Infertile soil, carbon-rich air, lacking fossil fuels, recession recession recession. Boomers will be the last generation to have the luxury of an old age. I can't speak for everyone, but I'm shooting myself before the population topples over 10 billion. That's 2050. I'll be 48. Ten billion people on a planet with resources that can sustain only one. It's happening in our lifetime. Keeps me awake at night.

At its weakest moments, The Waters of Mars is the best 'Base Under Siege' story to date. At its strongest moments, it's the greatest deconstruction of Ten - _hell, just the Doctor generally!_ I could have had the whole of Series 5 follow the Time Lord Victorious, and I wouldn't complain.

I feel that this is one of the most perfectly crafted episodes in the show's run, never have we seen the Doctor's sympathy and constant urge to help others be portrayed in such a selfish manner. It really highlighted how the Doctor is just one bad day away from being the Master, he even repeats some of the same stuff the Master said in series 3 (The Master says "tough" in Utopia when the Doctor begs him to stop, the Doctor says "tough" when Adaleid says he shouldn't have as much power as he has - both pleas coming from people who recognise that the person they're speaking to is in control of power they aren't fit to handle). Tennant's acting is just perfect, he's simply broken to have found himself involved in yet another disaster that he's known about for years, and even more broken to realise that he can't prevent it. Of course, when he decides to try and prevent it and convinces himself he's gonna beat "time itself", he's given a reality check when Brooke killed herself and he realises that he is in fact NOT the Time Lord Victorious, he's not the winner. The man who committed mass genocide against his own people in order to save time itself was taught a valuable lesson: Time does not reward one with power over it in exchange for saving it, Time just goes on no matter what he may try.

@Lady Wanderer It's really not a lightning strike change in characterisation, because we've never seen the 10th Doctor be alone or have that realisation of power and especially having the hope of "just saving someone" in the fire of Pompeii rings a bell by Donna, and always losing someone in his journey highlighted in Journey's end shows how powerless he feels at times even though he essentially has the powers of a God right at his footsteps, so him being companion-less and showing what he really wants makes sense not to mention the thought of being the last time lord and the prophesy in the last episode further solidifies his action. I think your second point doesn't make sense, is her dying still not a tragedy for her child? Not to mention the many mystery's surrounding her death and her being in the first group to going into Mars, is that not still inspiration? Why does the location change her dreams of following Adaleid? Also disagree by 2050 I think we'd have technology to prove with absolutely certainty that they went to Mars I mean a explosion doesn't happen out of nowhere not to mention the missing crew members and the robot as proof, it's not too hard to believe. The message I think is more so of playing God the integral person who wasn't supposed to survive dies anyways really a contradiction of what he was thinking at that time, it shouldn't be something he plays around with especially in a fixed point. The saved people don't play as an important factor it's more focused on characteristics of the Doctor and finding his faults of playing God (mainly in a fixed point of such an integral part of history) and being able to pick who lives and survives a reference to S3 Christmas special when the professor calls the idea of being able to decide who lives and who dies a monster in a way (or even attempting to), also the Doctor cracked once it doesn't mean the whole flood gate should be poured out because in an instant of his decision to save the crew, the realisation comes when there's a reflection to the Master when he says "Tough" something he said in Utopia or in the classic series where the master says "they will obey me" so you can see what the story is hinting at and it's something he shouldn't become. "This why Doctor Who is in the state it is in today , because people like you praised thoughtless garbage like this." How in the world is it thoughtless, you missed so many parts of the story yourself linking to other parts, if anything you're the one lacking actual good reasons or criticisms on why Doctor Who is in the state it's in, nonsensical conclusion in my opinion which stems from essentially nothing.

@Lady Wanderer Again I don't see how that'll change her Son's influence I know they're not the same but how would that change her not believing in her and finding hope in her endeavours and using it as inspiration in what she was doing, seeing it as meaningless and having the perception of being a cover up is really redundant especially when you have the survivors to tell their story and isn't unbelievable especially when you have Earth moving across the universe and knowing aliens have that technology. The Doctor prefaces that her dream starts because in a way she's doing it to meet her, both still are surrounded in mystery, why did she kill herself sparking potential cover up theories or why did she self detonate the place in Mars which in turn still killed herself and the crew sparking up theories on how's a potential murderer? Also being a cover up or being a liar seems too poignant especially when there other avenues to believe Adaleid and the fact the survivors stories don't sound too unbelievable especially when people have seen such technology. We all know the differences, but we are talking about changes of those differences, you're baffled because you're looking at the wrong thing. He saved people in the fires of Pompeii but not the event, the story is talking about the very fixed point in time which is her death, so saving a few people wouldn't matter as the Doctor essentially says to Adaleid's face that she's more important showing his thoughts that he has the power so no, it's far more irrelevant, the Doctor's saved people all the time but this is different involving fixed points and how pivotal they are, time didn't bend to his will because the fixed point still happened anyways, those few people aren't more grander than the other being Adaleid.

