If your body is hold too tight (Which is what is implied was Ruby's case inside the bass), even if your nose can reach a source of air, you won't be able to breath as your lungs are enabled to expand. She was essentially suffocating as she tried to breath, trying to pock her nose out of the bass as her body was compressed inside the instrument, giving her a pretty horrible end if not for the Beatles.

Such a great review- you've hit on all the points that exasperated and confused me! I have no idea what has happened to the writing, editing or pacing, but it's so rushed and shallow and jarring. We don't get any relationship development, we get shallow side characters, no meaningful quiet moments, loads of suffocating close up shots, constant loud music, a Doctor who just runs away. I don't know who Ruby is supposed to be than a generic bubbly companion.

These Davis and Moffat episodes so far reeked of a need to workshop their scripts, might not have improved with the writers they know, but there was so much room for improvement on what were an functional basis. Davis clearly wanted a musical episode and he could have just done it, dozens of musicians coming together, striving to keep alive originality, willing to die for the few seconds of shrieking their freedom into the void in hopes of passing the flame to the next person willing to bear the weight and consequence, all culminating in McCartney and Lennon playing an expression of the human spark of creativity to seal away the Maestro. Or at least have Ruby's piano playing being noticed by more than just a few people in nearby apartments with one dying inconsequentially and unheard while playing her own piano, what's the point of aping the Beatle's rooftop concert, performed for many dozens of people milling about the street below and rooftops nearby before being silence, only to give us 4-6 people reacting, they had access to a whole dance troupe for the Twist. Either of those scenarios would have left the Earth with the possibility of knowing and having experienced music, instead we have one where the world has been traumatized for several decades to have no access to music theory.

Both RTD and Moffat's episodes have this sort of... Weird ways to resolve the core problem? They too somehow refuse to go deeper into the themes, be it ethical or emotional (Mundy's almost bf dies and they forget about it in like 10 seconds). It's honestly kinda concerning to me, and it reeks of Disney

"I can't fight this. Last time I had to give it everything to win. I had to rip my soul in half. I can't do that to myself again..." So... Bi-Generation is now some horrific, traumatic exercise that The Doctor can't bear to ever do again? What? It was 3 episodes ago. When it happened, The Doctors were jubilant. Happy. Skipping and dancing with each other. Which would suggest the concept wasn't initially thought through and now, 3 episodes later, RTD needs it to mean something different and has been forced to already retcon how bi-generation works and what it is to suit this episodes needs and well... that's really just a bit rubbish isn't it?

the whole pronoun thing: elephant in the room like you said, it suits Jinx’s character far better than Rose purely because it feels like such an easy ‘no you’re wrong’ moment. not only that but having the random unexplained occurrence of this very obviously ‘beyond our understanding of the world’ person be reduced to a tiny very specific correction is quite funny characterisation. it makes what they’re doing seem so mundane and little to them, even though it’s very clearly just left this man gobsmacked and panicked. still, would rather have it not come up at all but…

For me this didnt properly feel like an episode that should have been third in the season. Same with Space Babies tbh - which felt more like generic filler we would have later on, just to build up the amount of episodes. I feel like the main issue here is that there has been so much time since the Giggle, that the whole Toymaker plot point feels disjointed to me. But well. Loved Hera's performance here though, Maestro felt as imposing as Toymaker and as ridiculous. Pretty much the main good pont of this episode, which overall was meh. I rarely like episodes in past - especially the ones in such recent past. And I have no actual care about the Beatles, so this was a whatever storyline. The time travelling contrast of destroyed world was, however the good moment I waited for - it totally felt like when Rose saw Earth being swallowed by the Sun. Which is unfortunate that this is third episode, but oh well (which is weird, because that part I would like to have earlier, but the whole villain plot point for me needed to be later in the season).

