Been a while since I've been here, I wound up buying a 1982 MCI MC9 Custom Coach back in January, come to find out it was their Show/Demo coach, made specifically for taking to shows, the first one that they built for show only, before that, they would have to commandeer customer coaches for taking to a FMCA show. I have a lot to learn about this beast, but she is really in good shape for 40 years old, and has a rebuilt 8V92 Turbo in it. I just drove it from Texas to Nappanee Indiana for my first bus rally, with only 5 hours experience behind the wheel, made it back without a scratch. Videos of it, on my channel. Keep up the good work, and making these informative videos.

Interesting to see the comparison. I didn’t realize your RV had air over hydraulic brakes. My 2001 Marquis has air disc brakes on all three axles. I added the Steer Safe system to my Magnum chassis and that made a huge difference. It’s funny that they still used the 98 Navigator headlights in 05. Beaver must have bought all the old stock from Ford. 🤣 I just put two coats of the clear linoleum floor tile sealer on my roof and that seems to do well with keeping the chalking down for a couple years.

I could be wrong but I believe the air over hydraulics thing is a way of getting around certain CDL requirements on commercial chassis. I know they're not required for an RV but the same chassis was probably used on commercial vehicles as well

Thanks for this great video. I'm looking very hard at a 2004 Beaver Patriot Thunder. Thanks to this video (17:15) I know to ask if the recall was done or if the entire compressor was replaced. You recommended replacing the compressor. Would that solve the fire concerns? It seems like I remember you saying in another video, that you would consider a residential replacement versus replacing the compressor or the 4-door RV fridge. I want the residential due to the extra room and better performance. Do you have a rough estimate of the compressor cost and the labor to install it? How about a rough comparison to replacing it with a residential fridge. In the 2004 I'm looking at, the fridge and a missing washer/dryer are the only major upgrades I will need. Since the 2004 Beaver I'm looking at has the Roadmaster Chassis also, does that help with being able to find parts and service techs to work on it outside of OR?

Pre-def is going to be cheaper to run, more fuel efficient and approximately 900 lbs lighter. The pre-def is more reliable, easier to maintain and one doesn't have to buy cat piss to make it run. There are no regen cycles and other quirks to deal with. I might be wrong but I think pre-def has more power. California appears to be refusing to license pre-def coaches. We can't tell of it means even those already registered in the State or just those trying to register in California for the first time. What CARB is doing remains a mystery. Therefore, expect to see more pre-def coaches coming to market escaping California regulations. The complexities and added expenses and damn near displacing a half a ton of cargo are what bothered me. FWIW, CAT still makes the C-12 engine. It's only for off road use which means that CAT put their best sensors in their C-12. The C-12 is arguably the best engine ever made for a DP, certainly it was the best engine Beaver ever used. The C-12 remains in production; we just can't have one on the road in an RV.

Modern coaches with their Independent Front Suspensions really do maneuver better. But they can't beat the C-12 with an Allison 4000 or even get the quality of woods used in the old rigs. Brakes are big differences. The 1998 and 1999 PT's brakes were not as good as the air over hydraulic brakes of the 2000-2002. Of course, the full air brakes used on their top of the line Marquis were a no compromise build. BTW, James' particular PT has had its water manifold upgraded by the previous owner. James has every reason to gloat over his find. His 455 was the world's fastest production RV until approximately five years ago. Speed often equals efficiency. I talked to one retired RV salesman who claimed that his old PT was clocked by radar at 147 MPH at the bottom of a hill. The manual says that the cruise control works up to 117 MPH. James' coach has been extremely well cared for and came with a lot of modifications. I have done a few mods on my PT 425 that James' has yet to discover and "borrow." [Teaser! ;-P ]

Beaver! Made some basement A/C two-stage compressor models under the floor in the basement. They take up an entire storage bay but they use full sized replaceable house A/C filters and are extremely quiet with no water trails marring up the beauty of the roof and sides. However, those are not easy to maintain or replace. $

My father had 7 motorhomes in his lifetime, 4 gassers, and 3 pushers. His first pusher had air over hydraulic brakes. He kept it for a year and traded it in on an American Eagle. Our Wanderlodge is full air disc brakes all around. Stops fine.
@DOCKent-33392 ай бұрын
Air over hydraulic were a vast improvement over the earlier brakes, significantly superior. There are trade offs with any and every coach. Consider this: A PT with air over hydraulics listed at $330,000 at the time when a Marquis with full air brakes was $500,000+.
@DOCKent-33392 ай бұрын
@@DLTJR1959 Mine stops fine. Nevertheless, full air brakes is one reason to upgrade--if one can afford the rig.