I have long felt many of the people that love him, seem to miss ALL of this deeper, darker characterisation entirely and purely focus on... well, let's be honest, Tennant himself; how charming and funny and dashing he can be. But for Ten it's frankly a very surface level facade. Timelord Victorious, in Turn Left when the MERE FACT that Donna was not there to say "Hey, this is wrong" causes the Doctor to go so ruthless and hard genociding the Racnoss that he blows everything up AND kills himself in the process. How do people miss that detail from Turn Left? It's extreme! People say "Ten is the most human Doctor" and in some ways I agree, but he's also very very cold, often emotionally manipulative (pay attention to Martha and Jack in the series 3 finale episodes), very hypocritical and frequently ruthless. These are all traits present in humans, but not *kind* ones, and when people claim his 'humanity' they tend to do so positively. He is *very* human imo, but nowhere near being the most emotionally available, or genuine; in fact, he's actually a massive d\*ck (particularly to Martha). Donna was much needed, she really brought him down a peg (watching him and Rose was like watching your rich bullies from the fifth form go on elaborate space dates, and watching him walk all over the brilliant Martha was painful). He needs others to restrain him so he doesn't just immediately commit *genocide* because it's so clearly instinctual for him (Turn Left, Journey's End), and so he doesn't just declare himself a god and start manipulating the entire universe to his skewed sense of 'right' (Waters Of Mars, End Of Time).

Honestly,The Waters of Mars deserves a 10/10. It is such a perfect episode; the way it turns water into a genuine threat is absolutely terrifying, and the Time Lord Victorious stuff is David Tennant at his absolute best.

The moment Adelaide kills herself, and the Doctor realises just what he's done, who he's become, I don't think I've ever felt fear like that watching anything before. To see the Doctor responsible for the death of an innocent person, to see this man I've watched save planets and species for the last few years become this...tyrant of time, only for it all to come crashing down, knowing that newly created corpse lying in the house feet away from him is HIS fault as waves of horror and guilt and shock flood through him...dude, give me all the Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels, Vashta Nerada in the world. They'll barely come close to the extreme emotions of seeing the Doctor rising up and falling down like that. Truly incredible acting from Tennant and Duncan, with yet more RTD and Murray Gold perfection this episode.

Me too. I remember the day exactly. We had gotten mcdonalds takeaway and I was so excited because Doctor Who hadn't been on tv in months. I was like 12 or so, but was young/immature for my age. Then once the zombies appeared I felt genuinely sick. I couldnt bring myself to eat a burger for like 2 years after that, no joke. I'm watching this video mow because I hardly remember the episode as I got scared. Surprised so many people are saying it was the best special. Feel i've missed out now

But if we put global warming beside, issues like industrial pollution of the environment and overpopulation (which I think the episode was referring too) are certainly legitimate issues that the vast majority of people can agree on. Overall though, thankfully the entire environment narrative was not forcefully nor preachy and remained relatively in the background of the story. The same can't be said with regards to the woke shit we get nowadays, which sadly includes the latest Doctor Who. I myself consider myself a nationalist and I completely agree that immigration levels into the UK have been way too high. Even more disturbing is that if the current trends continue, White Britons (i.e the native population of the UK) may become a minority in their own country in 2066. This is something that should be prevented.

All the companions from when I started watching (Eccleston to Tennent) were all strong female characters. Rose, Martha, Donna. All of them brought something new and wasn't just a generic badass.

@@BritishTeaFGC Agreed. Rose was quick thinking and a strong leader (Shown in the impossible planet/satan pit episodes). Martha was a little soggy at first but was exceptional in the family of blood story, and had a lot of great qualities. Donna was strong willed, independent, and provided the doctor's moral compass. I think that in trying to be 'woke,' western media has become less woke because of it. Martha was a great companion because she was a good character, not because she was black. Adelaide was a fantastic side character because she was a good character, not because she was a woman in a position of power. I hope that moving forward BBC takes a look back and realizes what made their characters good, else the show won't learn from it's recent mistakes and steadily decline in quality.

