i feel this. recently one of my fav designers deleted everything on their socials and disappeared for about a year. this is a dude with 250K following, has my dream clients, incredible work. really just my portrait of success in graphic design. i've been feeling incredibly down about my practice so i dm'd him to see what he'd been up to, and if he had any advice. we were going thru the exact same thing. social media (at least the current algorithms) are SO detrimental to mental health as an artist. we have to develop a whole new skill-set to approach it effectively and in a healthy way. but. EVERYONE. is struggling.

Thanks for the insightful story. I think social media has presented alternative means to reach audience, but I think some traditional conventions of being a craftsperson carry more consistency through time. I'm looking for some guidance in convention. Sometimes I've blurred the lines of my online and offline life; in ways that impacted my incentives and led me to alter behavior without self awareness. That's a personal trap that sometimes turns me off from social media.

Glad to see you doing well Robin :) Digital footprint has been a big one for me over the past two years, deleting all my social media, and focusing on growing a local community in physical space has been very rewarding. It is also a challenge to be going against the dominant culture where everyone asks if I have an instagram or somewhere they can view my work. It is slow moving. Very slow. But sustainability, and being uncompromising on my artistic values have been my focus, and I feel happier for it.

Good to hear from you! :) I really resonate with things you say/have said on social media. My boyfriend doesn't have any socials and it's helped open my eyes to my own misuses and confusions around it. I admire your efforts in local community. I'm working to be more active locally as well and find it similarly rewarding. Thanks for sharing your experiences with me; they've helped me be more grounded

Oh my gosh, Robin with dark hair! 😍 I vividly remember following you throughout the different eras of your hair colors, especially when you had light pink to purple highlights. And thank you for the tips! It's so easy to let numbers and comparison, especially follower count or grades, in my case as a student, weigh in on your feelings towards art. I aim to develop my artistic voice during my time in art school and prioritize my craft, as you said. On top of keeping up with the ever-changing algorithm, I'm also figuring out how to make time for artmaking! I think it's incredibly important to take the time to create, instead of just consuming in this rapidly paced digital age.

I've been feeling really jaded lately with social media: the constant comparison to others is so bad somedays. I have been experiencing this phenomenon where I don't want to share my work on social media either since I know other artists will look at it and use it as "inspiration". Sorry to vent, just wondering if anyone else has felt this way and what you did to get over it?

Thank you for sharing. Much needed advice for new artists just out of school, as well as old farts trying to get going again. For what it's worth, i think you have been killing it as an artist. You have a book published, online presence, and following, and your skills are amazing. Maybe you dont have six-figure sales and a fancy NYC gallery, but you're still doing better than most pro artists. Kick ass and cary on, babe!

This video couldn't have a better timing. I just created my yt account and instagram. I had never had social media before and decided to change it as finding the audience locally was really hard here. I could have put my works on selling websites but nobody knew it was there. Thank you for sharing your words of wisdom. It's nice to meet other artists here and I am focusing mostly on that. I am trying not to focus too much on numbers but I feel a tiny sting inside when I see somebody's masterpiece getting just a few likes while another video with a female chest gets hundreds of thousands.

Hullo Robin, I find your attitude and presence simply lovely! Your open and truthful consideration and thoughtful dialog is so impressive. I have enjoyed watching your growth and development for quite a few years now and from what you have shared online I hope you know what an inspiration you are for so many others, well done! I did notice your hair, but I am often unsure how much someone who is not in your personal space should even say you look lovely or gosh I liked the lavender hair more? I am just going to say I like your new do! If your happy that is the most important aspect to a new hair do. I have had my wife cutting my hair for years now, as long as she is not ashamed of being seen with me in public, it is a win for me. While I still have hair that is, most of my family loses their locks even earlier than at my present age, so I am ahead of the curve! But I just want to say thanks for continuing to create and put thoughtful and considerate videos out here for so many others to grow, Thank You.

Talking about online hygiene, I was browsing the internet randomly about a year ago and came across an article (I think it was on some university website) with you in one of the photos. The article was about the teacher iirc, and it didn't mention your name so it was just a stroke of luck that I saw it and recognised you haha.

Will there be prints for some of the new artwork too? I love some of them, but sadly I can't afford them right now :( "Utah Skyline": very interesting with those higher clouds on top "Imaginary": nice green, gives it a very different feel compared to the others "Driving home" is cool too, those straight lines are breaking up the picture nicely. Not 100% sure about the straight lines on the moon, but I think it kind of creates a nice balance.

Maybe one day! ha Black is covering some wildly bad home-hair-dye-jobs at the moment, so it may be a good while before light hair is achievable again X) mostly I'm just trying to get back length

@@RobinSealark I believe I also commented on hair color, BUT YOU decide on what is best for you and your hair health! I rather like the dark look and Black is another color that can be hard for upkeep! Stay healthy and happy, that is better advice.