I'm not sure how true this is, but I'm sure I saw somewhere that this was originally going to be episode 7 with Boom being the second episode (apparently Moffatt thought it wouldn't work as Ruby would never stay with the doctor if that was their second adventure). So that could be why the whole 'you never hide' thing was done. It would have meant they'd have had another 6 on screen adventures before this one. Again, not sure if it's true, but it's been rattling in my head

My issue with the pronouns bit in this episode is that it just doesn't come off a remotely natural interaction at all. I couldn't feasibly see anyone looking at Maestro and assuming "he" off the bat, but also, you wouldn't say "who is he?" In this scenario. You'd either say "who's this?" Or given you're talking across this person, you'd say "who are you?" There's absolutely nothing wrong with them pointing out the pronouns and sticking to them, but it felt a little bit too "SEE LOOK WE'RE DOING THE PRONOUNS ARENT WE DOING THE GOOD THING?" And it does stick out like a sore thumb in an otherwise quite interesting and menacing interaction

I understand finding Rose's dialogue in the first special cringe, it relies on tired, overdone trans stereotypes/jokes with the whole "did you just assume pronouns" thing, I don't think it was done mockingly but it was far from the representation I would have hoped for. But Maestro having to explain the concept of they/them pronouns to a man in 1925 England is not unrealistic, nor did they do it in a preachy way. Just jumping in to say: 1: The tritone was never banned by the church, this is a commonly believed myth. Tritones are very important in religious music history and indeed all western music history. Although it's okay to concede it to the writers of this episode as a little tidbit. 2: The idea of there being a "secret chord" is absolutely ridiculous. All possible combinations of notes are accounted for in music theory, particularly in Jazz theory where using obtuse chord extensions is par for the course. 3. The banishing chord is I think a Cadd9 Which is like... It's just a chord. It's a basic chord.
@JStorkey66 ай бұрын

@Longshanks16906 ай бұрын
While there were undoubtedly some writing contrivances such as Ruby and the Doctor being able to get into the building with no difficulty - or even the fact that there is still a recording studio at all in a world devoid of music - or how Maestro used “Henry Arbinger” before the lost chord was discovered in the first place, or that the Beatles discovered the piano and knew to play the exact right tune and not just walk on past the floating notes in the air, I have to say that I really did enjoy this episode. It comes down to two essential factors for me. The first is the cafeteria scene. The way they talk about music in a world that doesn’t understand its value was so beautifully worded, and so poignant. It was really the first moment I believed Ncuti was the Doctor. The actors playing the Beatles as well were phenomenal in communicating this outward apathy while also showing they knew something was wrong. I would also say the rooftop piano scene added into this as just a beautiful scene that didn’t technically add a little but was still moving and powerful. This episode knows how to hit the right emotional spots. The other is Maestro. This was a genuinely terrifying villain both in terms of its presentation but also because of what it wants. The problem with a lot of godlike characters is that they want to destroy but have no clue why or what they’ll do after but Maestro doesn’t have that. Maestro knows that what it wants is the natural music of the universe, devoid of the expression of anyone else which naturally comes from music, it’s only their music from then on. Monsoon absolutely kills it in this role and makes the episode one of the best DW has had in a long, long time. BUT… while I enjoyed Always A Twist in isolation, it is undeniably a bop, it clashed so, SO hard with the otherwise more serious tone of the episode. Maybe if Maestro wasn’t the only one singing it would have been more fitting but as it stands, it’s painfully out of place, which sucks because it is a good song and that is being overshadowed by how it was mishandled. Was this episode flawed? Yes. It is kind of absurd how much the Beatles were marketed to only be barely in two scenes. But does it make up for that with some stellar sets, music, philosophical concepts and acting? Absolutely. It is a major step up from the episodes before and after it, a great episode imo. 7/10

Ruby was stuck inside a cello, that's a bit worse then a dress.

@@garethmiguel Ruby herself is making such a big effort to even talk, you can hear it in her voice. The doctor too, is too big for the drum he is trapped in, but still has physical interactions with it. If this ticks you, then the whole franchise should tick you. They even take care on moisturizing her because of all the functions her body lacks, why would they bother with that but not on how her reduced body shouldn't be able to talk? Or how a womb is more powerful than a body that can recreate anything? Or how such being as a time lord, who can recreate a whole, perfect and healthy body, can be color blind? Are you telling me they can live for millennia, have perfect bodies that just look old while having an athlete's strength and energy, but for some reason they can have errors like color blindness? If the show is doing everything to communicate you something such as a character struggling to speak because of the pressure over their body, the. It's not the show's fault you don't get it. I also love the small details, like when maestro paradoxes the tardis the masters notes play from series 3

Why would a god called Maestro want to get rid of all of the music? Really strange motivation there. Kind of took me out of it.
@zactyl83876 ай бұрын
Because when someone makes music, it's takin a piece of them. Maestro wants all of music for themselves, any untouched note feeds in their power and makes them full. The pure sound of nature is the only music they will tolerate so no one else can steal it.

