted wench." He almost dropped the weapon from the immediate insult, still not fully ready for the confrontation. With a shaky breath, he responded. "That isn't a proper way to thank someone who picked you off the ground, now is it?" "He's talking to himself. So they really are more insane than we thought." "I've been called insane more times than the total amount of fingers and toes I have, so your creativity is lax, in my humble opinion." A lull in the conversation, as the voice that the psyker now had an idea of what it exactly was had been pondering at finally communicating, and to someone not of it's own kind or those machine-men, no less. "So... you can hear me." Plain words "Yes." Plain reply "And you aren't of the Mechanicum." More plain words "Yes." Another plain reply "But you are a psyker." Now there was contempt. "And what are you going to do about it?" A spiteful question filled with tiredness at barely surviving and walking the aftermath of the battle, only to find the only other living things that disrespected him at every turn. The voice of the now confirmed machine spirit chuckled. "I can give you advice, user of the warp. You can point me at your chest or face, pull the trigger and find out what comes next." The chuckling turned into a full bellow. "That is the best you can do for yourself, you magic spouter." He had enough of this. His patience was built over years from the harsh training and mistreatment his kind had endured, yet this was pushing it to his absolute limits. He would drop the damned gun, stamp and dirty it, and obliterate it with his powers, and he would continue searching for a way off this damn planet and back on a cruiser. Just as he was about to do the first act, a tingling pain blossomed all over him, having him bend his knees and breathe with great heaves. Intrusion. Perversion. Removal. All unpleasant, all that needed to stop immediately. He wasn't the only one to feel them. "Nooooooo! How much longer are you going to spoil my lord and deny his body a worth rest? How much more!?" It continued on, so much so that the psyker dropped on one painful knee, yet that seemed miniscule compared to what he felt in his soul. With his utmost concentration, he blocked the sensations completely from himself and the machine spirit followed afterwards. "What" a deep breath, "was" a deep breath, "that?" a final exhale and return to his hyperventilating state. "Those," hatred more personal came from every word. "were the Daemon pickers who took my lord's body, now removing his armour like the vile creatures they are." Anger so pure it went hot all over him, the psyker felt it all too well, just as familiar as his connection to the Immaterium. Clarity suddenly came to his mind, an idea that seemed to be his only viable one, but highly dangerous at the same time, yet what other options were available to him. "Your lord. I assume he is an Astartes?" "What else could he be, you fool." uttered the boltgun in an outburst from being interrupted from his thinking. "That means his communications equipment would be able to reach off-world, to any nearby ships in range." "And what relevance does this have?" If it's mind was clear from the grief, it would realise what was about to be suggested. "A deal." The gun was now listening closely. "I go find your lord's body, and use the communications equipment to call for transport off this planet." "You wouldn't even know how to use it." "Which is why your going to help me activate and use it." "And why would I do that?" "Because if you don't, I will leave you and drop the barrier that is stopping you from experiencing those perverting intrusions." The machine spirit didn't have to think long and hard on the answer. "You won't even make it." "I am the only survivor, as far as I can tell. Who knows what might happen?" "Then we have a deal. Just make sure to let the Black Templars know of my Lord's fallen body if you succeed." "What is his name?" "I will only answer that if you succeed, something I have high doubts of." He sighed, "A little assurance would go a long way, you know." "And why would I do that?" He decided not to answer the rhetorical question and instead extracted the rucksack and lasgun off of a nearby Guardsman, making sure they had enough rations and ammo for the journey and fight ahead. He put the boltgun into the bag, the spirit voicing his displeasure of being put inside something so degrading, yet the psyker drowned it out, walking towards either his rescue of death. If he didn't make it, then at least he died knowing he tried his hardest. The machine spirit would either reunite with his Lord, or forever be abandoned on this rock until he was picked up by Imperial or archenemy hands. Only success or failure awaited them and nothing in between, and it was that which had driven them both to absolute resolution to see this to the end.

@@ChaoticVoicesofAndreas, Tell you what. When I have much more free time, I'll see what I can come up with. I can't guarantee it'll be a lot, but maybe the bare bones with which to build up on. And since you want a comic series, this will probably be easier to write out, since my narrative comments were more word novels and this will have less description and more quotes and monologues, maybe a written script. I'll see what I come up with, but that means I will have to read more 40k novels and look up facts.

"Tell me Astartes, would you still serve me if I told you there was no reward after? Would you serve me if I told you all that awaited after your fall in battle was the flaying of your soul by the never born?" "If I told you that there would be no parades in your honor no song sung. And your glory unrecorded, and forgotten. Would you still serve?" "You cannot serve me if in the end you want to only serve yourself and feed the pit of pride bound deep within your heart. If I told you all these right before you walked the path of the Angel's, would you have still chosen to become my sword?" "You must give up everything to serve me. A peaceful afterlife and all the reverence and rememberance that comes with it, is just one of those things that must be sacrificed upon the pyre in order to serve me. So that I may continue to serve them."

Not my comment, but I like how the dialogue is both applicable as an inner monologue of either the space marine or the bolter showing the way Imperium sees its soldiers, even the more valuable space marines who have been known to be ever so willing to pack up shop and leave and endanger civvies if the battle's not worth it.

Then he stands and recoils in pain as fire bursts from his armor's joints and from the hole in his helmet... And it ends with him removing his helm and having a burning skull for a face... and he enters the warp, where his brothers of the Legion of the Damned await him.

The astartes lies there. Its death was drawn out,as if cruel irony demanded it. But then something happened. The astartes saw it through its good eye. A young man. The man radiated a quiet light within, his features were that of the aeons old people of Eurasia. His hair darker still. He wore simple clothes. His eyes were golden, yet unlike the emporors orbs of golden fire, this beings eyes were quieter. The boy looked weary, but perservered. Until he looked at the astartes. "Sleep,my little angel. When you wake, you shall be reborn in purpose anew." The young mans voice was peaceful, yet seared with might and authority. The astartes did so gladly. It was then the Neverborn came. The bloodletters stopped in there tracks. They saw this child for what it really was. The Revelation. The Star Child. Neoth. The Star Child turned, and with a gesture, the bloodletters were insolated in blue fire, oblerated within seconds. Then he vanished from this world. The dark king wouldn't have these souls. Not today. The ruinous powers all saw this. The humanity of the Anathema has now entered the game. And he is wholely unpredictable.