The Waters of Mars was my first episode of Doctor Who that I watched, so it holds a very special place in my heart. Looking back at it over 10 years later, made me realise just how dark this episode can really be, with most of the mature themes such as Adelaide's suicide and Ten's Time Lord Victorious persona flying right over my younger self's head. The Flood while they absolutely terrified me, yet made me intrigued on wanting more of this show. I just love hearing other people's opinions about this episode, wherever it be good or bad. Every time I rewatch this episode I always find something new that makes me appreciate so much more EDIT: 8:28 I struggle to express my thoughts into words when trying to describe this scene to other people, but looks like you just took the words right out of my mouth. Such a beautiful analysis on arguably one of the most powerful scenes in DW.

My favourite Tennant moments are when he really shows how alien he is. I love the condescending lines he gives at the end like *“I’ve done this sort of thing before; saved some little people”* or when he simply responds *“Tough”* or when he opens a door and even chooses to gloat about that saying *“That’s easy”.* It just shows how truly out of touch he is with humanity deep down and demonstrates the god-complex he tries to suppress

Interesting how much myth plays into this episode of Doctor Who. You mentioned the Fall from Eden, and there’s also a heavy Greek resonance around “The Hubris Before the Fall”. That Ten becomes the Time Lord Victorious, the hubris; only for it to burst with Adelaide’s suicide. Also interesting that Ten fights nature itself to save what is supposed to be an inevitable death for Adelaide, only for her to die through her own human agency.

I highly recommend you check out the classic 3rd Doctor story: 'Inferno.' It is 7 parts along, but I first decided to play it when I had to come home early as I was sick, and I couldn't believe how fast the time went by. If I may use a spoiler to get you hooked- The Doctor actually has to leave a burning world behind.

Makes you go along with him till at the end your snapped back into it realising how wrong this is. Only the death can snap him out of this, as it all comes crashing down back to reality.

For me the line that really made me question whether I even liked Tennant any more was when he referred to Yuri and Mia as the 'little people' and that comes from someone that, until this episode, was besotted with every element of his character. But this particular line was so cruel, so belittling and so vainglorious, it was poetic the way Adelaide shuts him down verbally and then mentally by killing herself, thus restoring him to a state of pureness and emotion again. It was refreshing to see how cruel The Doctor can be when they haven't got a companion by their side. And more refreshing to see them restored once again.

There was a sort of comic tie in to the scene where David tennant says "time lord victorious" (not the one from this year) but an alternate timeline where after this the doctor goes mad with power after losing so many people and decides to leave wilfred mott in the radiation booth to die and he then stays as david tennant in series 5 not meeting amy (if the timeline still includes series 5) and if not he becomes a power mad tyrant who even the daleks cannot defeat and it took 24 doctors from different universes to defeat the one evil doctor. A raxocoricofalaptorian kills him with an anti regeneration round with the help from the 24 doctors. Even the evil doctors tardis went evil too. If series 5 does play out the universe ends as he's locked in the pandorica with nobody to help him and the show ends. Oh, even as an evil doctor the daleks still win in Victory that plays out the same, he's furious though. He's essentially Amy-less in series 5 if it does play out and the doctor doesn't become a tyrant.

I like that they set 'The Stolen Earth' in 2009 and it establishes a time for the present day. However, what still puts me off is that, in Human Nature, the Doctor mentions that it was 2007 in the present day, meaning that Series 3 was set during 2007. Since they didn't mention the Web Star, I thought that maybe it hadn't happened yet. Then, in Turn Left, they set Smith and Jones after The Runaway Bride. So I thought that the episode Rose could be set in 2004 which then turned into 2005 but then there was The End of Time. Now I don't know what to think! Doctor Who continuity is a hellhole you don't want to find yourself in.

Its a Doctor Who zombie episode...whats not to like? and the use of water as the catalyst for the zombies is just great and in my opinion its one of the 10th Doctors best episodes because he doesn't know what to do he usually reasons with his enemies but these zombies lack any form of communication so that flies out the window and even at the end where the doctor thinks he has a small win it all comes crashing down for him as Adelaide returns home and commits suicide

While an amazing show... I just find myself wondering what sort of insane conspiracy theories that the actions in the episode would have resulted in... Leader of one of the most important space missions of all time found dead in her home from suicide after contact is lost with the base AND the base is destroyed with the only witnesses somehow having returned without a means of transportation and if they even say anything, talking about how this random guy showed up, helped a bit, went a bit nuts, then saved them from getting attacked by water-zombies and disappeared without a trace. No matter what they could possibly say or not say, true or untrue, absolutely everyone would be screaming "It's a coverup!"
