Racism and fascism are the mainstay of American politics and culture - oh and don't forget endless war all paid for by unlimited credit because of the petrodollar and US ties to Saudi Arabia. The scene was very unfaithful to history. She wasn't the only one arrested, and it was planned because a few months earlier a different woman was arrested but she didn't take a case to the Supreme court because she was a single mother and had darker skin so the NAACP didn't think her case would have been as successful. Also, Rosas accent wasn't that great. Her acting was great, but her accent didn't sound "Alabama" at all.

They usually start with a Present Day episode only when introducing new companions. When you look at New Earth, Deep Breath, Asylum of the Daleks and The Magician's Apprentice as first episodes of their season all are Future or Past stories given they're carrying over the same companion.
@friday64486 жыл бұрын
I just want to point out that I never said that it has to be in that order. I personally think that the first adventure should be of the home time of the new companion, and the next two would then work around that. So if the companion is from the past then it should be Past, Present, Future. And if the companion is from the future then it should be Future, Past, Present. But since NuWho is obsessed with having companions from the present then the repeating formula is Present, Future, Past.

The bus driver, James Blake, was not portrayed accurately in the episode. According to the available historical accounts, he was not the diehard racist we saw in the show. Rather, he was just a guy doing his job, which included enforcing the unjust rules of the racist society in which he lived. The episode would have taught us a lot more about the era had the writers portrayed him accurately; it was not the minority of rabid bigots who kept segregation alive for so long, but the complacent majority that just accepted the way things were.

To be fair, he isn't exactly portrayed as a diehard. From his dialogue he's just someone who accepts things as they are and doesn't respond well to any challenges to the status quo. The same way many conservative Christians don't necessarily hate gay people but get up in arms about the issue of gay marriage. It's easy to assume that he's a horrible diehard racist, but the actual text of the episode doesn't necessarily portray him as all that bad.
@Martiandawn6 жыл бұрын
That isn't the way I remember his portrayal in the episode, Jake, but I will withhold judgement until I have a chance to watch it again. With respect to your point about conservative Christians, I don't see that as a comparable issue. Conservative Christians' opposition to gay marriage is not because they "don't respond well to challenges to the status quo;" they reject the concept because it directly contradicts their world view. I don't agree with their views on the matter of gay marriage, but I would not dismiss their reaction as mere stodginess, as you seem to be implying.

Back then it was a choice, now it's a compulsion from the curse. Although Jodie in an interview said she wants to be the Doctor for a long time, but then again for some people 4 years in the same role is quite a long time. If the rumours are true that we won't get series 12 until spring 2019 (apparently it's a better time of year for the show and would get even better ratings than the ones they're getting this series) then we're one step closer to the Christopher Curse striking again. Like isn't it a bit weird though that all 3 actors did 3 series AND spread those 3 over 4 years. Tennant had a year of specials, Series 7 was spread over 2 years and Capaldi took a year off.

