The explosion occurs because flammable gas has filled the room. The Doctor exposes some of the wiring connecting to the light switch. Flipping the switch causes a small spark through the wire, enough to set the gas on fire. Hence, an explosion.
@ryanratchford25303 жыл бұрын
This is one of the reasons they say don’t leave the gas Hob on. Entering the room and turning on the lights if the Hob has been on while you where out can cause an explosion
@DalekCaanOfSkaro3 жыл бұрын
We even see the Doctor expose the wiring causing an arc between the 2 wires resulting in a spark
@jackmcgough11643 жыл бұрын
It would take hours to fill a room enough to explode tho
@DalekCaanOfSkaro3 жыл бұрын
@@jackmcgough1164 it actually doesn't take that long. Gas is a very dangerous thing, and a small spark can be quite dangerous, and it doesn't take much for gas to become dangerous. Remember he opened several gas taps, and that won't take long at all to become a hazard as it fairly quickly fills up the room. As Ryan said, you can leave your stove on for a short while and the slightest trip of a spark can cause it to ignite really fast.

Way back in school someone had left all the Bunsen burners on I over the weekend in the science lab. When the teacher came in the following Monday he flicked the light switch, and boom, room went boom. Teacher was injured. School was closed and he was taken to hospital. So it is possible, I'm sure it was explained to me how but I've forgotten.
@rkah61873 жыл бұрын
That's why they add mercaptan to gas... natural gas doesn't smell, so you would not notice a gas leak. If you smell gas, don't turn the light on or use any sort of flame, kindly vacate the building and call the fire brigade.
@Kranitoko4 жыл бұрын
Wait, Harry have you never been told never to turn a switch on in a room full of gas? Because this is what happens? When you flip a switch there's often a small spark. If there is a flammable gas filling the air, boom.

Mark Gatiss seems to have the worst luck with NuWho, he seems like a writer far more suited to Classic Who story telling than NuWho. That being said his later efforts of Sleep No More, Cold War and Empress of Mars are brilliant.

Mark Gatiss is too fond of vintage, campy horror. It’s brilliantly parodied in The League of Gentlemen, but every time he sneaks it into Doctor Who, the dramatic tension becomes dead on arrival.
@Theterrifiedgamer3 жыл бұрын
I've been trying to put my finger on why Mark's writing is successful in League but unsuccessful almost everywhere else, and I think you're right. He can do parody very well, but when it comes to writing serious drama he always fucks it up.

The gas and light switch would probably work, though you have to assume the room was almost totally full of gas and perhaps the Doctor stalled for that to happen? (haven't seen the episode in a while) As for the light switch, it's hard to say really, any switch creates a tiny spark which can ignite a gas leak, though the spark would be in the switch itself, unless that switch was for something else, as laboratories often have switches to control electricity to other devices in the event that you need to shut something off but not get close.

6:10 I'm not a scientist either (though im trying to get my degree), but I assume the electrical spark of a light switch could ignite volatile gasses, but I doubt the Doctor stood around for 5 mins to let the room fill up with the flammable gas lol
@CameronKinvig3 жыл бұрын
The room explodes because the air in the room becomes saturated by methane gas (highly flammable) and the spark from the light switch ignites it. It's a bit silly since you'd need *a lot* of methane gas to do that kind of explosion which would take ages coming from those pipes, and light switches don't always spark when flicked on.

The light and gas explosion is possible Whenever you turn on a light switch or plug something into an outlet there is potential for a small electrical arc, which can ignite flammable gas if it's present.
@TheHufflepuffSaint3 жыл бұрын
The reason the lab explodes is because The Doctor exposes and twists some wires together in one of the lightbulbs after he turns the gas on. It's a fairly obvious scene as he gets up on one of the lab tables and everything. I'm sorry but how did you miss that, I mean no offense but it's a 10-15 second scene where he messes with the lightbulb. And then when he escapes the lab, flicking the switch as he does, the exposed wires let off a spark which ignites the gas.

@TheWhovinerd-1963 Жыл бұрын
See I’m 50/50 on this episode. While it definitely has its weaknesses such as the terrible CGI, it has its strengths. I feel people often overlook this episode because, of the terrible special effects. For me personally what redeems this story is it’s symbolism and what it represents. It is symbolic of humanity’s arrogance in the world of science, in the way we think we can dabble with the laws of nature, regardless of the consequences. And it is also symbolic of Mortality. This episode strives to convey that a longer life doesn’t always guarantee that you will have lived a better one. As the Doctor says “some people live more in 20 years than others do in 80. It’s not the time that matters, it’s the person”. He’s basically telling Lazarus that he wasted his life and he can’t take it back no matter how hard he tries. Overall I’d give this episode a 7/10. It’s not mind blowing but it’s a bit enlightening to the differing interpretations of what defines us as a species. Maybe im just being too kind to this episode idk, I tend to see the hood in things people despise. This is my own opinion, ofc you may disagree and that is perfectly fine. To each their own as they say. Xx

Sure it has some flaws and the cgi is outdated, but I appreciate the ambition (even if I do find it a bit unbelievable as a throwback, but then again, we do share 50% of our DNA with a banana, so why not?). It was close to being much better than it was. Tweak things here and there and you have a really good story. But Mark Gatiss is somewhat like Chris Chibnall when it comes to writing stories - meaning that you're probably not going to get a GREAT episode from either one of them any time soon. Although, I did LOVE The Unquiet Dead in Season 1. Still, overall the season was quite entertaining and often great, so I overlook the few swings and misses. P.S. I do watch this one, and the two-part Dalek story and Chinball's "42". None of these are great, but I get some joy and amusement out of them. Give me The Doctor and Martha in this season and I'm okay, especially when Captain Jack shows up late in the game.
