This has been a really informative *and relaxing* video! I've been into impressionism for quite some time now and I would really appreciate a video dedicated to how you use colours! I still can't quite get the concept of using colours such as purples and greens and blues in depicting humans (considering the fact that I'm only a beginner) and I would want to know how to do them just like you do :D you're really an inspiration

If I can add something, for the "sealing" part, maybe it can help people. You have to let the drawing dry before apply anything on top (just like oil painting, so, depending on the thickness, it can be take few weeks, or maybe months) Also, on the market, the only "oil pastel fixative" is the sennelier :/ But you can use any oil painting fixative (you can have different finish like glossy or mat because they are many on the market) To use a fixative, it's like a spray painting, only little "pression", line by line (so press the spray, do a "line" on top and release) do it again as much as it take for cover all the surface. Turn your drawing at 90° and do it again on all the surface, to be sure it's well sealed. And like every other spray bottle, turn the bottle, and spray in the air for clean the "pipe" of the spray before put away. I hope my explanations are understable and not to messy (english is not my mother tongue, sorry).
@pennycandyys Жыл бұрын
Good advice. From a conservation framing point of view, if you're putting it under glass though, I question the need for fixative. I'm not sure, but I would compare it to watercolor where you do not spray it with fixative, and you want it under glass, preferably UV protected glass like say True View or something like that. If you're selling a 'painting' for hundreds of dollars, then it's worth it. :)

Will be oil pastel painting dry to touch as oil painting after week or two?thanks
@flavie.3826 Жыл бұрын
@@pennycandyys I don't know if it's really necessary, but my point was mainly "If you want to fix it, let it dry first" :o
@flavie.3826 Жыл бұрын
@@iri5505 It really depends of the thickness of your drawing and the oil pastel you use. For example, sennelier's one are very smooth beacause they are very oily, they need more time to dry than mungyo's one. You can gently touch your drawing to see if it's dry (but one/two week seems "short" to me for dry) I don't really know how much time mine take to dry because when I finish it, I place it somewhere and someday I'm like "oh, it's been few weeks, lets check if it's good"
@pennycandyys Жыл бұрын
@@flavie.3826 Yes, good point. From my side, I like to share framing and conservation information because it seems like largely people still don't know much about it. To me, artists who sell their work in particular, should have some knowledge of the subject. So I make a lot of comments to help share some of the information, and it's not even necessarily directed at anyone in particular, but just to get the knowledge out there. :)

9:48 After properly cared with fixative/varnish, it cannot remain sticky, it must be rock hard, even when I use impasto with thick layers or 3D pastel blobs here and there. Don't hesitate to spray it 12 times (thin gentle layers), if needed. With the Talens 060 Varnish one layer is enough to make a parfect finish. Your artwork is fantastic, and a joy to watch your paintings and process videos.

Does the Talens varnish go on after the spray she’s using, or is it enough by itself?

I loved this video so much. Thank you a thousand times. I don't consider myself an artist, but I'm always floating around and I've been in love with oil pastels since I was a little girl and I'm discovering what I can do. Seeing your process is inspiring and meant a lot to me! I have many difficulties, two of them: 1. with regard to drawing itself, how to get depth, learn about colors and how to be able to create layers and colors with small palettes. I would love to know more about your depth techniques with pastel oils and how you go about creating color when you don't have many options! 2. I have the Mungyo professional 36 colors and the Pentel of 50 - but I don't really understand what to achieve with each of them - the pentel is less creamy, but I know it can be useful, it's just frustrating not knowing how to combine with the Mungyo, if I should combine... I would love to know more about the pastel oils you use, what you learned from each one... I think that's it! I can't wait for the next video!

I'm so happy your channel came up on my feed!! I also am in BC, but not on the lower mainland if that's where you are.. I'm a white girl, lol, not Japanese, but I do have somewhat of a fascination with things Japan, for instance I order from ZenMarket, I can't wait till I get to watch the new Studio Ghibli movie, I love Totorro, and I'm watching new Japanese releases on Netflix, etc. :) Growing up it seemed like there was always a dried up box of Reeves oil pastels kicking around, I was always fascinated and wanted to try, but they were so bad! So watching you compose masterpieces is pretty awesome, and I will look forward to watching more of your videos. I've recently been stocking up with watercolor supplies, and I actually bought the Nicker paints, and Muse paper, too. In fact I have a little Totorro painting I need to do, but there's something that keeps getting in my way... Anyway, I think I'm going to have to add some oil pastels next time I place an order, along with a Baren, some acrylic paint, gosh I think I'll be able to open my own store when I get finished, lol.

I use to paint with oil pastels/soft pastels and have been wanting to paint again. Sometimes I would do the underpainting with soft pastels and paint acrylic medium to seal it. Also used watercolor and gouache to start the background at other times. Never had the extensive collection of colors and that was sometimes a frustration but I would work in more limited palettes and buy colors as I needed them. Your paintings are beautiful! Really like your technique of liquifying the colors. Didn’t realize some of the pastel colors are toxic, good to know!
