@@steveandjeanniefrith236 I agree- I think a little nostalgia goes a long way. And while I know that everyone likes to act all tough and say that media shouldn't be thinking about the past and always looking forward, I personally think that that's all a load of balloney. I think one of Series 11's greatest problems was that it very rarely acknowledged the fact that the show existed before 2018. Other than Jodie Whittaker wearing Peter Capaldi's clothes for the first episode, and the fact that she called herself: "The Doctor," there is literally not a single reason for us to even believe that what we were watching was Doctor Who in the first episode. And sure- The Eleventh Hour was the same, but at least that had the TARDIS, as well as those flashbacks to the previous monsters and Doctors and... You know, it was well-written. Seasons 7 and 13 also had no returning monsters or anything like that, but at least they had the Brigadier, Sergeant Benton, the Fourth Doctor, and Sarah Jane to convince us that we were still watching the same show as before.

Those scenes with Tegan and Ace interacting with their Doctors actually do serve a bit of a larger purpose: closure. Both companions are notable for having a complicated relationship with their respective Doctors and didn't leave them on the best of terms. Tegan didn't initially want to travel with the Doctor and spent much of the time with him complaining about wanting to go back home. Then, when he did get her home, she realized that she made a mistake leaving him which ultimately lead to her rejoining him when she encountered him in Amsterdam a year later, only to eventually abruptly leave him after getting tired of all the death and destruction. Meanwhile Ace spent years traveling with the Doctor, constantly coping with his lies and manipulation throughout their travels which ultimately ends with her getting fed up and leaving him (the circumstances of which vary depending on which EU continuity for Seven and Ace you follow). Now I will grant you that at the end of the day this just further proves how ill-suited Jodie Whitaker is for this role that she was unable to have these moments on her own like 10 and 11 did with Sarah Jane and Jo Grant respectively, but as someone who loves both of these companions, I was glad to see both of them get closure with their respective Doctors.

The parts with 5/Tegan and 7/Ace are absolutely the high parts of the episode and one of the only times I felt genuine emotion throughout the Chibnal era. It felt sincere, it felt EARNED and was actually well written. The rest of the episode? Not so much. The plot is so nothing I felt myself watching the clock a lot of the time. I'll let the review say the rest, but I did enjoy the regeneration. It was simple and suited Jodie's optimistic Doctor. I didn't feel much emotion around it given the rest of the era's sloppiness, but in terms of cinematography, music etc. it was a decent regeneration. Roll on RTD-2 Era. EDIT: Oh right, the dream-crossroads thing with the other Doctors. I agree, decent concept and I liked the execution.