There seem to be two major problems with this era of Dcotor who, and they overlap. 1:The Doctor is now in charge. The Doctor - at least since Troughton - has always been an anti-authoritarian figure, thumbing his nose at those in power, and generally wrecking havoc in any society that sought to impose order. (Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy are the most extreme examples of this) This applies equally to the Tardis, the Doctor has typically chosen companions who will defy his authority and talk back to him. Whitaker by contrast is firmly in charge of her team, telling them what's what, when they use their initiative it's at her encouragement, and she gives them a nice pat on the head afterwards. 2.The show is ridiculously heavy handed. This week we learned Racism Is Bad. Before that we learned that tricking a child into throwing themself out of a tree and breaking half their limbs to theach them that "you can't trust anyone but yourself" is Very Bad Parenting. Before that we had the vital moral lesson that killing people, ripping out their teeth and wearing them on your face is A Mean Thing to Do. Presumably next week the Doctor will take her companions to the woods to show them that This is Where the Bears Shit. Both issues have a common theme Authoritarianism. Dcotor Who has done politics in the past, and has usually tipped leftwards, but it has asked tough questions, shied away from moral certainty and let the audience make its own mind up. Now instead we have an all-wise morally perfect leader, laying down the law. This runs aganst the subversive tone, not just of Doctor Who, but of British sci-fi in general. Someone should remind Chibnal that the Doctor is an anarchist, not a communist!
@ThePonderer6 жыл бұрын
1) is hardly a problem. The Doctor being in charge, and having companions who follow their lead rather than push against them, isn’t remotely a new or unfounded dynamic. 2) is a ridiculous reach. The “lessons” you pose for episodes one and two are only “moral lessons” because YOU chose to frame them that way. The Tree thing and the Teeth thing aren’t the show trying to soapbox about morals, their character details/backstory. Portraying those things as bad has not a single thing to do with authoritarianism, or even with trying to convey an overt message beyond “these characters are messed up and that informs why they’re not good people”. This complaint is downright silly, and your arms must hurt after stretching *that* hard.
@ThePonderer6 жыл бұрын
Laurence Winch-Furness also, “anarchist?” “Shied away from moral certainty?” Have you just been watching a different show to everyone else? This program (and especially the Doctor as a character) has NEVER shied away from the idea of moral certainty- that some things are Just Right and some things are Just Wrong. And the Doctor’s guiding philosophy has NEVER been anarchism. I’m beginning to think you stumbled in here from an alternate universe where Doctor Who is nothing like what it is here.
@CaptainGrue6 жыл бұрын
@@ThePonderer The Doctor's definitely no anarchist (he bloody worked for UNIT) but he does have strong anti-authoritarian sentiments, rooted in the many many quibbles he's had with the Time Lords. I also think there's a fair share of episodes new and old that work to pose moral questions without giving a straight forward answer. The Curse of Peladon, The Sensorites, The Beast Below, Dalek off the top of my head. Family of Blood has Tennant do some pretty awful stuff. Capaldi's arc was centred around the idea that he might not be doing the 'right' thing and episodes like Into the Dalek reflect this. In fact I would even say that Rosa supports this motif, and the question of whether or not it was right for them not to intervene adds weight to the story. While The Doctor's companions tend to misbehave and wander off, it just seems like a trope for the sake of a making characters do stupid things and limits the scope of characters you could write for the show. In any case, I'm sure we'll see what both of you are talking about as the Doc does make the jump between strategist team captain and teenage rebel
@ThePonderer6 жыл бұрын
Of course the show has tackled issues with no clear moral answer, but I think there's a fine line between that and avoiding the very idea that moral certainties exist. The Doctor as a character, and the show for the most part, have very solid morals and believe in mostly well-defined rights and wrongs that it wants the audience to pick up on and adopt.
@DarkLordoftheMeme6 жыл бұрын
@@CaptainGrue I was using the term "anarchist" in a pretty colloquial sense, not as a strict definition of the Doctor's philosophy. (although McCoy steared pretty close to it) Pertwee worked for Unit, he was probably the least rebelious Doctor, but he still had massive issues with the Brigadeer's authority. There are plenty of examples of things being definitely *wrong* in the whoniverse, but but far fewer examples of things being defintely right. The consistent morals of the show have definitely been very broad, and the best episodes have left questions open ended, consider the Doctor's classic "do I have the right" speech in Genesis of the Daleks. Having multiple wirters put their own spin on the story helps add nuance, since each writer brings their own perspective. Looking at the lineup for this serries it seems Chibnal's name is on nearly every episode, so we're likely to see a single "party line" being trotted out.

For most of the episode I thought the guy from the future was actually just a Time Cop who was set to watch Rosa and make sure everything went smoothly without any outside interference - in other words, this was just his current beat. He picked up on the Tardis' energy just as the Doctor picked up on his and they were thus getting distracted from something else that was about to knock the timeline off-track. Hell, the fact he didn't attack Rosa and that his weapon only time-dislocated things/people (to say maybe, an interrogation room in his own time period) kept me thinking that was the case for most of the episode. Then he turned out to be just some random racist from the future. Uh... okay. That was disappointing. I really did wish they kept it as a pure historical. I miss those. That said, I didn't mind the issue of her mentioning she was a cop. At that point I think Rosa recognized she was not from the U.S. and was from a nation with much more tolerant laws.