@@zactyl8387 it’s like saying Helios is the god of the sun so he gets rid of the sun?? It doesn’t make any sense. God-like characters in Doctor who are cool as hell but Maestro was loud, annoying and inconsistent lol
@zactyl83876 ай бұрын
@@charlielloyd4099 Maestro had one goal and it was made clear in the episode. Would be like Mictlantecuhtli (Nahua god of one of the twelve after death destinies) not wanting mortals to exist, because he likes to have his jade bones. In the mexica (Aztec) mythology, he did just that, because he wanted bones all for himself. He didn't care if there would be no longer death, he just wanted to keep his collection of bones. Even put traps to end Quetzalcóatl's life and prevent him from escaping. Gods don't need to be good or want their natural phenomenon to keep happening. Maybe Helios could get tired because of humanity using him as a giant battery and he wants to burn in, so he can have it all back and stop the thieves.

I had some problems with this ep some you mentioned but I can’t lie I just had fun with this ep. DW has been so bad in last era this is a welcomed comeback
@HellfireComms6 ай бұрын
This is the main difference between Chibnall's era and this one. There was simply no energy at all due to how episodes were shot and written, whereas here even if the script is lacking the direction amps things up and Gatwa's natural energy helps carry it.

Much preferred this to Space Babies, but the NEXT episode is the best one of the season so far. Jinx Monsoon was great as Maestro.

I'm not sure if you really got the joke at the beginning with The Doctor and Ruby walking into random music performances. At the beginning, they use their wits a bit, telling a worker that she can have 10 minutes off, and then making a joke about how anyone who works. Will be happy to quit for a few minutes if someone says that they'll fill in. As they keep checking different music performances though to see if music really has gone from the world, their efforts to remain unnoticed dissipate, until they simply waltz right into the room and say "Don't mind us!" I think the joke would have hit better if the Beetles song was actually like... You know, Bad lol
@voiceovershill76206 ай бұрын
I would have preferred a heartfelt goodbye to The Beatles and Cilla Black where the Doctor and Ruby tell them that their music will be remembered for generations to come or something along those lines. The dance number really didn’t do it for me.

Something like Van Goghs ending...?
@voiceovershill76206 ай бұрын
@@Labyethan kind of, but without a trip to the present day. Just the Doctor saying something inspirational and they get back into the studio and start playing or coming up with one of their iconic songs. When Maestro took music from the world, John and Paul seemed really depressed and it would have been powerful seeing their passion for music reignited.

@NotanothercrayonАй бұрын
In Wild Blue Yonder there was that thing with spilling salt at the edge of reality potentially letting things like reality-warpers in, so I guess it's at least consistent with new lore that we'd be seeing more of that stuff since that episode

My dad and I were tentative about this new season, as he grew up with old Who and I grew up with new, and we are both feeling turned off by these episodes. We haven't had a chance to watch Boom yet so that may change our opinions, but who knows at this point? We both said how it has become so "in-your-face" with all the gender and pronoun stuff (which don't get me wrong, I find it good that it's changing) but the fact that it has to constantly be pointed out just makes it seem like a token rather than something good, like the only character trait for certain characters is the fact that their pronouns are different to what is visually perceived? Like it's taking away from the story by constantly pointing it out, the story should just move on without having to constantly refer back to someone's sexuality, etc.

Or like when The Doctor kept correcting himself whenever he referred to the Space Babies as merely babies, as if they'd be offended for some reason. What nonsense was that? At no point did they introduce themselves as space babies, so why would they care if he failed to call them that? whaa?

6:21 I remember when watching this episode I thought Ruby's performance would have made for a much better scene if it was Debussy's Reverie - hauntingly beautiful and as the piece builds to a climax there are tritones which would have led very well into Maestro's appearance!
