Did internet access on your Mac break on 30th September 2021? Here's the fix!

One of the internet's big root certificates, IdenTrust DST Root CA X3, expired on 30th September 2021. If you're running an old version of Mac OS X on your iMac, Mac Mini, Mac Pro or MacBook, you may have found that a LOT of websites no longer work.
Here's how to fix it.

Not mentioned in the video: Firefox apparently has its own stash of root certificates. If Chrome or Safari won't let you access the Let's Encrypt website, but you have Firefox, try using/installing/updating that, then accessing the site that way.

This was exactly what happened to me, I have a very old MacBook Pro, it works brilliantly and was the very best I could afford back in 2009 - I've switched the hard drive to solid state and that's all, I thought I was sunk when I got this error and couldn't upgrade the OS. You saved this trusty machine and I can hopefully carry on using it for another 10 years!

I'm using a secondhand 2012 MBP with 8GB RAM and SSD. My old 2010 MBP (bought new) also has 8GB RAM but hard disk instead of SSD, as I swapped the SSD to the 2013 model. That's still knocking around as a spare.

I even inquired with my hosting provider twice trying to work out what it was thinking my domains had been compromised. Used this video to fix my friends laptop today, info was spot on. Thanks for being clear and to the point. I couldn't visit the certificate site on Safari because of the warning, but was able to open it on Chrome after clicking the "advanced" button on the warning page and clicking on through to the website.

Many thanks for the video. I especially appreciate the link to download the certificate file. I could not find it anywhere until I used your address link. I was able to fix my sister's El Capitan expired certificate (9/2021). One day I needed to use her laptop and saw all the error links, she told me she had not used it in a long long time. So I told her it was time I fixed it and I did. Spent 4 hours trying to first, identify the issue and next find a video that explained it. The only problem is that most of the videos are for Windows and I wished there was a video for Apple software. I was able to navigate around to where I found the Keychain directory. Thanks again.

Awsm, thank you! On my Mac, when I double clicked the ISRG Root X1 pem file, Keychain opened with an error message... “System Roots keychain cannot be modified". However, with Keychain open, I could then drag the pem file into Keychain (from, in my case my Desktop) and proceed exactly as outlined in your video. Thank you for helping to keep the mighty El Capitan alive!

Yep. System Roots is read-only, but System can be unlocked.

Brilliant. Thank you so much. I followed the steps to fix this on 20th October (after 20 frustrating days) and I actually found I was able to go around the letsencrypt website by clicking the ADVANCED button. In the video at 1:12 you can see there's no option to proceed to the website anyway, but when I tried it just now I was able to proceed to the website. Maybe something changed, but it seems you no longer need to go through the process of downloading on another computer.