Ingredients 135g/4¾oz plain flour 1 tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 2 tbsp caster sugar 130ml/4½fl oz milk 1 large egg, lightly beaten 2 tbsp melted butter (allowed to cool slightly) or olive oil, plus extra for cooking To serve Maple syrup Butter Recipe tips Method Sift the flour, baking powder, salt and caster sugar into a large bowl. In a separate bowl or jug, lightly whisk together the milk and egg, then whisk in the melted butter. Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture and, using a fork, beat until you have a smooth batter. Any lumps will soon disappear with a little mixing. Let the batter stand for a few minutes. Heat a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and add a knob of butter. When it's melted, add a ladle of batter (or two if your frying pan is big enough to cook two pancakes at the same time). It will seem very thick but this is how it should be. Wait until the top of the pancake begins to bubble, then turn it over and cook until both sides are golden brown and the pancake has risen to about 1cm (½in) thick. Repeat until all the batter is used up. You can keep the pancakes warm in a low oven, but they taste best fresh out the pan. Serve with lashings of real maple syrup and extra butter if you like.

This really just seemed like a left over script from Timeless. Swap Rittenhouse for the guy from the future to try and change history and that’s it. They were also never in danger as he wasn’t allowed to kill anyone. Timeless did a similar episode to do with Woman’s rights in set in 1919.
@notAshildr6 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I thought. It felt like Timeless. White supremacist wanting to stop histoy from happening, and a group of time travellers who just so happen to portray the same ethnic groups as in Timeless try to stop him. You'd only have to cut the scene about the neuro blocker and wouldn't have to change even one more line to adapt it. I don't actuallly think the episode even works with Doctor Who's established time travel rules. If that point in time isn't a fixed one, I don't know what is. We have also already established that the butterfly effect doesn't exist in Doctor Who, because "History wants to happen". Every ripple will smooth itself out in Doctor Who timetravel, whereas in Timeless every ripple could have catastrophic effects.

Personally, I thought it was a good episode but not great, primarily because the story of Rosa Parks is one that I don't think any show can do true justice to in 45 minutes. That said, what they did create was good and solid, if a little clunky at times, with a welcome return to Doctor Who being educational as well as entertainment (the idea when it was first created). What I find most praiseworthy is how the Doctor and companions interact with these historical events. It's pretty much standard within the show that the Doctor will jump into historical events feet first, directly interfering (and sometimes even becoming the motivating factor). Here, our merry band of time travelers work subtly, often behind the scenes to ensure that events unfold as they should with very little direct involvement (other than occupying seats on a bus). In that way, it reminded me strongly of the Deep Space Nine episode Trials and Tribbleations, where the future crew work quietly in the background of events to ensure everything happens as it should, with minimal interference from them. It's a breath of fresh air next to Doctor Who's usual approach to historical events and works really well with this particular story, as having the Doctor in anyway become influential on Rosa's decisions would detract from her decision to stay where she was. Now, this approach isn't going to work for every story, but I'm glad they branched out from the feet first style for once. It helps the episodes message greatly - as does the song. Bluntly, you really missed the point there. The lyrics fit because by sitting down Rosa was standing up for her rights and the rights of all black people, saying "no, I won't move, I have the right to sit here as much as any white person". That's why the song is there. It's a metaphor for the impact of her choice and action. Personally, I'd give it a 7.5 or 8 - good, but not brilliant.

Once more, the plot makes no sense at all. The bad guy wants to change history. Well, why not sending Rosa Parks right to the 57th century with his gun-toy ? Problem solved ! The Doctor wants to stop the bad guy. Well, why not capturing him, instead of letting him go ? The Doc paralysed a man with one finger in last week's episode, for god's sake ! Problem solved too ! Instead, they all make scoobidoo-ish plans like if it was a (very) bad Sliders episode. This is exactly what Chibnall's writing is always about : amateurish plot holes "but let's make the characters running all over the place so that the viewer will not have time to think". This is poor, this is wrong, this is not pro at all. But the worst here is that everyone in the fifties is written like a dumbshit, including (and this si so wrong on every level) Rosa Parks. Yeah well, can you tell us all about you, where you live, where you work, it's for a Tombola. "Oh yeah whatever I believe you despite the fact you're not talking to anyone else". Ok, then, I've followed you by night but it's because I sympathize with you. "Oh yeah, whatever, come in and make some coffee". I need my coat to be repaired because it's pretty much alive to me and I can't live without it. "Oh yeah, whatever, you're the lady from the fake tombola who asked your friend to follow me by night and now you're bullshiting me about your coat and talking to me as if I were five year old but it's okay, I believe you because I'm plain stupid". This is a shame. No, people in the fifties were no more retards than you and me. They were not gullible little childs-at-heart. And the fight against racism was a collective fight : you can't say it's the doing of one people only without spitting on the rest of the community's actions... and basically, it's what this épisode do. So yeah, it sucks. It's even worse than that.

