9:30 I've always thought that that was just pure, blind luck. The pause was the Doctor trying to compose himself for the step forward to what was almost essentially certain death (but it's not like he could've gone back the way he came either).

I love Rose's reactions in this episode. Of her being overwhelmed by the aliens and her realising that everyone's dead.

I believe this episode exists to show us how The Doctor gets took know and basically vetted his companions. Are they accepting of other life forms or are they judgemental and racist. Are they brave and resourceful. Do they blame him when bad things happen and launch into a huge diatribe about all of it being his fault. If the companion passes the test then they are on board. There's a look he gives Rose when she mentions that someone is blue....and also when they are sitting on the steps together talking...he's assessing her. Also, she's assessing him and deciding in her mind what she's going to do. When he programs her phone makes it possible for her to phone home, he gives her a gift...safety, kindness, understanding how close she is to her mother. Women like that. Also, the chips thing...their first "date." In the last ending episode when she's sitting in the pizza parlor with Mickey and Mom and it's so mundane, like when she was riding on the bus eating chips, she's ranting against how boring and mundane her like would be again if she were stuck on Earth. They don't understand at all because they have no frame of reference. She has. She wants to get back to the adrenaline rush of traveling with The Doctor. Many episodes later when Mickey meets his parallel and starts pitching in and fighting the Cybermen, then he starts to understand and winds up with badass Martha. Rose can't go back to the dullness of her previous life. Dalek Review, when the young man was flirting with Rose ....she's a flirty girl and can't do that with The Doctor. Here she has a chance to be a bit flirty and girly. Just kind of shows another side of her that's still there, in a good way. Her relationship with The Doctor is much more serious and meaningful. Tennant once said, I paraphrase, that her flirty eyes have buttered many parsnips. Yup. Here she gets to put them to use. When you're ina bad situation it's never a bad idea to charm one of your captors and pull them over a bit to your side. I love that episode because there's so much to think about in it. Maybe if Robert Sherman wrote a few episodes for 2020 he could salvage what, to me, is an awful season. I still don't give a darn if any of them live or die. I also think that the black woman who played the new incarnation of The Doctor scared the crap out of Jodie. Aheblooked as if she were going to be eaten by a lion. Honestly, I'd like to see a few episodes with, sorry I don't know her name, the Black actress who played The Doctor, actually play The Doctor. She has a presence and when she says I'm The Doctor...I believe her because she believes it. She's commanding and awesome. Thank you for all this analysis. I've learned tons. I used to teach Language Arts and theater history classes but I always learn a lot from you. Harry, you're terrific!!!! Going to listen to the Harry Potter series too. I've read all the novels and seen all the movies and I sure do want to know what you have to say!!!!

The scene with the Doctor and the fan: He closes his eyes to listen to the rotation of the fan and maybe to feel it move past him (I don't know) - timing the intervals to calculate a rhythm/pattern. It is more reliable than his eyes, which takes a few milliseconds to feed his brain the information. And maybe seeing the fan would cause him to hesitate, and get chopped. Not magic, just hyper-Timelord-focus. And probably only there to look cool. (I speculate. But Eccleston is my Doctor, so I'll argue anything in his favour.)

You do actually have handles on aircrafts that can open the doors to the plane; one opens it normally for when you're on the ground and the other is for in case of emergencies, although many now have safety features that lock them unless the sensors detect the plane is at a safe enough altitude to allow the door to unlock, thus avoiding loss of cabin pressure mid-flight

The bit with the fans to me always made sense because the Doctor is a Time Lord. It's in the name. It would make sense that, with their mastery of and deep connection to time that they would be able to precisely time their movements down to the millisecond, and that is what allowed the Doctor to perfectly pass through the fan

Okay, for what you said about humans (even though you don't want me to): The show likes to explore the idea of humans touching every corner of the universe, loving the thrill of exploration. This idea is mainly apparent in The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit. Remember when Donna asked the Doctor if humans are "survivors or a virus"? That is the biggest human, most consistent theme of the show. So, although it may bot be logical that we would be there at the end if time itself, I think Davies merely wanted to explore this philosophy

9:20 I think that, after what mrs Fangorn said to him about the time war, he had a moment of suicidal depression, all his survival instincts going out the window, and he just didn't care if he lived or died. That's how I've always interpreted it, at least. Either that or his thought process was as follows: "If I don't do this, everyone dies. If I try, I will probably die, but I could save everyone. No More."

I can explain the part with the fans thanks to the official Doctor Who character encyclopedia book there's a section that talks about the 9th doctor that talks about his special abilities and it says "Incredible Timing- he once managed to step through the blades of a massive spinning fan" so to all the comments saying its him felling the universe no its just a special ability thx to the DW character encyclopedia.

When the Doctor noclips through the fan he's just taking a chance and walking forwards since there's no way to time his step to walk through the fan; there's an equal chance of success at any moment, so he just takes a gamble.

I'm in the process of building a theory about the time sense powers used at the fan... I believe that the doctor can sense the right time to do something coz he is a timelord. He has an innate timey wimey sense. This functions similarly to how Eccleston/Jesus in The Second Coming is told to do stuff by God... he only knows in the moment he has to do something. My current guess is that this power protects only the doctor's life - not his even his companions are protected by it. That would imply that all timelords have this spidey sense superpower... but i guess most timelords haven't had much cause to get used to it and be able to channel it in necessary situations. I think the companions are protected instead by the tardis... theories will develop in time. When I've fleshed out 10 theories i'll put them into a youtube video...

hola chico - good to see your boredom hasn't stopped you helping with mine - have you seen my ufo video?? 😎 that aside, when the doctor's walking through the spinning fans he is "seeing time" and integrating with the moment (note - not THE moment) that he is in so he knows exactly when to move - a bit like dicky bow when he throws the Apple™ in Amys first episode to stop the accident, but a bit more intense. Also wouldn't they normally be evacuating from the other side therefore avoiding the fans under normal circumstances? In defence of Billiex Pip - she was being shagged at the time by a guy with Absenth for sperm so probably couldn't move never mind act half the time AND she stopped "singing". At the time the spider things were quite a draw to the episode for people as the CGI wasn't bad for its time either, especially when compared to it's contemporaries on TV here in the UK. So - you doing Rocky Horror or am I going to have to hunt you down - in drag? 🐩

i like how the year is stated to be 5.5/apple/26, since it shows how, how we say the year has changed dramatically. at this moment in time we can say what year we're talking about by saying how many years it was since the birth of christ, and then saying: AD, or how many years it is before the birth of christ, and then saying: BC. however, ever since i was 10 when i first saw the episode, i was always interested in knowing exactly when and why we stopped saying "(a number) AD" and why there's an apple in there. what did we originally say pear, and then there was an apple apocalypse so we all it apple. also, in new earth, when they visit 5000000023 THEY CALL IT 5000000023!!