I don’t understand why the master needs to steal the doctors body?? Like what’s stopping him from killing her and then just calling himself the doctor? It’s such a stupid plan
@GeriatricFan19632 жыл бұрын
There seems to be a running theme with Sacha Dhawan's Master throughout the Chibnall era where he is incredibly self-loathing; there's always been an element of the Master being very heavily influenced by the Doctor (I.E. Derek Jacobi's pre-regeneration line: "If the Doctor can be young and strong, then so can I...") but this incarnation takes it to an even bigger extreme. In this episode he makes his Tardis into a parody of the Doctor's, he refers to the Daleks and Cybermen as his own "Fam" equivalent to the Doctor, he overwrites the Doctor's body, and then creates a frankenstein outfit of past Doctors clothes to wear. Before he gets turned back, he says: "I erased you Doctor...Don't let me go back to being me." He is envious of the Doctor and hates himself to the point that he would rather be his own twisted version of the Doctor. To me there is a motive there, and it's the one thing that we aren't bashed over the head with by endless exposition. I get the impression he's become nihilistic and discontent with his lot in life; he wants what the Doctor has, and in typical master fashion, rather than changing his villainous behaviour, (I.E. Missy) he sees the solution as simply stealing the Doctor's body. There's also the whole Timeless Child thing, where the Master hates that his existence, and that of the entire Timelord race is predicated on the Doctor being a key part of their origin story; the Doctor is the special one and he is nothing without them. So again, it makes sense to take all of that away from the Doctor, so that he can (even if only technically) become the timeless child, and also tarnish the Doctor's legacy and turn all of her friends against her. However, the way he does it is pretty nonsensical, where the Master-Doctor pilots the Tardis to the Mushroom Kingdom which happens to have a front row seat to an interplanetary war, and then he says to a random space camera that he's the Doctor now and claims responsibility. How that's gonna fool anyone who knows anything about the Doctor I don't know... Cool idea, and I actually really like the way Dhawan plays it since it makes him seem really pathetic and childish, but like with everything in the Chibnall era it doesn't get enough focus here to really breathe.
@firegirl262 жыл бұрын
@@GeriatricFan1963 I hate that story point . The Doctor has given many hints on how smart and brilliant the Master is . I know the Master can't be th Doctor but three can be a middle ground .
@GeriatricFan19632 жыл бұрын
@@firegirl26 I don't really care for the Timeless Child stuff either, because it's so inconsequential to the Doctor's character, but as a motivating factor for the Master to resent and become jealous of the Doctor I feel it works for me and at least feels consistent every time the Master pops up in the Chibnall era. I think a key part of the Master has always been this kind of nature vs nurture debate. The classic series presents the Master as just being twisted and evil by his very nature. With the RTD era we had the Master actually being a victim of the Timelords, driven insane by the neverending drum beat they put in his head. Then the Moffat era gives us Missy, an incarnation who is still chaotic and murderous, but actually wants to be friends with the Doctor again, and fights against her own nature to try and get better, and in the end her past literally won't let her. So the natural evolution from Missy, the closest we have ever had to a redeemed Master, is Dhawan's version, who doesn't have the same impulse control that Missy had. And because he failed as Missy, he ultimately decides: Why bother trying to change? He is miserable and alone, and the only solace he has is inflicting that same pain upon others. Also interesting is the Master-Doctor's reaction when his plan seems to have worked: He's in disbelief. When he angrily and petulantly shouts at Yaz "I am the Doctor!" there's a moment where he looks down almost sadly as it starts to sink in that the Doctor is truly gone. Even when he erases and replaces the Doctor, he cannot stop thinking about them. He's a Master that doesn't want to be the Master anymore, but doesn't see any other way out; no matter how hard he tries to change he will always fail and be back at square one, because he isn't the Doctor. So much of the Dhawan master's mockery of the Doctor comes across as him projecting the things he deep down hates about himself, about what he can't be.
@caberknight90132 жыл бұрын
@@GeriatricFan1963 Thats a great point and I agree with that assertion. However I don't think the episode (or frankly any of the previous episodes) illustrate that super well. 7:40 The Master refered to himself by his name once and it wasn't even in the right context when Yaz was present. Glad I'm not the only one who thought Yaz having first Aid training was weird, even weirder is that before this episode, we never see her use a gun
@Unethical.FandubsGames2 жыл бұрын
Well First Aid training is really not uncommon for emergency workers and the police. As for firearms training... Well there are gun clubs and the police do get some training with firearms... We never really established that she'd been in any such program so... Yeah. First aid. Fine. Gunshooty? I kinda would have liked something that established some form of competency first.

22:28 Honestly, it just made me think of My Hero Acadamia and how being the Doctor has become the same as having OFA, 1st even referred to the past Doctors we see in this episode as 'Vestiges' which is what the previous holders remnants are also called.
@Unethical.FandubsGames2 жыл бұрын
Let's be fair to Chibnall for a moment and just point out that that is a trope that has existed in stories well before Anime existed and how the hero's journey often involves some passing of the torch or passing down of power etc. So yeah. It's similar to OFA but only because it's copying the same trope.

@@Unethical.FandubsGames true. I wasn't complaining that Chibnall had copied it, just that it was what came to mind while watching it

People ask me, "Do you really think you could do better?" And yes, I do. A dog could do better operating a keyboard with its nose. One writing class would cover so many of the things Chibnall gets wrong; Chekhov's Gun, combining small character roles, cleaning up exposition, strong characterisation. WHY does this man have a job? Broadchurch had better be the Godfather given how poor his work on Doctor Who is, otherwise I can't believe he was hired anywhere without even a child's understanding of story structure. I'm really glad some people liked this era, it means it wasn't a total waste of time and resources. I don't blame the actors, the set designers, any of the people who worked on this. It's the writing and general oversight that is comically bad to an embarrassing degree.

RTD had Chibnall writing episodes for Dr Who as did Moffat. He ran Torchwood series 2 for RTD because he was asked and the BBC asked him to show run the whole thing. Stick something on youtube that you have done so we can laugh at your expense.