I thought the episode was fine, the dialog was entertaining and the companion moments were great, but I couldn't help thinking that many people were going to hate it. Doctor Who is what it is, so episodes being bad don't bother me like it does other people. Going to a time period where the racism is not only overt, but a real setting not just a Sci-Fi setting where aliens are abstract bigots, that people would accuse this of being the most "SJW" of any Doctor Who episode yet. Surveys show a majority of people hate all the focus current on "social justice". However, it seems people are more positive about this episode than I thought. One could say the episode is being too preachy, and it clearly has a message. I don't think we can look at history and say the methods people employed against racism were not disruptive. Marches and sermons and sit-ins; Eisenhower calling in the national guard to force de-segregation of schools. If the internet existed back then, it would be an even bigger dumpster fire. With current events, I would imagine that people are seeking escapist entertainment to turn their minds away. I don't condone racism, but I know people who are racist, members of my family included. There are people today who want to turn back to clocks and bring back segregation. Some even argue, some minorities included, that segregation would be better overall for society. So yeah, I'm sure this episode is a mixed bag. I was expecting the backlash to be as big as the one against The Last Jedi. Some will like it, many will hate it.

Completely agree, that song was an utter cringefest. Was like watching a bad soap opera. They could have played sombre music or nothing and really carried the weight of that moment in history but instead turned it into something that was meant to get the viewers up and applaud like maniacs whilst crying big crocodile tears. I left my living room rolling my eyes the moment the credits rolled. Dunno whose idea it is to keep putting shitty pop music into Doctor Who but they need to be fired. First the trailer music and now this. Maybe next they'll do a gay episode and have a years and years song play.

I think the 'present, future and past' formula is because the companion wants to go to the future to see the changes to there norm, then see a historical figure. I slightly disagree with one point, that being the racism not feeling OTT but this is only for one occasion. I'm pointing to the bus driver being told a sit in is going to happen so he goes "not on my watch" here. I find it very hard to believe that a bus driver would care about his job so much that he would abandon a day off so that he could go back to bus driving, I doubt that the satisfaction that character would get from putting black people in their place (no that is not me talking, that's from the perspective of the character) would outweigh the good feels of a fishing trip regardless of two people's attempts at meddling with it. Another issue I have with the episode is that the scene behind the bins and right at the end in the tardis make the episode feel like an educational history video. You know the type, where they have characters act out something and then turn to the audience and have a monologue about life in those times. It feels off to me but what do I know, I failed GCSE English. Actually have a second issue with the video, that being Ryan having the time gun thingy suddenly, that's OK in my eyes. I know that Chekhov's gun is a thing but I don't think that the time gun needed to be set up that explicitly for it to pay off and in fact it shows weakness in Ryan's character as he is told by the doctor not to play with it because it's bad tech yet he goes against that to beat the space racist.

One such person said that doctor who shouldn't tackle these issues and stick to time traveling fun which I completely disagree with. I think it's self explanatory that doctor who is more than that. With its target demographic, it is important for doctor who to raise awareness of these issues and I'm happy if it tried to raise more through time.

Would've been sweet if at the end of the episode. The Doctor took the TARDIS team onto a large transport vessel named "The Rosa." A vessel of many races treated in equal seating arrangements and respect while traveling the stars. Showing how an impact can spread that far. I mean, sounds better than a rock that someone can easily miss or see float into a black hole. Or a hub world planet where everyone race treats each other equally. Which could then lead into the comeback of the Daleks, a race of alien tanks that despise all life but their own?
