i think you have a very valid point. ultimately art is subjective and therefore im inclined to agree that overworking is more a myth than anythinh

Artists of all kinds are very self critical and overworking is real in a sense but its not as if its a bad thing. I mean every type of art has a sort of equivalent, I mean every time I trim my plants they look way worse then they did before trimming and wont look better for potentially weeks but in the end the plant or plants will look at least as good as they did when I started and potentially a lot better. I mean I am sure that people who sculpt from clay also have a similar issue, their art can get uglier before it gets prettier and that can make some people nervous.

I think both things can be true! It's primarily a myth and only you can tell if something you're making is done or not. Things can be finished once, twice, a hundred times over again. On the other hand, I've definitely worked with mediums that chewed themselves up when I worked on them too much or for too long, to the point where something was Ruined. I feel like thats the only way something can REALLY be overworked.

I think it is possible to overwork an artwork if you are trying to achieve a certain style, for example, if you want to make a more 'impressionistic' painting, it might be a good idea to not fill in all of the details and leave certain areas 'underworked' so that the "impression" of the scene is captured. However, if that is not your intent, then I don't think you can actually overwork a painting. If you think it's finished, then it is, if not, then it's not. Simple as that.

If the clouds had the same amount of contouring to make them pop then it would be cohesive