Honestly, I’ve tried repeatedly to start fresh with this episode; every time I think “okay, this time I’m giving it my full attention”, and every time my mind wanders off, I can’t keep track of where the characters are or why, and afterwards I genuinely struggle to remember what happened. It’s just hopeless.

As ace is the best classic era companion and has the best doctor companion dynamic, plus how good the 7th doctor era is once ace joins, you should really watch those stories. As for this episode, it did ace well and the conversation between her and 7 is probably my favourite scene in the episode.
@carealoo7442 жыл бұрын
Dude, just don't comment on the classic companions if you don't know what they're doing Ace doesn't like baseball- she just used a baseball bat to beat up a Dalek in one of her stories. It's arguably the most iconic moment for her.

Not just any baseball bat though. It was enhanced by the Doctor to make it able to destroy Daleks.

Staggering how low expectations have fallen for this show when you see the sheer number of people calling this a great episode. It was staggeringly average, unintentionally hilarious, and rescued only by Chibnall’s favourite plot device because he genuinely has no ideas of his own - nostalgia

16:09 There are actually 2 seperate audio stories where the Master and the Doctor switched bodies. They did it way better than Chibnall IMO, because the Master looks like the Doctor in those, while here, it's just the Master in her clothes.

13:57 You're nitpicking again. It was shown in the Series 1 finale that the TARDIS is surrounded by a forcefield that makes it nearly impervious to damage, even if the occupants are standing outside it. Presumably that is how they can withstand the heat of a volcano. Amy is even able to drift in the freezing vacuum of space in Series 5 outside the TARDIS, wearing just her nightgown, so clearly that shield extends quite a bit and adapts to protect its passengers. There's plenty of legitimate problems with Chibnall's era, so there is no need to make up ones that don't exist.

Yes! It's hilariously bad and messy. So many things that don't make sense and things kinda just happen for lazy reasons. Also the Master wanting to become the Doctor was hilariously dumb. Also Chibs never explained anything that he added to the lore completely. Overall this episode was a waste of time for me along with his whole era felt. Pointless trash that I am glad is finally over. What was the point of even adding the timeless crapper to the lore if he was never going to flesh it out lol. I am just happy RTD has returned

"I'm the doctor now" I mean you're wearing her clothes... why not have an episode where he actually pretends to be the Doctor, and defames her name by destroying planets or something? But I'll say this; at least the Master was confident enough to crossdress. Very ashamed of Tennant for magically regenerating the outfit off xD

I've only seen 4 episodes of Chibbles and Widdles run of Doctor Who. I knew from the start this was going to be bad based on the 4 episodes he wrote for the previous series. This final episode for both of them was the last straw with me ever going forward with the show again. Happily sticking to the classics.

23:58 Harry, much as I appreciate and admire your reviews you could not have got this more wrong. The recorder is without doubt awful but falls short by several light years of the truly most horrifying musical instrument ever - the bagpipes. The only justification for their use I have ever come across is the intro to Steve Earle's masterpiece Copperhead Road and that is mercifully short. Prolonged exposure to these instruments of torture would leave any sane person craving a dagger to gouge out their own eardrums. And so the recorder must be forever overshadowed by the mighty and terrible bagpipes. Also, the whole episode was worth the watch if only for Boney M moment and the look of incredulity between the Dalek and the Cyberman, an emotion made all the more impressive because of their impassive features. Please keep up the excellents work.

I'll always argue that the worst offender of this era wasn't S11 or 12 - best described as: kinda dull/ absurd even for sci-fi (even for *DW*)/ annoyingly preachy at points which is almost impressive, cause the new era has tackled a lot of issues but with some level of skill and subtlety. Whereas the levels here were someone yelling "Chris! For goodness sake, Put. The Sledgehammer. DOWN." - but is actually 13/Flux. Because it was *good*. Not great, not even close, but my god! After 2 seasons of, Well.., Flux was like finding a Dr. Pepper fountain of youth, in the middle of a desert, during a heatwave! And then they didn't even stick the landing, but instead plowed into the dirt face-first.

I agree with alot of your criticism but as a trained first aider working as a first responder, it's not that our ability expires. I dont forget how to give cpr, it's for insurance. if I'm trained and mess up it's my fault, if they don't train me and I mess up it's there fault. Thats why first aid expires. The point is 200 years in the future I'd still be able to make a splint for a broken leg with my shirt and anything long hard and straight like a metal pole. So yaz would be more than capable of giving emergency first aid
